Book Description

October 15, 2002

When The Diva, Bams, and Cass looked around for reviews that reflected their own experience and found hardly any, they decided to take matters into their own hands, to let Hollywood know that Blacks spend money on movies beyond Boyz 'N the Hood wannabees.

Whether they are reviewing the blockbusters, "Flicks That Made Bank," or the films with Black Oscar nominees, 3 Black Chicks Review Flicks is a peerless and hilarious source of film criticism and movie trivia. Before you rent your next video or buy a new DVD, check out what they have to say on:

Monster's Ball
Like it or not, Berry was beautiful without meaning to be, vulnerable without trickery, emotive without melodrama. And that Billy Bob fella wasn't half bad himself.

The Green Mile
"Magical Negro Alert!" At the onset, it appears as if this is yet another movie about a white savior of a Black man. I saw it as the exact opposite... They don't get much better than this.

All About Eve
Eve wasn't doing anything that a good ass kicking wouldn't fix -- it should have been called "All About a Beat Down."...It's the perfect movie to put on one Saturday afternoon.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Willy Wonka is 60 percent Ghettofabulous, 55 percent psychedelic, 20 percent Pythonesque...and 100 percent good.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

More Than "Two Thumbs Up" Countering that there are not enough nationally known black movie reviewers, The Diva, Bams and Cass formed their own critics' circle, 3 Black Chicks. They've gathered their reviews of "chick flicks," "late-night booty-call flicks," "movies that just plain suck" and other films in 3 Black Chicks Review Flicks: Movie Reviews With Flava! The women have unique criteria for judging a movie, among them "the Black Factor" (the presence or absence of black cast and crew members) and "the Brotha Rule" (which often applies to action films, where a black character sacrifices himself for the life of a Caucasian main character). Each entry takes up less than a page, culminating in a rating somewhere between red light (meaning "I don't think so!") and green light ("What are you waiting for?"). It's a unique and refreshing way of looking at films that should appeal to all moviegoers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A VERY UNIQUE LOOK AT SOME OF HOLLYWOODS BEST AND WORST., October 21, 2010
This review is from: 3 Black Chicks Review Flicks: A Film and Video Guide with Flava! (Paperback)
Well, I like movies. I always have. While I am one of those who absolutely despises almost everything on T.V. and have since the horrid invention became common, I will admit that "The Box" has made available many, many movies that I otherwise would never have had access to. Now along with my absolute hatred for television is my absolute distain for the average run of the mill movie critic. I have read thousands of reviews over the years and with the exception of some of the "amateur reviews" I read here on Amazon, I have met few that I would even insult a dead fish by wrapping it in the paper the review was written on.

Not so this wonderful work! I at last found three reviewers who share my tastes and somewhat quirky outlook on the world of movies.

These three ladies more or less tell it how it is with out a lot of double talk and pathetic attempts to impress their readers with a bunch of double talk and whimpering about artistic value, historical impact, blah, blah, blah. No, this trio simply tells you what they think of the movie; why they feel that way, and by doing so convince you pretty quickly that they absolutely know their subject matter and that they truly love movies. If the movie is great...they say so, it if is bad, they do likewise.

Many of their review are absolutely hilarious (I think sometimes they do this without meaning to be funny), and all are absolutely spot on. These writers give the reader a different slant; they make you aware of aspect of a movie that you may not have been aware of when you viewed it. This makes for an enriching experience.

Now you need not be a black chick to appreciate this work. Their view pretty well cuts across racial, ethic and gender lines, and does it in such a neat read able way.

If you enjoy movies and if you enjoy a good piece of writing, then this belongs on our shelf.

It should be noted that more than 250 movies and videos are reviewed here...not all of them all that reverently!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just for black chicks..., January 17, 2003
By
This review is from: 3 Black Chicks Review Flicks: A Film and Video Guide with Flava! (Paperback)
If you love movies, you'll love "3 Black Chicks Review Flicks." Besides being funny and presenting a great rating system, these women are intelligent and able to express themselves perfectly in talking about movies. Their reviews are honest and real and cross the boundries of sex and race, thus presenting valuable insight. This is 1 white chick who loves those 3 black chicks!

What a great book! Don't miss it -- it's hysterical and refreshingly irreverent, yet still intelligent enough to make good points about the movies being discussed. I liked seeing reviews of "Auntie Mame" and "All About Eve" mixed in with more current releases. We're looking forward to their next book. Be ready to laugh out loud, especially when reading about "Movies That Just Plain Suck."
