5.0 out of 5 stars Black and Decker Paintstick
I painted a large room in 2 hours with the paintstick instead of the 2 days we planned using an old fashioned roller. No drips, no mess, and the paint went on the wall perfectly smooth. Normally when you pour paint on to a roller tray there's a mess. None of that with the paintstick.

Wish I had this 20 years ago. I've painted so many rooms in the last 3...

5.0 out of 5 stars Black and Decker Paintstick, January 15, 2007

Wish I had this 20 years ago. I've painted so many rooms in the last 3 houses. This would have cut the work by 75%. Cleaning isn't that bad.

The other reviewer who had drips and splatters had to be doing something wrong. And I had no wasted paint. When I was done I followed the instructions to get the paint in the handle and roller mechanism back into the can. Worked perfectly.

I still hate to paint, but this device made the process a whole lot easier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Painting Product Ever!, October 11, 2006
This review is from: Black & Decker C800616 5-Piece PaintStick (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have been a fan of the Paint Stick for 20 years now - yes the product has been out that long. It's ingeniously easy to use and almost mess free. It's fast, seriously cut your painting time by more than half. The cool part is painting right from the can, no pouring paint, no drips and no trays. It does take almost a full tube to get the roller going but you can roll most that paint out.
Someone who doesn't cover their floor (especially carpet) before painting has issues. Why in the world would you clean it if you through it away?
Cleaning is easy; just pump the handle to flush with water. I throw the rollers away because they are too hard to clean and they're only 5 bucks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good!, March 11, 2007

Having had a bad experience with another brand, I was somewhat reluctant to order this item, however I did. My fears were unfounded, as this product does exactly what it says it will, and it does it well! Only 4 stars because clean up is a chore. B&D does make a cleaner tool for the rollers, and it might be advisable. Definitely pleased with this item, and am considering buying one for my son!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Painting Tool Ever!, February 17, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker C800616 5-Piece PaintStick (Tools & Home Improvement)
I have bought nearly every tool which is supposed to make painting easier and this is the only one that actually does! My son and I just painted a 14 by 14 room in about 2 hours using this. The room has 18 foot ceilings and using the Paint Stick saved a huge amount of time. Using the Paint Stick I was able to climb up a 14 foot ladder and paint a large area without having to climb back down to fill a paint tray or try to balance a roller and tray. There is absolutely no mess, i did not have any problems with drips or leaks like one reviewer complained of. I have used these before and just thrown them away, but today I cleaned it and it really wasn't too bad, about 15 to 20 minutes. This item is worth every cent!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good in some situations, April 27, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker C800616 5-Piece PaintStick (Tools & Home Improvement)
Ok, some people are going to love this product, and some will hate it. Here's a rundown of when this tool would be good to use:

* You have good upper body strength, or you have a collection of helpers that can take turns. The roller does not rotate as freely as a plain-old paint roller, and requires some pressure to operate effectively. If you are a little on the noodly side, this will probably not work for you, unless you can make up for it in stubbornness during the job and pain-killers the next day.

* You have a large area that you must paint in one go, walls or floors only (using this on the ceiling would probably require extremely good upper body strength; unless you're one of those hardbody types, I would not bother). Using this is not worth it if you're dealing with a small area. A good rule of thumb; if what you're painting requires less than a 5-gallon bucket of paint, or you are doing less than a few gallons at a time, you probably should not bother with this. This is because cleanup is rather involved. You should expect to spend 10-15 minutes on cleanup of this tool (in addition to any other cleanup), and failing to perform this cleanup _will_ make this tool unusable the next time you need it. You _must_ thoroughly flush it out, disassemble it, make sure you pick any paint out of the various washer assemblies, and so on.

* You are dealing with latex paint. I mention this because paint-sprayers are extremely poor at dealing with latex paint, especially the little DIY electric models. Also, cleanup of this tool when using oil-based paint is probably extremely difficult, given the amount of flushing out with water that is required for latex.

If your situation matches all of the above criteria, this is a great tool to have. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Now, on to a couple of finer points.

1) When cleaning, you must make sure to _thoroughly_ disassemble, and clean all the little fiddly bits, especially the washer assemblies on the roller end. Failure to do so will cause this tool to leak _profusely_. You have been warned.

2) When drawing paint into the stick, you must ensure that the seal between the stick and the draw-stem is very tight. You cannot just push the stem into the stick and expect it to stay tight without keeping constant pressure on it. This means either pouring paint into a standard 1 gallon bucket (which lets you use the stem+lid combo), having a helper to hold the stem in place, or having long arms and patience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall good, but they need a better roller cover, April 5, 2008
By
This review is from: Black & Decker C800616 5-Piece PaintStick (Tools & Home Improvement)
This product worked as well as it said it would and I was happy with it. The clean up was not too bad. The one part that I was very disappointed in was the quality of the roller cover. It says that it was 3/8" nap, but it was a very thick 3/8" and it was just a knit cover that kept on shedding. So the whole time I was picking the lint off the wall. I haven't decided if I am going to use it for the final coat; maybe if I can figure out how to make a good roller cover work, by drilling holes in it.

The concept of this product is wonderful and I have used them twice before when they first came on the market. When they first came out they were great, however while this product is still great, the roller is of the worst cheap quality I have ever had the displeasure of using. Since it was bought online and I neglected to think about buying extras (as it was never an issue when it first came out) I was stuck with using the garbage roller and the job it did was poor poor poor. I had waited quite a while for it to come in the first place, so the idea that I would have to wait that long again for a better quality roller was discouraging as I wanted to paint and be ready for Christmas. I ended by buying a complete paint set with regular roller anyway, so I am extremely, no disgustingly unsatisfied with the product.

If this review keeps someone else from buying this product, then it will have been worth the time. I am extremely disappointed in Black and Decker which at one time was a very good name brand. I will re-think any further purchases in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars FAST AND EASY !!, July 30, 2009

I love this product. I set it up and had my first coat on in one hour....no spatter and a nice even amount of paint out at a time. I did not find clean up any worse than regular clean up , done correctly all paint jobs require more prep and clean up time than actual paint time. I would highly recommend this paint stick.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry - it's a NO for me, November 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker C800616 5-Piece PaintStick (Tools & Home Improvement)
I so wanted to like this product. But it was really hard for me and I wound up using a regular paint roller or even a brush. I had to apply so much pressure to get this one to work that it just wore my arms out. I LOVED the part of getting the paint in the stick - that worked well was really nice to not have a tray but applying the paint was too labor-intensive, seriously. And what others say about the clean up -OMG - forget it. Crazy to try and clean this thing. In fact I did what I could and it's sitting on my deck. So I guess I paid a bit of money to use it for a few walls. The concept - GREAT - just needs some work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolute junk !!! great idea but to bad it doesnt work, June 24, 2010
This review is from: Black & Decker C800616 5-Piece PaintStick (Tools & Home Improvement)
I thought this was going to be a great thing !! but quickly was wrong and what a total waste of money !!! this thing made a bigger mess of paint that using a regular roller, the drip tray that attaches to it had paint building up in it and began dripping over the side all over the tarps i had put down, the paint also leaks out around the roller frame when rolling paint on, i bought a couple of different brand name paints one gallon and the lid did not fit any of them and i cant imagine what paint can this lid would ever fit on. the hole on the stick where you put the tube in began spraying paint out of it when you pushed the paint through as you are rolling after about 5 times of filling it up. the cleaing process was horrible i spent almost an hour cleaning them and let them soak in water over night and the next day the tube was dried up and i could not pull the handle out. the final thing is the replacement rollers are like trying to find a palm tree in the north pole and are 5 $ a roller. I had a 2400 Sq Ft house to paint and only got two rooms painted with these junk sticks !! i would advise anyone thinking about these to not waste your money and stick with a regular roller to save a BIG mess and money !!!
