Terrible product,

I've had B&D toaster ovens in the past and they've always held up well, so when it came for a new one I mostly dismissed the negative comments by others and purchsed this model. Well - unfortunately the negatives reviews are correct. Toast made on the bottom shelf ends up burnt where directly above the heating element, and untoasted elsewhere. But far worse was the rude awakening I received on the 2 month anniversary of my purchase. My attempt to toast a bagel appeared more like a 4th of July celebration when the unit completely shorted, providing me with a nice light show. And not that I'd have any inclination to use it again but it's now dead.
I tried to contact the B&D service number provided with the manual and lo and behold the documented late and weekend hours are no longer valid, so I guess I'll now be spending my work day negotiating for a new unit as opposed to someone else's "repaired" unit. If they're this bad when new I can't imagine what a refurb would be like. And I can't imagine what I'll be paying in shipping charges. BE FOREWARNED!

I cant be precisely sure this is my model oven but it looks identical and does have the pizza bump. I purchased mine at target on sale, same price range late dec 08.
UPDATE: We did have to return this oven its problems just kept increasing. We now own a 30 dollar w/m big box store hamilton beech with a pizza bump, no quirks works fine. I love my oven but it does have a few quirks... pros: mine (4400b) is non stick interior, pizza bump for up to a 12" Pizza (4400b), fits nicely in small area but can fit large cooking, Can use timer to turn unit off or set to stay on, doesnt heat up my counter like its going to burn the cabiinets off the walls, convection cooks nicely especially on cookies and baked goods, I like the divited handle like things near bottom makes it easy to move since most dont come w/ handles anymore cons: Its thermostat is not consistant from unit to unit, mine is off by forty or fifty degrees -. I set it accordingly and since it broils nice and hot (temped at over 500) Im fine w/ it as long as it keeps working. But it does add cooking time. We purchased a second one before our returns period is going to be up to verify the temp thing wasnt an error that could be corrected w/ an exchange but the newest one got returned and old one kept. The newest one had a rack or rack holders that didnt fit, the rack would fall down in back of oven on burner, maybe just defective and I noticed the bottom front burner didnt get as orange hot as the other three. The temp however ran about fifty degrees higher then it said on dial ! So clearly there is quality control issues w/ consistancy of units. Just be aware. Id be prepared for exchange but Im hearing most things are made this way now. I do like the oven a lot honestly I dont want to return it so I hope it continues to work fine w/ the adjustment for temp setting. So many of the toaster ovens got bad reviews it was sort of a spin of the wheel anyway. Plus I needed a unit large enough to bake a small chicken or regular size pie but not huge like so many are now as we live in a small space. The b and d unit meets those needs. They do make smaller units w/ out bumps so this one was a nice in between size. Id say try it but be prepared for exchange if needed, we are still on the originally purchased unit so for us its working out.

Do I have the same oven?,
This review is from: Black & Decker CTO4400B Perfect Broil Large-Capacity Countertop Convection Oven (Kitchen)
I have the Black and Decker Perfect Broil Convection Countertop Oven...at least I think I do!These reviews are unbelieveable. I have had my unit for a little over a year and I LOVE it. I have not had any of the problems seen in the reviews and I use my unit nearly everyday! I bake meatloaf, cornish hens (two at the time) bake cookies, and biscuits. The ONLY problem I have had is that the numbers on the timer dial are worn off from so much use.
I just today was recommending the oven to someone. I hope I haven't lead them astray.

horrible, horrible toaster oven,
This review is from: Black & Decker CTO4400B Perfect Broil Large-Capacity Countertop Convection Oven (Kitchen)
This toaster oven is the worst and the company behind it should be ashamed of itself. If I could give it zero stars, I would.
The piece of crap shorted out completely after 3 months of use and because we don't have the receipt, the company refuses to help us out. The damn thing nearly started a fire in my kitchen when it shorted out!!! The sides of the toaster get WAY too hot. my wife has scars on her forearms from where she got 3rd degree burns from brushing up against the sides of the toaster. The door doesn't close all the way so you have to push it closed. When the convection fan is running, it sounds like a Cesna plane waiting to take off. All in all this is the worst toasted oven EVER made and the fact that black & decker is hiding behind some legal shield is horrible. NEVER AGAIN!!!

the door shattered,

I would add more to the other things written here. Less than 3 months after this was purchased, while in use, the door spontaneously shattered into tiny pieces. Every last bit of the glass door was completely shattered. Thank God I was not in the kitchen when this happened- I don't know but I think injury is possible.
My toaster oven also came with a messed up temperature dial what said "low" was actually "off" and what said "off" was actually "high". Stay away from this one- far away!

Appeared to be a nice toaster oven. I bought it because of the Black & Decker reputation.
The main door stays open about 1/4". In addition, the sides get very hot. Not such a great deal and a lot poorer quality than earlier black and decker products..

We've had this oven for about a year and the timer switch shorted out and stopped working. I recommend moving on to a different model

I've owned my oven for 11 months now, and I love the countertop convience, and when the weather is hot outside it doesn't heat up my kitchen like my oven in my stove. I have also broiled meat and baked pies in it, and it serves me very well. I bake cornbread,& rolls and etc. It's just a nice extra to have in my kitchen.

Had another B&D toaster oven for many years. Recently, the top coils stopped working and it was time to invest in another unit. This model had the same essential features as the old unit and added a convection fan, plus it had a 60 minute timer rather than the 30 minute timer on the old unit. It also had a "keep warm" position on the function knob. Price was comparable.
Unlike many of the other posts, I find that this unit toasts very well and evenly. I think that many of the users whose posts were less than favorable did not read their instruction booklet or did not follow the instructions. Also, there are 4 positions for the rack (two slots in the oven and you can flip the rack over to change its height). I can see where toast might be unevenly cooked if the rack is not positioned correctly. Again, not the fault of the unit, but the user. I cannot comment on the longevity of the unit as it is relatively new, but the old one lasted around 6 years and was used nearly every day... This unit, while occupying the same space on the countertop can handle a 12" pizza while the old unit was configured for a 9" pizza. We tried it out and the pizza came out very well. The convection fan which comes on automatically and cannot be turned off evens out the heat somewhat and probably knocks a few minutes off the cooking time. The old metal broiling tray was more substantial than the flimsy aluminum new one...and was actually slightly larger than the new one...so I kept it. All in all, I think this is a wonderful, inexpensive and useful kitchen appliance. |
