3.0 out of 5 stars Black Cat continues a very Ho-hum ride, June 30, 2007
This review is from: Black Cat, Volume 9 (Black Cat (Graphic Novels)) (v. 9) (Paperback)
This volume picks up on the premature ending of Vol. 8 with the siege of Creed's Apostles of the Stars by the mysterious and never clearly defined Chronos group. When Black Cat (Train) shows up early on to make the battle a three way slugfest...I got very excited until he makes an interesting decision which is rather novel but at the same time belies the very unexciting tone of this series. Every time you expect this series to get to a knock down drag out high stakes battle it takes a far calmer and surprisingly american superhero sensibility which is not at all what interests me with manga. The series in Japan is 20 volumes long which means here in US we are at halfway mark..and that no major plotline or plot twist has yet occurred is worrying me greatly. Try volumes 1-4 of Black Cat--if the great art and interesting backstory interest you like they did me then you may enjoy this volume but with so many other good jump manga out there..it's hard to recommend this to fans who are on a tighter budget and looking for the best series to read. Rurouni Kenshin has similar themes as Black Cat and is a million times better.
