Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Remove wrinkles from delicate silk blouses and hardier linens with this Black & Decker steam iron. The iron boasts six fabric heat settings to cover synthetic material, cotton, and wool alike. Set on the lower temperature settings, the iron suits dry ironing purposes. Operating at 1400 watts, the 120-volt iron reaches the pre-set temperature within a minute. The iron further endears itself to users with its padded latex-free handle for ergonomic comfort while pressing.

The steam iron features a nonstick soleplate that moves smoothly over fabrics while providing even heat and steam. Built-in lights indicate power and temperature readiness. Steam bursts, fine mist, and varied steam patterns expand the iron's utility. The iron also adapts for vertical use on curtains and hanging long dresses. Prior to steaming, fill the iron with tap water with the provided fill cup. In the event of extremely hard tap water, Black & Decker recommends mixing with distilled water. For home safety, the iron shuts off automatically after sitting idle for ten minutes. Pressing the automatic reset button allows users to resume ironing with the same settings. The power cord pivots 360 degrees to increase maneuverability and uses a polarized plug. After use, the iron self-cleans itself by flushing out any mineral or impure deposits collected through the ironing process. To store the iron, unplug and wrap the cord gently around the iron. Stow the iron set on the dry setting to prevent water leaks. As with any electrical appliance, read the enclosed warnings and safety guidelines prior to use. Black & Decker offers a one-year limited warranty for this item. Made in China, the iron measures 11-2/3 by 5-3/4 by 6-1/2 inches and weighs 3 pounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is all you need!, December 29, 2004

I dashed out to buy this one when I was in the middle of packing for a trip and my old Rowenta gave out. I'll never go back. Forget the more expensive irons - this one does the job and it's all you really need! I use mine every day in the sewing room as well. You'll get way more than your money's worth out of this iron

3.0 out of 5 stars Gets it done but not easily, May 3, 2005

M "Auntie Em" (Fairfield: CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black & Decker AS150 Steam Advantage Iron (Kitchen)
Bought this to replace a retractable cord iron and wish I'd been able to find a better replacement. Some mook has decided that the control wheel belongs under the handle, which is frustrating if you have even medium hands. I constantly bump that wheel and spin the dial up hotter than it needs to be, so have to check EVERY pass so I don't burn delicate laces or satins. Nor is there and off mode on the wheel, just a min. setting that cools the iron quickly. The steam control is thumb accessible if you have the strength of Superman, I am arthritic and need to set the iron down to change the steam. Filling the reservoir was easy WITH THE PROVIDED cup, don't lose that or you'll find yourself trying to find a funnel tiny enough to get into that opening. The cord was not as intrusive as some irons, neither was it completely out of the way.
My last beef is what my friend calls the "old lady safety", the auto turn-off. Every five minutes of non-use, this thing makes a tiny beeping noise and then *poof*, shuts down completely and cools rapidly. Great if you're a forgetful ironer, but stinks for a sewing maniac who prefers to have the iron on all the time. Plus, when the iron is tilted flat again, the iron starts back up and doesn't seem to shut down if it remains flat and motionless for a long period of time. This could be more dangerous than simply leaving the thing upright. I'd rather have control over shutdown mode and have the iron turn itself off if it were left flat too long.
Otherwise, it gets the job done well enough. The silver sole plate seems very smooth, though mine is clogged with minerals after only two uses, which I never had with other irons here. I didn't feel like the iron performed as well as one with a teflon plate, I had to boost the control knob higher than I was comfortable with to smooth out satin wrinkles and had trouble getting it to work on linen despite having it jacked to the highest setting. Good weight and good heat up/ recovery times though. I guess if you're looking for inexpensive iron this one will suffice. If you are a quilter or seamstress, pass it by.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just a cheap iron, August 14, 2005
This review is from: Black & Decker AS150 Steam Advantage Iron (Kitchen)
We are hard on our iron, using it daily, dropping it... We have spent 100-150 dollars on our last couple and I was just couldn't make myself do it agian so I thought I'd try something cheap. The only really positive thing I can say about this iron is it has alot of steam. This incluldes when using the steam settings and when you push the blast of steam button. But it's prone to collecting burnt starch on the bottom of the iron suface and it has some sort of "non-stick" coating on it that just creates drag when you iron. Over all I don't really like the iron but I got what I paid for.
