I've had a B&D spacesaver can opener for almost 10 years before it finally gave out. We replaced it with this newer model & I hate it. It works, and it doesn't take up counter space, but it's bulky and unattractive in person. The lid that opens & closes sometimes stays closed. You have to slam it shut, but when doing that you risk pushing a little too hard & then it...

Excellent product - using it, you can appreciate the sturdy construction. After reading the negative reviews, I was hesitant to buy it, but I had owned one before and liked it. I realized that the negative reviews were related to installation, so I made sure to carefully read the reviews and customers' advice. I then carefully read the instructions and examined the product; making sure I knew exactly how it was to be installed with the overhang cabinet. I didn't like the idea of having it sticking out from the face of the cabinet and over my counter (as instructed), so I installed it set back from the overhang. Took my time, making sure that where I wanted it installed, it would still be able to function (open the cover, lift the handle, and use the accessories) before making any holes. It took me less than 20 minutes - slow and patient - the results were worth it - it's exactly where I want it and works perfectly. My advice is to "pretend" to use it while holding it where you want to install it. BTW I also was able to install this by myself. Thanks for all the reviews - I'm sure it saved me a lot of head ache - slow and steady and recheck, recheck, recheck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Can Opener, May 30, 2009

This is an excellent product, and as the other review states, when installed it "just disappears." Ours replaced the old white B&D SpaceSaver can opener we purchased back in the early 90's. This one looks to last as long. One correction: the actual product dimensions are: 7 1/2" W x 5" H x 6 7/8" D. The other dimensions that are repeatedly shown are the dimensions of the BOX it comes in.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product!, October 16, 2009

I love this can opener. It was a little tricky to install due to my cabinet overhang, but, using all of the provided spacers, I was able to install it without too much difficulty. I've read other reviews that complained about the cover not opening up all the way and not being able to receive large cans. The cover DOES open up all the way, but it is a little stiff at first. Gently force it down and it will open all the way to receive the largest can sizes. Love the bottle opener and bag opener too. I especially enjoy the clean, sleek look of this can opener. It is even better than my older, spacemaker B&D can opener.

We had a B/D electric can opener for 14 years or more and when we got a new black counter top and back splash the white one had to go. When we got the new black B/D can opener and installed it under the cabinet it just disappears! It works very well and is quiet. I am quite confident that this new opener will last as long as the old one.

I found that this can opener is very good and almost opens the cans without even trying to place the can in the right place. I have to say the one I had before makes any new one great. it was Black and Decker also

2.0 out of 5 stars Too bulky & noisy, September 17, 2010

I've had a B&D spacesaver can opener for almost 10 years before it finally gave out. We replaced it with this newer model & I hate it. It works, and it doesn't take up counter space, but it's bulky and unattractive in person. The lid that opens & closes sometimes stays closed. You have to slam it shut, but when doing that you risk pushing a little too hard & then it thinks you're releasing it & it opens again. Rinse & repeat. When running, it's noisy as heck. I mean, can openers are noisy, but this one sounds like a trash compactor. My old model had a magnet on it to hold the lid after it's cut off, this one doesn't & I guess it's not needed because the machine doesn't actually cut the lid all the way off. It's a choppy, jagged cut & it never cuts cleanly around the lid. We usually have to bend the lid back, actually folding it, to open the can enough to empty the contents. I'm sorry to say this was a very disappointing purchase. :(

this product replaced an under the counter can opener that drove my husband nuts. It came apart every time he used it. He loves this one. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works great...., March 18, 2010

Works great and no problems other than the mounting process. I bought this along with the spacemaker toaster oven and the coffee maker. These two were easy to mount, but the can opener doesn't really mount well on cabinets with anything more than a 1/2" thickness of the front overhang. Mine were about 5/8", which made it that the front screws that drill up into the bottom of the cabinets were right up against the overhang. I couldn't get it any closer and it just barely allows the can opener cover to open.

Other than that, it works great and I opened my first bottle of Sam Adams on it last night!

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't take up counter space, not an eyesore, September 28, 2009

This review is from: Black & Decker CO100B Spacemaker Traditional Multi-Purpose Can Opener, Black (Kitchen)
Cons: Difficult to install, face plate doesn't appear to be able to take a beating...
Pros: Tucks nicely out of site, doesn't take up counter space **Most important** Because the face plate opens and closes, the blade isn't at eye level with all of the previous dried on food remnants from cans opened 6 months ago by my teenagers. That being said, I can anticipate that this face plate might be an easy target for breakage.

1.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't mount if your face frame is thicker than 1/2", February 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker CO100B Spacemaker Traditional Multi-Purpose Can Opener, Black (Kitchen)
The front mounting holes are too far forward. If your face frame is made with the most common material... a 1x2 nominal board, that means that your face frame is 3/4" thick. What's really bizarre about it is that I installed the SpaceMaker toaster oven last night and it was designed to accomodate my cabinets.

I could probably figure out a way to rig this up, but I'm not about to Frankenstein my cabinets and possibly destroy the face frame just so I can mount a can opener. I prefer the manual kind. I was getting this for my wife who strongly prefers electric. I figured getting something else off the counter was a good idea.

I ordered both this and the toaster oven at the same time. If I had tried installing this first, they both would've gone back. I bought them because they matched. I could've just got a standard on-the-counter toaster oven for 1/2 the price, but I'm too stubborn (plus I have 4 holes in my cabinet) to take down the toaster oven and return that too. I hope Amazon doesn't make me eat the return shipping cost. The description of this product is not sufficient based on all the people here that have experienced installation problems.

For what it's worth, I'm very handy. I'm not a master carpenter, but I woodworking is a big hobby for me. In other words, I don't believe the problem is me... it's the product.
