Keeps on tickin' but never ticked particularly well,
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO350 Toast-R-Oven (Kitchen)
We've had one of these Black & Decker "Toast-R-Oven" units for close to 5 years now. However, it is showing signs of wanting to die, so I started looking around on Amazon.com for a replacement. I was a little surprised to see that this model is still being sold and really hasn't changed much at all.The primary appeal of this toaster oven is its low price. It also heats up very quickly. Other than that, it is not a particularly great appliance. It toasts very unevenly, and some mornings it decides to run hot and it burns the toast if you aren't watching it closely. Plus, it has that typical toaster problem where the thermostat prevents you from making more than a couple of pieces of toast in a row without the unit continually trying to shut itself off. The broiler will burn things quickly because the interior space is so limited, so we never use it. And the oven feature is not particularly capable or powerful. In fact, although the dial says it can go up to 500 degrees, I suspect that there really isn't much of a setting besides "low" and "high". All in all, there is little to recommend here. This model doesn't even have the front-access crumb drawer that you see on newer models; it has the old-style hatch on the underside. If you just want a toaster oven for heating up frozen food - something this unit seems to be able to handle - then this unit may be for you. For everyone else, don't make the same mistake we did... spend a bit more and get an oven that actually makes toast.

Consumer Reports was Right...This is Junk,
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO350 Toast-R-Oven (Kitchen)
This so called 'Toaster Oven' has no toast darkness control. Check their own technical details section for confirmation. As such it makes a lousy toaster but an excellent way to waste money. As for the alleged slice capacity of four, I have to wonder where they got their bread. Mine fits 3 slices at best (a little overlap). This is our third Black and Decker toaster-oven and the quality has definitely gone down over the years. This one lasted less than six months before the top burners stopped working and the bottom ones began to sag! After now subscribing to Consumer Reports On-line I would recommend against any of their products.

The item was defective right out of the box & would not stay on long enough to toast bread even with control set to maximum (DARK). The primary reason for purchasing this item was that it could be mounted under cabinet to save counter space. We already had an earlier model so the heat shield was already in place. After determining it to be defective I decided to take a refund in lieu of having it replaced because the quality did not compare with our previous model TRO510 & was informed by Black & Decker that all under cabinet models have been discontinued. I was really impressed with the efficient way Amazon handled my return because I was able to print out a UPS shipping label & return it at no cost to me. I will definitely be doing more shopping at Amazon.com.

In the course of a year we purchased 2 lower end models of B&D Toast-R-Oven. The first one was defective from the outset - only the upper heating elements worked. We let that problem slide as we are not in that vacation place very much. We bought a second one for our home: the thermostat which is supposed to turn off the toaster setting would often catch and not turn off, and also at times opening the door completely to remove the heated item on the toast setting would also not switch off the heating elements. Finally, one day my wife made some toast, and took the toast out before the thermostat automatically turned off the heating elements. Although the door had been opened completely, the oven did not turn off automatically, but she didn't realize this and went into another room with the toast. Within a few minutes, the kitchen was filled with smoke, the plastic parts of the oven were scorching, and the oven never automatically turned itself off: there were flames coming out of the thing. She was able to unplug it and get it out into the yard to hose the oven down. Had she taken the toast out and, say, hopped into the car, the house would have burned down. So this is two B&D defective ovens in 2 consecutive purchases. These facts speak for themselves - avoid this product or its similar models, and get another brand of better quality. It's worth the few extra bucks in cost...

I bought a new one because the old one (5 years!) lost its toasting ability. It had to be the same one, because the hanging spot was there. My new toaster oven is a throwback to an earlier era: couldn't B&D add some bells and whistles? The price is higher then 5 years ago! The toasting situation is dire: even though my dial is turned to "darkest" the bread comes out hot and soft.

Sometimes burns toast, sometimes does not toast at all. Leaks heat. Started making an annoying buzzing sound. Now the "toast" button does not work - as soon as you press it, the toaster turns off again.

I purchased this item to replace an old space saver BD, it fits perfectly and operates just fine, I'm sure there are bigger and better but larger toaster ovens, if you're looking to hang an oven in order to save counter space this is it!

The unit I purchased was a replacement for one that had served us well for many years. After reading the reviews from others, I was hesitant to get another one. However, I liked the space saver design and had the heat deflector, an extra cost piece, already installed.I ordered the unit in March. They were out of stock for almost a month. When it did arrive, It would not make toast. The toaster switch would not remain energized. I called warranty service. The woman asked me to clip the plug and send it to them and, upon receipt of the plug, they would replace the unit. I sent them the plug. They sent another unit out about two weeks later. The second unit caught fire. The top rear heating element, on its first use as an oven, glowed red in the middle of the element and then started to stream sparks, much like a Fourth of July sparkler. The element then buckled. I immediately unplugged the unit and called customer service again. This time, they replaced the unit without me having to return the plug. They have asked for the units back, sending prepaid shipping labels. I still have to take the units to the post office. The current unit is working fine. If I was at Black and Decker, I'd be having more than a serious discussion with my component suppliers. I noticed that the price for the unit has increased about 14% from when I bought it in March. Maybe the increase will help finance the increased warranty claim costs.

This toaster oven is a waste of money. The "on" light burned out in one month. At five months the top heating element burned out. It is a cheap appliance and has a very cheap feel and very poor quality.

I've been very happy with this toaster oven that we bought a few years ago on amazon.com. It is compact, toasts bread and nuts very quickly and evenly and is much better for heating up a leftover pizza slice than the microwave. However, I am looking for a new one since the start button has failed - that button is not well designed and after some metal fatigue due to much use, no longer connects with a lever inside the oven control box to turn it on. Took it apart once to re-rig the switch, but it was clear it would only be temporary and indeed it is failing again. So, great oven, but maybe not if you are looking for a 10 year one!
