1.0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker? Whatever!
First, I want to say that nowhere on the box, bugzapper, instructions, or packing it say Black and Decker. I could not even find this on Black and Deckers website. But beyond that, this could have been made a lot better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker? Whatever!, July 21, 2005

First, I want to say that nowhere on the box, bugzapper, instructions, or packing it say Black and Decker. I could not even find this on Black and Deckers website. But beyond that, this could have been made a lot better.

First, the openings for the bugs are very small. I was as if they made this unit to be hung in a kids room. It produces almost no light for the bugs to "see."

Second, there is alost no way to clean the bugs off of the electric wires. The instructions say to use a blow dryer to blow them off, but it is like using a blow dryer to remove bugs from the front of your car.

Third, there is no on/off switch. When it is plugged in, it is on. Something this simple on the power cord would have been nice.

The unit kills the bus that get near it, but it does not "attract" bugs from my backyard like it should. Almost any other light source is brighter, so the bugs are attracted to them (the patio light, for example) rather than the bug zapper. I would recommend a different zapper.

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbage, September 25, 2005

This is a piece of garbage, moths and other insects just walk right across the grid with no effect on them at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pure Junk!, April 13, 2008
This review is from: Black & Decker BZ115 Pest X Bug Zapper (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased this item, and took it back in two days. It says in the directions to blow the dead insects off the electric grids, with a hair dryer. Which I don't think a hair dryer could get the job done anyway. The other problem is when you unplug the device most of the insects that were on the grids would fly away! The grids are not strong enough to kill the insects, they just keep them alive, and stuck to the grids! As soon as you turn the item off, the insects all fly away! Bug Zappers that I have owned in the past would zap ever bug that entered, and you would hear the zapping sound. Not this one, it might zap one insect an hour or so, but the rest would all still be alive! It has a Black and Decker Name on the box, BUT IS NOT MADE BY BLACK AND DECKER! It's made by a no-name company that came with a 800 number for 7 days a week customer service, but they were always closed no matter what day or time I called! So please do not waste your time or money on this item !

3.0 out of 5 stars Cleaning the BZ115 bug zapper, August 13, 2010
This review is from: Black & Decker BZ115 Pest X Bug Zapper (Lawn & Patio)
As all others I became frustrated at cleaning all dem critters out but found a solution: medium difficulty: Remove the pinch plate that protects the bulb from bottom of housing. Carefully remove the bulb by slightly pull and wiggle action. Remove four screws from bottom plate. Remove the plate. Then remove four additional screws holding the bottom section to the rib cage. Remove the bottom section and presto, them critters will be all over the place. I used a high powered yard blower to blow out the carcasses and hosed off the separated parts: bottom section and bottom plate. Realign all the parts and secure with the screws. Be sure to realign the bottom section bulb access to the interior bulb plug-in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well for different applications, January 16, 2010

For my purposes, I like the fine, close together wire vs. large mesh (Small bugs just fly right through the large stuff & I don't care about killing June bugs).
I use the product indoors in an animal room, or in the kitchen. It works wonderfully for fruit flies & other small, pesky flies.
As one reviewer said, why would you want to attract outdoor insects from the surrounding areas?

As far as cleaning goes, I can't see that a blow dryer would work, but an air compressor does the job nicely.

My complaints about it are that it's only available seasonally & is difficult to find even then, & that one of mine lasted less than a year & quit zapping the bugs, & the other's plastic hanging top broke under its own weight.

I like the other reviewer's idea for zapping fleas :)

3.0 out of 5 stars Generic, July 19, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker BZ115 Pest X Bug Zapper (Lawn & Patio)
Yep, even Black and Decker website doesn't pride this item enough to sell it. It's probably some knock-off import with the B&D Brand name. The light is so dim I can't imagine how a bug would be attracted to it. Stinger brand sucks too ... mine lasted only one season before the grid stopped working. I read a couple articles and now I'm not sure bug zappers are the way to go. The article raised a question - why would anyone want to "attract" bugs in the first place? Good question. It recommends sticking to tried and proven technology - good old Deet applied to the skin. Even stated that citronelle candles are a waste of money. Live and learn.
