Amazon.com Review

Looking for power and convenience? Here are both. Black & Decker's Grass Hog automatic feed string trimmer/edger is a great buy for the gardener who needs to whack weeds regularly. Its powerful 4.2 amp motor provides superior trimming of heavy weeds, grass, and overgrowth. You can use this trimmer to whack the most unruly weeds or to simply maintain and trim long grass and sparse dandelions. The 12-inch cutting path and 10,000 rpm get the job done fast. No wonder it's called the Grass Hog! This Black & Decker is easy to maneuver and can be used to trim weeds in hard-to-reach places where other trimmers fail. It will also challenge thicker weeds, but watch out for vines, which can get tangled up above the cutting spool.

Black & Decker definitely keeps the consumer in mind by offering convenience and comfort while trimming. Perhaps the best feature of this trimmer is its auto-feed string: you'll never need to bump the trimmer head while trimming to get more string (though you may need to refill the string more often). An adjustable, textured top handle provides firm gripping and maximum control. Weighing about 6 pounds, this string trimmer is not too heavy, even for longer jobs. We like that the vibration in your hands after a long trimming job is minimal and that this trimmer doubles as an edger. The Groom 'N' Edge button rotates the trimmer head 180 degrees to convert the trimmer to an edger and back again. In seconds, you can turn the head, and you'll hear the snap when it's in place. An edge guide provides precise trimming and edging around sidewalks and driveways and does a good job of keeping you at a safe distance from rocks or even the side of your deck or house. The cord retention system prevents accidental cord disconnection, which is especially useful when you're hard at work in the yard and the cord is extended.

This string trimmer, as well as most other electric trimmers, is best suited for small yards that are accessible with an extension cord. Because electric trimmers are generally lighter and more comfortable, they are easy to handle. If you're looking to whack unruly weeds on your otherwise well-maintained yard, this electric trimmer is a less-powerful yet sufficient alternative to more expensive gas-powered trimmers. Be sure to wear hand, eye, and foot protection when operating any trimmer. A 30 day no-risk satisfaction guarantee and full two-year warranty are included.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only lasted 2 seasons, May 14, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker 12-Inch Grass Hog Automatic Feed String Trimmer Edger with Auto Feed Spool GH400 (Lawn & Patio)
My Grass Hog suffered the same maladies as some other reviewers have written.

My initial concern about the volume/cost of string consumed was lessened when I switched to wrapping the spools myself with the bulk professional trimmer line sold at Home Depot.

The plastic holder for the handle snapped off while I had it turned upside down to replace a spool. Fortunately, I was able to reattach the handle using longer screws and duct tape.

The string cutter blade snapped off. Despite this, I was able to continue to use the trimmer as the string would get trimmed by the sharp plastic edge that remained from where the blade had been attached. Eventually, the plastic edge dulled to the point where it no longer cut the string and it wrapped itself around the motor shaft snapping the internal plastic parts controlling the spool. At that point, the trimmer was useless and I trashed it.

Overall, I was pleased with the performance of the unit, both in cutting and the auto-feed function. Having only gotten two seasons out of it was disappointing. Due to its lack of durability, I would only recommend the unit to anyone with small to moderate trimming needs.

3.0 out of 5 stars convenient but ..., August 13, 2000

This review is from: Black & Decker 12-Inch Grass Hog Automatic Feed String Trimmer Edger with Auto Feed Spool GH400 (Lawn & Patio)
I am now on my second Grasshog, a fact which attests both to the appeal of a no-bump trimmer as well as the fragility of this model. On our first one, like one of the reviewers above, the line cutting blade fell off which allowed the string to wrap about the spool housing and quickly burnt the motor out (along with some of the plastic parts nearby). The second problem with this model is the speed with which it goes through nylon line. It takes more than one spool to trim our property. At five dollars or so for each replacement spool, this adds up quickly. But still, the model is remarkable for its convenience and for the ease with which the spool can be replaced. Overall, a good idea flawed by some significant design problems.

1.0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker GH400, June 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker 12-Inch Grass Hog Automatic Feed String Trimmer Edger with Auto Feed Spool GH400 (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased a GrassHog string trimmer/edger because in the store it seemed to be the easiest for me the handle from a wheelchair. It worked very well at first. After running two spools of line through it, the plastic gaurd broke and the knife that cutts the string broke. Without anyway for the string to be trimmed, it kept feeding off until it wrapped around under the trimmer head. There doesn't seem to be anyway to remove the head if grass or other things wrap around it. This makes it difficult to remove wound up grass/string. I e-mailed B&D and they sent a new guard right out. The only problem is that this one only lasted one full spool of line. (They also sent a new spool of line.) If the guard were stronger and the head removable, this would be a great product.
