5.0 out of 5 stars Great Screwdriver, August 31, 2007

The Black and Decker Versapak idea was the best one to come along when it comes to cordless drivers. Many of the other brands on the market are good drivers, the only problem is when you are in the middle of a task and the driver dies out, you are stuck waiting for the driver to recharge. Not with the Versapak battery, as long as you buy yourself a spare battery, you'll never be without power. I keep one battery in the charger at all times. When my driver needs charging, it's as simple as switching out the battery with the one in the charger. You are back up and running in no time.

I've had other rechargeable screwdrivers, but as I said earlier, they have a self contained battery, which requires that you plug it into the charger and wait for the battery to reach a full charge. This is not convenient if you are using the driver often and it never fails, it runs out right in the middle of a project. The worst part about other drivers with sealed in batteries... when the batteries no longer hold a charge, you've got to toss the whole unit. Not with the Black and Decker Versapak unit. All you need to buy is a new battery and you are back in business.

I've owned the older model the VP750 for years and it gave me years and years of good service. It finally bit the dust after being used very well. This driver is well made and has withstood several instances where the driver was dropped, even off the top of a 6 foot ladder directly onto a concrete walk. It still works like a champ.

The only drawback that I can give it is that it is a single speed and when you are driving long screws, it seems to take a long time. It would be nice if Black and Decker would give it an optional higher speed. Still, the single speed is swift enough to take care of most tasks. The clutch feature makes stripping screws a thing of the past, but you can override it when you really need to wrench down on a screw. The other thing that would be nice is a magnetic bit. The one that comes with the unit is not magnetized.

The screwdriver is powerful enough to drive small and medium screws, but don't expect it to drive 3 inch drywall screws into studs without pre-drilling a pilot hole. Even then, really long screws seem to be a bit tough for this little driver to handle, so use a drill to do the big jobs. But for hanging blinds, assembling things, changing out electrical switches and light fixtures and installing cabinet hardware, it can't be beat.

The driver pivots into a near "L" profile, which is what I end up using most of the time. The whole driver is a bit large for tight spaces, but then so are most drivers. I like the quick change double ended bit (Phillips and slotted). This is especially useful when changing out electrical outlets where the plate has a slotted screw head and the outlet has a Phillips head! Just pop the bit out and turn it over and there you go.

It's unfortunate that Black and Decker has eliminated the Versapak system from most of their line. Thankfully they've kept it in production for this driver. Buy an extra Versapak battery to keep one charged at all times and you'll never be stuck in the middle of a project with a dead driver on hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tool, November 9, 2007

I have a lot of corded and cordless tools but this is the one I use when I am working on small stuff. It fits in any of the pockets of my jeans. The "pouch" that comes with it is really nice. There's a pocket for a spare battery and a decent assortment of bits. There is a small pocket in the pouch where I carry a 1/4 in chuck that plugs into the quick change end so that I can use standard drills if necessary. Not something that you want to do for big jobs but it's OK for a pilot hole or two. Power is adequate for small jobs. The battery is the "silver" type. Too bad they don't include a "gold" in new products.

This system should be re-marketed to the home owner. It's the best out there for most jobs. It's light, fast enough, extremely convenient if you have two versapak batteriesBlack and Decker VP105 VersaPak 3.6-Volt 1.2 Amp Hour NiCad Stick Style Battery, 2 Pack. I'm going to start giving them for gifts. Beats the new, bulky powerhouse tools hands down!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good battery screwdriver, March 2, 2008

This Black&Decker screwdriver comes with two sets of driver bits. It works very well, is very lightweight and compact and an excellent alternative to using a much heavier battery powered drill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price, April 24, 2009
This review is from: Black & Decker VP800 3.6-Volt Versapak Screwdriver (Misc.)
This is a decent screwdriver that has an adjustable torque collet that works pretty good. Battery holds charge for over 3 weeks and works fine.

I would've given it 5 stars had the motor shaft not been bent. It is a little difficult to insert small screws when the shaft wobbles as you are trying to work. B&D needs better quality control for the shaft should be straight within 0.5 degree from the factory. Not hard to do.

I purchased this to have around the house for small jobs, to save stress on hands and wrists. It does the job quite nicely. So far, it's been able to easily drive screws in each case we've tried - plaster walls, wood, aluminum, and do so with relative ease. There's a torque dial to help with the needed strength of turning. It's a little heavy to hold, but that's minimal, compared to the benefits.

I haven't figured out how to use the angled part well, because it makes it too hard (for *me, with hand problems) to drive the screw when you can't hold it straight. But I'm sure the angle would do fine if the particular screw use didn't require some hand pressure. Overall, I'd definitely buy it again. It's GREAT for anyone who has thumb and/or wrist problems that are exacerbated by using a standard screwdriver.

5.0 out of 5 stars very useful, September 19, 2010
This review is from: Black & Decker VP800 3.6-Volt Versapak Screwdriver (Misc.)
I use this in place of my screw drivers and my drill, in part. I bought a hex-shanked drill bits. It will do light drilling and make pilot holes into any wood. I now rarely reach for a regular drill and this tool will do a large proportion of that work. I got rid of my battery powered drill and I'm down to this and a corded drill and these two tools cover all my needs for this type of work. Granted, if I'm drilling 1/4 holes its not fast but unless I'm doing several on a large project, again, I just use this. You can also get drill chucks to fit it. With a pair of gold batteries using this for electrical work, you can work non-stop. I can say it will put 1 1/2 in. dry wall screw into pine all the way.

This battery powered screwdriver can be adjusted to a 45% angle and has variable speed/torque settings. Has plenty of power and really saves your hand when screwing in or out long screws or bolts. I can't figure out why they are so hard to find now-a-days. Before buing on-line I had looked for several months at Lowes and Home Depot and never saw this type screw driver. Why aren't they being stocked anymore? I also like being able to swap out the batteries if one should run down, no waiting for the battery to recharge. This is a good buy and product.
