This review is from: The Black Death (Epidemic!) (Library Binding)
My daughter checked this book out from the library and I was the one who ended up reading it first. Epidemic! The Black Death is a bit graphic and gruesome, but so was life at the time of the plauge! I delves into history more than I thought it would, yet keeps a pace such that it doesn't bore the reader. It does allude to the people's belief in God and His wrath being substituted for scientific knowledge of what actually caused the plague (germs), but didn't carry it to the point of being offensive. I saw it as a teaching opportunity actually. It does mention church history where applicable, but does so more in a manner of stating facts and not passing judgement. (i.e. mentions the crusades and how they opened up trade routes again that had closed after the fall of Rome.)

I liked this book so much that I bought it and copies of the author's Epidemic! books on influenza, cholera and smallpox. This book could be used for upper elementary (if you read it to them or have a very good reader), but due to content and reading level, is more suited for the typical middle school student and up. It will definitely help pull history together and paint a great mental picture of the middle ages!
