Tad expensive,

This review is from: Black & Decker CD9602K 9.6-Volt Ni-Cad 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this drill for basic home projects, my utlization extent was not exhaustive neither in terms of project complexity or duration, but it should provide a fairly accurate assesement of this drill set's features.
It is a 9.6V drill, supposedly not too powerful, but for my basic requirements - it proved to be sufficient. One basic test I like to run on a drill is to try and drive a threaded screw in to a dry wall and in to a piece of wood without pre-drilling a hole in the surfaces. This drill failed to do so in both occasions. Guide holes needed to be drilled before the screw could be pushed in. But one advantage this drill provides is the fact that the amount of power to the drill can be controlled by how tightly you squeeze the trigger.... Meaning - in certain circumstances you dont want the drill to rotate very fast... not the torque... but just a slow speed of rotation. By gently squeezing the trigger or by increasing the pressure on the trigger, you can achieve this control. This was a very useful feature. My present more expensive drill set doesnt have this feature. However, it comes with only one battery. So if you do run out of juice in the middle of a project, then you have to wait till the battery is recharged. However, I found another great deal on the Black & Decker Firestorm Cordless Multi-Tool MT1203K-2. Since this model was 12Volts AND had a 12V drill AND a mouse sander AND a jig saw attachment, I exchanged the CD9602K 9.6-Volt for it. I was satisfied with the performance of the CD9602K 9.6-Volt drill. But it seemed a bit pricey at $39.99 and the 9.6V seemed a bit too less. Honest opinion: Go for a drill set that has atleast 2 batteries and has slightly more powerful motor. You will feel better at the end of the day. Kaushik.

First things first: If you're a pro, or a serious woodworker looking for a tool to use every day- or even every week- this ain't the one. It doesn't have the muscle to drive 50 screws deep into wood, or to drill steel, or any of a dozen other things you might want a good cordless drill motor for.
But that's not what I bought it for. I've got a good Makita 1/2" cordless, and a couple of corded drills for that. This was for my girlfriend, who needs a drill once in a blue moon, and would like an electric screw driver for regular tasks around the house. And for that kind of use, it's very good indeed. So if you're looking for a convenient drill for light duty use, the B&D 9.6v is not a bad choice. One hint: The wall wart charger takes a long time to bring the drill up to full charge, so if you're thinking of regular use, get the fast charger and a second battery.

Poorly made batteries,

The batteries B&D uses are not well made. The ones we have are literally falling apart after 2 years (of only occasional use). The replacements are in the 40-50$ range. Each. And since you really need two, that means spending almost 100$ each time they are replaced.

Black and Decker has become really good at putting quality products out at a very reasonable price. This drill/screwdriver is powerful for it's size, and the battery charges last quite a while even under heavy load. On the drill there are different size and shape screwdriver bits that can be easily changed in and out. I've also bought drill attachments and the machine has plenty of power for drilling through walls or floors to install wires, or whatever you may need it to do.

This is just the right size for a woman to handle and use. I find it easier to use than my husbands big bulky one and I can keep it in the house and not have to go to the shop to try and find it.

I disagree with the two prior reviews. I purchased this drill because I had one for nearly 6 years and used it quite regularly. So, when it went bad, I still had 2 - 9.6 volt batteries and no drill. The batteries are still good and work fine. The only draw-back to this drill is no external charger which my old drill had. The battery is charged while in the drill.

This is not a high-powered cordless tool, but neither is it expensive -- quite cheap, in fact, as power tools go. And it is perfectly sufficient for many little jobs around the house where the ability to drive in a couple of screws or drill a hole or two is required. If you want to do major construction, this is not your tool of choice; but if you every so often need to use a screwdriver or drill and have arthritis in your hands, as do I, this is a dandy and very inexpensive tool.

i was able to drill easily small jobs, yet not through wood (like window frame) nor was i able to drill deep holes to place the ikia shelves over my concret wall. need a more powerfull drill, i'm sure the same brand with a higher voltage would do the job.

nice med duty drill. Battery charges ON BOARD THE DRILL, which is a bit unusual. Usually a drill comes with a charger-BASE! Overall, good for household use. Bit inserts are all on board the drill so can change from phillips to straight, etc, very easily.
Price was right, but would upgtade in a minute. Joline |
