This review is from: The Black Cloud (Paperback)
The novel is written in 1958 and will appear old fashioned now. It is amusing to read how the author (an astronomer himself) glorifies technical advancement of his time such as an "electronic computer", able to make "one hundred thousand operation per minute" or compression of transmission signals ; many pages are devoted to pedagogical explanations of these items and I have to confess, they make the book very enjoyable. I think this is the first SF novel I read which contains differential equations in a footnote, in order to show the correctness of the argument of one the protagonist.
Overall, the book fades in comparison to "nightfall" by I.Assimov (1941). The main story line is similar, but the author is much less talented in grasping the reader's attention. I'll recommend it to SF vintage amateurs. |
