About the Author

Steve Lyons fell in love with outdoor adventure early. As a boy of six he began learning to hike, camp and canoe at camp Man-Go-Tah-See on Loon Lake. By age thirteen he'd built two canoes from kits (the first with dad's help and the next on his own) and was hard to drag away from his haunts on the lakes and in the marshes around his Michigan home. At age 16 he honed his outdoor skills at Outward Bound, exploring the Boundary Waters of Quetico Provincial Park and Superior National Forest. In the years that followed he built more boats and made numerous excursions to rivers in Michigan, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine, Ontario, the Yukon, California and Colorado. At age 21, Steve spent a summer hiking, camping and exploring Europe with his brother, Dave, and friend Tom Hall. At age 26, searching for the meaning of life, Lyons spent 18 months backpacking and bumming his way around the world. His adventures took him to many remote and beautiful places, some of which he's shared about in his writings. Steve's articles have appeared the American Whitewater Journal, Oakland Press, Mother Earth News, Boston Magazine and others. He wrote his first book, The Bicyclist's Guide to the Southern Berkshires in 1993. He lives with his wife, Phyllis, in a small Colorado town just north of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
