Black and Decker Spacemaker Can Opener,

We really like this can opener. We have always had the Black and Decker Spacemakers and never had any problems with them. I have seen many negative reviews on this can opener, and it is not the machine. It is the impatient Operators of this device. If you take your time, and match the can up to the cutter, hold the bottom of the can with your left hand finger of choice while it is opening the can, it will be a complete opening success for you. No matter HOW Large or Small the can is. I love the feature of this one's door. It opens partially for opening a small can or all the way down for big can's. The appearance is what we wanted too. It matches our Stainless appliances with the black combo. Easy to clean. Just be a little patient and match up the top of the can with the opener. Thats all you have to do. The lids do become Jagged as in the descripts of the negative Feedback, but Hubby and I have come to the resolve that it is the type of aluminum used to manufacture the can. Not the Black and Decker Openers fault. Some cans open nice and clean. Others, Jagged as described. It is going into the trash anyway, unless you decorate the walls with them.

Why did they stop making under the counter can openers that actually work! I purchased this one when my old one died and it's being shipped back for a refund.
Don't buy this if you want to open a tall can. The door will open but it does not go down flat but stuck out at an angle so you can only get short cans in. If you will notice in the description, it does not state that it will open any size cans. I'm not interested in a bag cutter, etc.....I wanted a can opener that worked. They really messed up on this one big time.

I agree with the other reviewers about the mounting design on this can opener, the front screw openings need to be moved back about an inch. The first time we installed it, the lever wouldn't open all the way. I was able to open a can, but I knew it was going to bother me that I couldn't fully lift the lever. There were two problems. The can opener needed to be moved forward (although with the cabinet overhang that wasn't going to be enough), and it need to be lower. So we moved the holes forward as much as possible and bought additional spacers. The lever opens completely now. The can opener is kind of large, but at least it's not sitting on the counter. Concerning the cover, at first I thought it wouldn't open all the way, but then I played with it a little and it opened completely out of the way to accomodate large cans.

Horrible,
This review is from: Black & Decker CO95 Spacemaker Can Opener (Kitchen)
We had the previous model of the B&D SpaceSaver can opener and it was awesome. We were remodeling our kitchen and the old one didn't go with the new decor so we bought a new one - what a terrible, terrible mistake. It is a rare event when this can opener actually opens a can on the first try. Most of the time, the can falls out even when being held up from the bottom - it's like the can opener actually pushes against the can rather than holding onto it. I am the only one who can manage to get this thing to open a can because I'm strong enough to hold the can onto the cutter. No one else in the family even bothers with it anymore. It is a total piece of junk - if we still had our old one, I would put it back in even though it doesn't match the rest of the kitchen.

After killing what was left of my last under the counter can opener, it was a real trooper for several years, I researched several items to take its place. I found the Balck & Decker CO95 Black & Decker CO95 Spacemaker Can Opener, in black, and it looked like it was exactly what I was looking for. After receiving the item in a very short time, thank you Amazon for that expedient shipping, I spent about twenty minutes installing it. The supplied cutout worked perfectly and made installation a breeze. The can opener has worked like a champ ever since it was installed. One thing that scared me was that the fold down cover was pretty sturdy and I thought it wouldn't drop completely down (180 degrees). I finally pulled down a little harder and it did come down the full 180 degrees. That was my stupidity! But, in the end, this was a great purchase and I am glad that I bought it.

I loved it until it broke a year and a half later!,

Ok so it has it's down falls. First it took some rigging to make it work. They designed it so you can't mound it up close to the cabinet face frames. You have to rig it up by cutting some of the washers. When I first installed it I couldn't get the door to work properly. Then I loved it. I don't open to many large can goods but I can't remember having a problem with any can big or small. I would most likely give this thing a 4 star review if it wasn't for my recent experience. Last night a year and a half later the clipping mechanism that holds the door shut broke. It's understandable seeing it is plastic. I'm just really mad that I can't order a replacement part. This is one of the most used parts of the can opener, and they make it plastic, then don't give you an option to buy a replacement part. Obviously Black and Decker isn't a Green Company, with me being forced to throw a perfectly fine can opener in the garbage just because of one little piece of plastic that probably cost no more than 10 cents to replace. I'm really disappointed on this one!

This one works as well as the old one that died after 19 years! Mounts easy and I like the cover, which was not on the old one.

I searched everywhere to find an under the counter can opener and I was able to get this one from another retailer. I decided to review it here because this was the first place I read about it--but I'm in Canada.
Here are the pros: The can opener is sleek and small, not as large as the pic may suggest. It installed in about 20 minutes, and with no problems. The front lid opens with a light push of one finger and swings down to accept small cans. For larger ones, a gentle push opens the access panel further (180 degrees). You can open any size can. The cord hides inside the back, so it's not drooping down onto the counter. It has a knife sharpener on the side, a bottle opener under front and a bag opener on front side. It operates smoothly, and the lid stays in place on the magnetic head when opened. It cuts entire lid off and though it's ragged, it works fine. Cons: It's a bit loud. But then, who cares? It's not like I'm opening up dozens of cans for hours on end. All in all, I'd recommend this product to anyone. The trick is finding it and for Canadians, finding a retailer that will ship to Canada.

Hard install with 3/4 faceframe cabinets,

Like a lot of other people I bought this as a replacement for our old Spacemaker can opener which was at least ten years old I think. The old one broke the actuator slider - which I have since dismantled and epoxied in case the new one turns out to be junk.
I gave it two stars overall on the basis I haven't actually tried opening anything yet. Three will be the highest I go, regardless. The old one was a 4 or 5. Good points? Well, it looks okay. Bad points? Has a lightweight, cheap feel to it right out of the box. Am I surprised? No, not really. B&D just falls in line behind a lot of other manufacturers foisting off cheap, inferior, Chinese-made replacements for hardworking old appliances. Warning if you have 3/4" overhang on your cabinets: We have oak faceframe cabinets with 3/4" overhang and 3/4" depth of overhang under cabinets. The template and instructions for installing with an overhang address 1/4 and 1/2" overhangs; nothing larger. I managed to make it fit, but had to guess at location. Ended up having to re-drill holes because what I initially thought was a good location ended up making it impossible to remove the cutter head. Oh, and of course the hole pattern is not the same as the old unit. As someone else mentioned in another review, unlike the old Spacemakers, this one does not have a simple release whereby the cutter can be pulled straight out. Instead you have to rotate the entire cutter head and handle about 90 degrees straight up and then pull out. This means it has to be mounted far enough forward and down to clear any overhang which is impossible to do with supplied spacers. I had to cut up the old spacers to add length of about 1/4". Luckily the longest bolts supplied managed to reach, but the unit sits much lower than I really wanted, so low infact that you can clearly see the spacers between the bottom of the faceframe and the top of the opener. Plus you have to open the cabinet to make clearance to remove the cutter. All in all it will take me a lot to buy another B&D product, at least not without first seeing it. In the case of this can opener it is only available by special order; WalMart, Target, Kmart, Sears, don't stock it in stores. Perhaps B&D even realizes that if people see it on display they'll buy something else.

The Black & Decker CO95 Can Opener that was sent to me doesn't work. I am trying to get my money back.
My old B&D Space Maker Can Opener lasted at least 10 years & worked fairly well until the motor started going bad. (So we wanted to get a new one.) The new product actually is worse than the old one that died. The motor would strain and couldn't even open a can of tuna. Then you have to struggle to get the can off of the can opener so you can finish opening with a manual can opener. A real mess. Now I know why I couldn't find any of this type of can openers in the local stores. I would have rated this as zero stars, but clicked on oe star to get past that line. 6/09/2011 BW |
