4.0 out of 5 stars Kansas housewife review
This product earns it's cost after one season of use -- no pumping as with the manual type tanks -- wheels that pull the unit easily through grass so you don't have to carry it -- quickly distributes an entire tank of "whatever" on my flowers, shrubs, and lawn. 2.0 out of 5 stars Battery Charge Doesn't Last Long
This sprayer performed great while the batteries were charged. The pressure was even and the tip made a nice, fine spray. The trouble is no matter how long I charged the batteries, they would go dead after spraying only about 1.5 gallons of liquid -- they couldn't even empty one tank-full of liquid. This caused big problems for the project I was working on. The...

This product earns it's cost after one season of use -- no pumping as with the manual type tanks -- wheels that pull the unit easily through grass so you don't have to carry it -- quickly distributes an entire tank of "whatever" on my flowers, shrubs, and lawn. The only drawback I encountered was with understanding the rechargable batteries. Per B&D customer service, you must keep the batteries in the recharging unit whenever the sprayer is not in use or they slowly discharge and won't be ready when you are. Also, I sometimes need more then 3 tanks of liquid when spraying very large areas so I will probably buy the B&D "gold" rechargable batteries which are suppose to have 60% more usage time versus the batteries that come with the unit. Great Product - I'm buying another one for my Dad.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good sprayer, October 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker 7.2-volt Cordless Power Sprayer VP450 (Lawn & Patio)
Important things to know about this sprayer are:
1. You have to be VERY careful not to lose the 'O' ring that seals the top. It is hard to find a replacement and the sprayer will not work correctly without it. What happens is that the machine keeps running because it's trying to pressurize the tank, but because the tank will not seal without the 'O' ring, the constant running of the machine will drain the batteries. If you hear hissing, and the machine keeps running and running, the tank is not properly sealed. You need to unscrew the top and put it back on again to get a seal. Once you get the hang of closing it, it's not a problem.
2. If you have a larger than average yard, you should buy an extra set of the rechargeable batteries so you don't run out of power before you are done spraying. I always recharge the batteries the night before I'm going to spray.
3. The sprayer is somewhat 'tippy' over uneven ground.

Other than those 3 things, (which are not really serious problems but should be taken into consideration) this is a very easy way to apply sprays in the garden. The sprayer produces a good spray and is easy to use. It is much easier to use than the kind of sprayers you have to pump by hand. I have used mine for 2 years and am very satisfied with it.

The trouble is no matter how long I charged the batteries, they would go dead after spraying only about 1.5 gallons of liquid -- they couldn't even empty one tank-full of liquid. This caused big problems for the project I was working on. The product description says that it can spray "up to" 9 gallons of liquid on a single battery charge. Either my unit has some battery problems or B&D is wildly exagerating. ...

4.0 out of 5 stars I have one am am happy, June 10, 2000

Tired of hand pumping I got this to ease my job. The flow is uniform. I only use it to spray foliage fertilizer and sometimes pesticides. The battery charger works perfect if you fully charge it overnight. But for shorter period of charge (3-4 hrs) the battery drains out fast. Other than this I really enjoy this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a decent sprayer, June 24, 2003

After years of toting around those ball-and-chain, manually pumped sprayers (BCMPS), finally someone (B&D) has taken a step back and thought "Gee, why don't we jump into the 21st century and design something that works"

Well hats off to Black and Decker. They actually did it. The VP450 is all that is advertised and more. I've paid 3x the cost of the VP450 for back-pack sprayers, only to come away with a sore back (3 gal=about 25 pounds) and a poorly sprayed residence/yard (hard to crawl under porches, etc). This is a very well-designed, quality sprayer that combines an efficient pump, spacious 3 gal tank, long/flexible hose, and an excellent spray nozzle...all for $...!! I usually get three tank fulls without any battery deterioration (gold-series batteries) and the very long throw spray distance makes residence coverage a breeze.

Don't even think of another BCMPS sprayer! This is a winner.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dangerously Defective Tank?, June 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker 7.2-volt Cordless Power Sprayer VP450 (Lawn & Patio)
I am deeply disappointed in this B&D sprayer. The threads on the tank hose connection were badly formed and , under pressure, blew the hose connection off dousing me with a tankful of Roundup. I contacted B&D and they sent a replacement tank, with threads like the first. Since their closest service center is 80 miles away and Amazon.com was kind enough to provide me with a prepaid return label, I chose to return the product for a refund. I viewed a friend's tank purchased three years ago and the threads were "V" shaped, sharp and deep, unlike those on either tank I was provided. Obviously B&D is having problems and one should avoid this product until they are corrected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black&Decker VP450 7.2-volt cordless Power Sprayer, March 31, 2003
This review is from: Black & Decker 7.2-volt Cordless Power Sprayer VP450 (Lawn & Patio)
I love the unit!! I have two of them. One is used for weed killers, and the other is used for general spraying. I keep the sprayers loaded at all times, and ready to go! The battery generally lasts a full tankfull and then some! Buy an extra battery pac, and you'r in buisness if you only have one sprayer. The best thing since sliced bread! Fantastic!

I love it. I no longer have the strenght or stamina for a pump and carry sprayer on my 1/2 acre. I was looking for an alternative to the $370 Mantis brand, and this is it. The price is right and it works well. The sprayer wand is plastic so I don't know how long it will last, but so far no problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A huge time saver!, September 14, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker 7.2-volt Cordless Power Sprayer VP450 (Lawn & Patio)
I've used this sprayer twice and I think it is great. I've cut my weed spraying time from over two hours to about an hour. I also think I am using less weed killer than I did with my old tank sprayer. I have about 1/2 acre of avocado trees and need to spray the weeds under them frequently. I didn't realize how much time I spent pumping my old tank sprayer and how slowly it sprayed as the pressure dropped. The constant 20psi of this sprayer really saves a huge amount of time. I've never run the batteries down and use the entire tank contents. The only improvement I would like to see is larger wheels. I occassionally have to drag it over the rougher terrain of my grove and it also is easy to tip over. Even still, the current design is better than lugging my old tank sprayer around and much more efficient.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cordless Power Sprayer, May 12, 2002
By
This review is from: Black & Decker 7.2-volt Cordless Power Sprayer VP450 (Lawn & Patio)
This sprayer is a good idea but we have found some problems. We have 80 acreas and the terrain is not always perfectly smooth. The tank tips and twists a lot. I also have trouble rolling over the line with the wheels and getting tangled in the line. We've only used the sprayer about 6 times and the batteries will only stay charged for more than about 10 minutes. When I charged and used the new batteries, just out of the carton, they would only stay charged about the same amount of time. Therefore, you cannot spray much! Actually, we would like to return the sprayer because of these problems but the store would not since it sat in the garage all winter! The idea is good!
