4.0 out of 5 stars "Moody Themes of Film Noir ... Black Dahlia (2006) ... Mark Isham"
Silva America Records presents "BLACK DAHLIA" (2006), as Mark Isham the seasoned film composer has given us a romantic suspenseful score mixed with blends of extremely strong dramatic melodies that will leave you wanting more ... trumpet solos are performed by composer Isham as he traces the corridors of film noirs ... Isham with his undeniable talent and rousing brass...

Isham with his undeniable talent and rousing brass comes to the forefront ... much like the film noir score of Jerry Goldsmith from "L.A. Confidential", Isham's themes, somber melancholy cues and heart pounding suspense tracks rule on this brilliant score ... Highly recommend this CD to "filmscore collectors" and "Mark Isham Fans" alike!

5.0 out of 5 stars Isham's finest, February 12, 2008
This review is from: The Black Dahlia (Original Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
With the exception of The Net, I have never liked the music of Mark Isham. But being well aware of director Brian De Palma's unique talent for getting great scores out of his composers, I was curious about the result of their collaboration.

The result is a fantastic and beautiful score. The movie is as close to a true film noir as you're gonna get these days, and the same goes for the score. It opens with the The Zoot Suit Riots which starts with a very slow, moody trumpet solo which represents the voice of Josh Hartnett's charachter. The trumpet solo soon evolves into a rythmic, fully orchestrated action cue. Death At The Olympic puts Mark Isham in the same league as Pino Donaggio, Ennio Morricone and Ruychi Sakamoto - composers who have crafted masterful music for De Palma's stunning slow-motion, non-verbal action/suspense scenes. The Dahlia brilliantly conveys both the mystique and the quiet sadness of Elisabeth Short.

The score was criminally overlooked by the acadamy when oscartime came around which is unforgivable since this was easily one of the greatest scores of 2006. And I NEVER thought I'd say that about a Mark Isham score

5.0 out of 5 stars The Black Dahlia.....Did I spell that right, October 4, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Black Dahlia (Original Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
Now I like a good Mark Isham. Sometime hes good like with Rules of Engagment to Eight Below and sometimes I dont like him like with Crash. But thats my opinion. This soundtrack falls as an oscar worthy score. Mark has outdone himself from beginning to end with this piece of work. The best track is the opener The Zoot Suit Riots. But I have to say this has got some stiff compitition. All The Kings Men and this could be the Oscar contenders but there could be stiffer compitition if Flyboys score is good

4.0 out of 5 stars better than the movie itself, September 24, 2006
This review is from: The Black Dahlia (Original Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
A very enjoyable score quite reminiscent of music from old film noirs. Listening to this, I can pretend "The Black Dahlia" was a much better movie than it was.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lackluster film, lackluster music, December 19, 2006
This review is from: The Black Dahlia (Original Soundtrack) (Audio CD)
"The Black Dahlia" was a massive cinematic disappointment for me. The film was about anything but Elizabeth "the black dahlia" Short. I was also disappointed in Mark Isham's film score as well and I have enjoyed Mark's work in the past from "The Cooler" to "Crash". I didn't particularly care for "The Zoot Suit Riots" track because it was loud and bombastic but I guess it was created that way to coincide with the opening scenes when the riots were going on. I definitely liked it when Mark took it down a few notches on "The Two of Us" and for most of the cd. I wish that KD Lang's sultry interpretation of "Love for Sale" was included on the cd. My personal favorite tracks on the soundtrack has to be the lush, orchestral sounds of "Madeline" and the seductive ballad "Dwight and Kay". Unfortunately the songs tend to sound alike and listening to "The Black Dahlia" feels like one long extended track. I hope for his next project, Mark Isham won't create music as dreary and monotonous as what I heard on this soundtrack.

I pre-ordered because I fell in love with music from the trailer and Mark's Crash soundtrack was awesome. This soundtrack is horrible, horrible, horrible. I played it once and will never again.
