Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Black & Decker's 9-Volt Stud Sensor is a simple, yet indispensable tool that detects the location of studs up to 3/4-inch thick. This compact, easy-to-use stud finder operates by moving over the surface of the wall. LED lights on the stud finder light-up to accurately indicate the location of studs.

From the Manufacturer

Black & Decker introduces a Stud Sensor line with four stud finders that take the guesswork out of locating wood or metal studs and wires to hang pictures, install closet shelving, run chair railing, and more. Whether you are a pro, do-it-yourselfer or decorator, one of the four Stud Sensors will help you get the job done faster and easier. The four Stud Sensors are: BDL150S Deep Stud Finder detects wood studs; the BDL151S Deep Stud Finder detects woods studs in thicker walls; the BDL152S Stud & Metal Finder detects wood and metal studs with a continuous AC warning that alerts you to hot or live electrical wires; and the BDL153S Stud & Metal & Wire Finder detects studs, metal and wire with a separate switch for wire. The Stud Sensors detect studs, metal, and wire through walls by sensing the differences in wall density between studs and the hollow spaces in your walls. The Stud Sensors have both audible and visual indicators that show when the edge of a stud is located. It is always best to hang shelves, photographs, artwork, and other items securely into the studs in your walls. If these items are secured only in the drywall, nails and anchors can come loose under their own weight over time. With the diameter of a stud being less than 1 inch thick and studs being placed either every 16 inches or 24 inches, depending on the construction of your home, it isn't always easy to guesstimate a stud's location. Without a stud sensor you can only guess where studs may be hidden under your walls. This usually results in driving a nail or anchor between the studs in the empty spaces in your walls, leaving holes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to toolbox, April 10, 2004
This review is from: Black & Decker BDL150S Bull's Eye Wood Stud Sensor (Tools & Home Improvement)
We recently moved from an older home where the walls were so solid you could hang pictures anywhere. our new place is new though and as seems to be the usual case uses a very thin kind of plaster board. After unsuccessfully trying to hang some pictures and having them fall down I got this and hey presto, everything is now up and most importantly staying up. The manual wasn't very good and it took me a few goes to get the hang of it, but I'd recommend it to anyone who has pictures, and, or heavy mirrors to hang.

I bought this after failing at finding studs with the 'tapping till you hear a solid sound' method. I may as well have just drilled holes every inch until I hit wood. That's how accurate that method was for me. This unit works very well and is easy to use. Not a lot of bells and whistles, just locates the edges of studs. You mark each edge and you'll never miss a stud again. I like that better than ones that find the center of the stud because sometimes you need a little leeway where you want to put a screw. You can't go wrong with this product at this price.

If I didn't keep the instruction paper wrapped around this with a rubber band, I would never remember how this works. It will find the stud, but will you know where it is? Too complicated. I rarely need it so I am not buying another, but I wouldn't buy this again if it came up missing.
