From the moment I read the first chapter of Herbert Kelley's Black Clover, I knew I was going to have a hard time putting it down. Being introduced to a young man at the time in his life when he has his first sexual experience, which eventually leads to a full blown addiction, was a sure way to draw me in. Hearing Damon Green describe his sexual escapades brought this urban fiction book of erotica to life.
While much of the book is focused on Damon's struggle to control his addiction, we're also introduced to a number of characters who help fuel his flam, namely Freda, the woman of his "dreams," and her cougar mother, Penny. Although Damon tries to resist the feminine wiles of this mother/daughter duo, they seem to possess a certain power over him that only they have control of. Ultimately, as with all of us, it is up to Damon to dig deep within himself to find the strength to keep his temptations at bay.
Kelley is superb at developing major characters and drawing the reader in through extreme detail in the use of urban terminology, legends, and experiences. This work of fiction reads like an autobiography and at times I found myself wondering if it might truly be about the authour himself (although he assures me it is complete fiction). My heart ached for Damon when he revealed his relationship with his mother and I have to wonder if that is not the driving factor behind his addiction. Kelley did a great job keeping me interested and longing for more. I'm expectantly awaiting the sequel!
