5.0 out of 5 stars great deal, great service

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for light sparring
These are great for light sparring, but if you start doing anything more serious than that, invest in some beefier shin pads.

earlier this year, i started krav maga and taekwondo and usually came home with my fair share of "mat leprosy"; you know, those various scratches, gouges, or unsightly strawberry colored blotches that scream "i pay $100 a month to get mugged for 10 hours a week!" needless to say, it was a blast.

but this fall i took a civilian contracting job in iraq, and the only sparring partner i have now is a 200lb heavy bag at the military provided gym, which wreaks murder on my instep when practicing my front snaps and rear round kicks. sick of stiff ankles, i looked around here online for a pair of pads that are both afforable and durable enough for the punishment a 230lb firefighter can deliver to his shins on an unsuspecting sack of sand. additionally, they work well to cushion ankle weights from rubbing my ankles raw when i shadow box.

i'm very satisfied with my purchase, and after receiving very heartfelt thanks from piranha's customer service for my purchase, i'll definately bring my business back to them when i buy more sparring gear in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for kumite, October 28, 2009

This review is from: Shock Wave Black Cloth Shin Instep Pads (Misc.)
The shockwave shin/instep pads are awesome. I bought them to replace my shiny foam lightning shin/instep pads which only had three velcro straps to hold them on. During kumite at the dojo, the lightning shin guards kept sliding off every time I'd land a shin kick, or block a thai kick with my shin (including proper mechanics of leg movement). This resulted in the lightning pads' ineffectiveness. I had to keep dropping down and adjusting them.

There are several other students using the Shockwave type (although different brand name) shin guards and I noticed that they were not experiencing the same problem I was having, stated in the above paragraph. So, I got online and found the Piranha gear shockwave shin/instep pads...They are AWESOME!! I no longer fear cracking shin bones during kumite. They have allowed me to focus on improving my kumite techniques and knowledge. I also bought black so that sweat stains would not appear as obvious.

My only qualm with the pads is that I'm not sure how to wash them. Normally the pads come out and the outer sock can be washed. But, I have yet to find an opening with which I may remove the pads. I would still recommend them to anyone needing sparring gear.

I have owned these pads for about 4 months now. They are over the calf style and stay in place very well. This makes them a little harder to get on and off but its not too taxing. These pads are also pretty hard. They are made of fairly hard foam and on a fast hit they don't give much and sound almost like plastic soccer shin guards but if you squeeze them with your finger aqnd thumb they are compressable on both sides.

Foot pad stays in place well but does rotate in the outer shell a bit. Overall for the price and performance they're hard to beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, June 26, 2008

If you want a good, cheap pair of pads this is it. Go for a name brand, get Fairtex, pay the 100 bucks. But of you want a pair that do the same thing, or that your lazy friends can use, I would definatly say to buy these. Cover the shin and foot perfectly, doesn't slide off and only turns after extreme use, just adjust it, and your set again in an instant.

In a nutshell: Quality sparring pads, great customer service.

These shin guards were the first product I had ordered from Piranha Gear. They arrived quickly and I immediately began putting them to use. They fit comfortably and after somewhat brutal tribulations are still working just fine. They work great for practice and sparring and would recommend them to anyone that needs quality pads for an affordable price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the $, but not for full-on sparring!, October 13, 2010

I have been using these shin pads for several months in Muay Thai kickboxing. I have enjoyed them very much and they are a steal at such a low price. They are a great fit, the strech-fabric holds them on very well. They are also increadibly light.

The downside is as you can expect with something so inexpensive. They are not heavy-duty, so the padding is a little thin. They work wonderfully for light sparring or simulated sparring. I would highly recommend them for those practices.

But avoid these if you are doing intense sparring or MMA sparring training. I received several very painful welts and bruises when doing "live" sparring from kicking hard and catching the odd elbow or knee when opponents blocks weren't perfect (or my aim was off).

For "live" sparring you are much better off with the Piranha Grappling shin pad (leather with neoprene sleeve). They cost a lot more but can will definitely protect a lot more from high-speed impacts. A friend of mine has been using them for several months in the same program and has never been hurt as I have with these pads in sparring situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pads/Low Price, July 22, 2008
Not only was this item shipped very fast, but these are great pads for not alot of cash.
I tried them on immediately after they arrived and the fit was perfect - I then headed over to my kickboxing gym to give them a thorough workout - and they performed beautifully. I am known to work my gear to a pulp so I am sure when it's time for my next set of pads, I will be coming right back to PIRAHNA GEAR. (I spent over an hour online last night looking at all of their other gear too - I'm making a wish list!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Company, Great Product, February 19, 2008

I purchased these because the ones I bought from the Tae Kwon Do academy were showing a lot of wear. I looked at a few different places, but I decided on these because of price. The first pair I got were too small, but Piranha Gear took care of this problem quickly. I sent them back and got a larger set very quickly. Because of the level of service I received along with the quality of the product I bought, I will check Piranha Gear first for any future martial arts purchases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Shin Pads!, October 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'd been using them for a while at my Muay Thai lessons and I must say that they are really confortable. The protection is not the best (the foam barrier is a bit thick but stronger than the one of the Tae Kwon Do shin pads I'd used...) but if you think about it it will help you to build a more resistant shin without being hurt.

As far as I being using them no problems had been presented, so I must admit that these shin pads are really durable. I'm really enjoying them.
