5.0 out of 5 stars Spacemaker Can Opener Review
This is the third or fourth under the cabinet Black & Decker can opener we have purchased and installed and is probably the best of all. It is easy for my wife to operate, the cutter attachment removes easily for cleaning and reinstalls easily. We hope they continue to make this model.

I totally agree with the previous reviewer, this opener has no power and even sounds like it's agonizing over the chore of opening the lid. 1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money - AVOID, May 10, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker CO85 Spacemaker Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
I totally agree with the previous reviewer, this opener has no power and even sounds like it's agonizing over the chore of opening the lid. It is definitely hard to get a can started since the cutting edge will not lift up enough to be able to hook the can edge into it, and forget about even trying to see the blade while doing said placement!

After only a week's use, it stalled numerous times while trying to open a large tuna can size. The can gets jammed and the motor continues to whine, and it took herculean effort to get the can back out of its grip. I had to unplug it several times to keep it from burning out its motor while I tried to free the can.

I cannot believe the poor design and jamming problems from the B & D namesake, much less the highly touted Spacemaker line of appliances over the years. It's definitely back to a Proctor Silex like I had before and this piece of junk is outta here!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not very effective, March 21, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker CO85 Spacemaker Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
I replaced a 10 year old undercounter with this one. The wheel is small and uses a fixed cutter instead of a rotating one. As result cuts are slow, jagged, and often stalls the motor. Very hard to get a can started. Its going in the trash

1.0 out of 5 stars Caution: Poor Mounting Design Won't Work on Some Cabinets, November 10, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker CO85 Spacemaker Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
We had a 10-year-old Spacemaker Can Opener that we liked. It died recently, and we purchased this model at the large superstore near our home. I am a handyman (we built our own home) and this new model will NOT mount properly on European-style kitchen cabinets (with a full-overlay door)! I could make a shim to mount it perhaps 3" below the cabinet, but that would be ridiculous. The mounting for this uses four screws through the base of the cabinet, but there are two front screws within 1/2" of the front of the unit. And the lever swings up 1" ABOVE the top of the unit to insert a can. So the front two mounting screws would need to be mounted into the bottom edge of the cabinet door, or the can opener cannot be used! The printed installation instructions do point out to be sure that the can opener is mounted close enough to the front of the cabinet so that the lever will clear the front of the door. But in doing this, the front two screws cannot be used. So it is going back to the store. What is wrong with B&D Engineering?

5.0 out of 5 stars Black and Decker Spacemaker Can Opener, February 3, 2009
This review is from: Black & Decker CO85 Spacemaker Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
I have had a similar can opener previously that finally bit the dust. My kids actually bought the same brand but a different model which closed up to hide the can opener. That would not have worked with our space so I had them return it and I purchased this one. I am very happy with the size and operation of this one. Would buy a Black and Decker brand again.

We had difficulty finding a replacement until I located this can opener on Amazon. It's great not to have to drill additional holes in the cabinet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of Junk, December 3, 2008
This review is from: Black & Decker CO85 Spacemaker Can Opener, White (Kitchen)
After using this thing for at least a year, I am getting ready to remove it and throw it away. It simply won't open cans. It is very hard to get it started, and once started even harder to keep it going to completely cut the lid. Also, cans with lots of liquid in them will have juices strewn everywhere while it attempts to cut the lids. What a mess! I had an old GE Spacemaker years ago that worked like a dream, but this "Spacemaker" is no relative or close kin. It was extremely frustrating at Thanksgiving trying to open many cans. I'll be going back to a regular countertop model, unfortunately, before Christmas.

I absolutely hate this can opener that fits under the cabinet.. It does not open smoothly. The cans keep falling down when it is rotating. Black and Decker did not meet my expectation with this one.
