Black and Decker Digital Evolution 5000 steam iron,
By WSU fan "Colleen" (Idaho, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black & Decker D5000 Digital Evolution Iron, White (Kitchen)
I am embarrassed to say how many irons I have been through in the past two years...and the frustration. I had used a cordless Panasonic for years and it had been a great iron until it died.
Then the quest began. I first started with a lower end Black and Decker Digital Advantage iron, and initially was happy with it. After using it for several months, I had water boiling out of the steam vents, it would spit leaving water spots, and it was impossible to clean it from the inside out, even following directions. I gave up on that one, and then purchased a lower end Rowenta. Not as much spitting, but it didn't get very hot. I then moved onto a Sunbeam that I initially was impressed with...then the water started leaking out of spray nozzle hole! I was looking for the Black and Decker Digital 2030 per all of the recommendations from Amazon. I couldn't find one in town at all, and being the impatient sort, I purchased this instead. Obviously this is something that is brand new! So far so good! It heats up incredibly fast, and doesn't feel heavy at all to me. I do like the swivel cord on this versus the store the cord in the base. I just have noticed that those stop working after a while. It beeps when you are ready to use it, and the digital readout is very easy to see. I may have preferred the one with the Ceramic glide sole plate. We shall see. Pros: Heats up incredibly fast! While ironing, I have to keep my fingers far away so they don't get scorched from the steam coming out! (I am using distilled water because I am no longer following manufacturer's directions saying to use tap water because my water is incredibly hard.) Digital readout is large and easy to see. Doesn't feel heavy to me, even when full. Swivel cord, and the base rest is rubber covered so it grips your ironing board surface. I really like that! So far, it just glides right over my fabric. I will be using this a lot because of my sewing, so it will be interesting to see if it still feels this way after a few months of use. Cons: With the "MAX" mark on opaque for the tank, its hard to see, and easy to overfill if you aren't careful. I think the water container that comes with it fills it to the exact spot you need. The plastic cover "flap" for the tank has a bit of flimsy feel to it. It should be fine as long as one doesn't manhandle it. You do have to push the buttons firmly on the iron to get it to turn on and off. Overall, I am very, very pleased with this iron. If this model can keep up with the Digital Advantage 2030, I will be pleased as punch. I will update this review in a few months to see if I am still happy with it. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

EXCELLENT IRON,

I was given a high-priced Rowenta Duo Pro as a gift, and it was horrible. I did my research and this Black & Decker was well rated so I coughed up the cash and bought this one for myself. This is a great product, and everything the Rowenta is not.
1. The controls are easy to use, and the steam on/off switch is a nice perk. 2. The digital display is easy to read and results in accurate heat for different fabrics (unlike the Rowenta which was too cool at all settings except when turned all the way on). 3. The steam is a fine mist, not drippy (like the Rowenta). 4. The auto-off feature does not engage too quickly (30 seconds if left down and 8 minutes standing, instead of the random and frequent shut downs of the Rowenta), and is easy to override with the press of a button (instead of dangerous and leaky motion detector tilting and unplugging/plugging back in required by the Rowenta). 5. Finally, it sounds silly, but the comfortable grip and ceramic sole plate just make ironing easier--I didn't realize how hard I had to push on the Rowenta and how the awkward grip took a toll on my wrist until I got the Black & Decker. There is a similar Black & Decker iron that costs a little less, but the grip is not a comfortable and it has a stainless steel plate that just doesn't glide like the ceramic. Pay the extra $10 and get this one--it's well worth it!

light and easy iron,

I had been using a very popular brand iron for the last few years and wasn't happy with it. I had previously owned another Black and Decker iron so after much research I went back to B & D! This is by far the best iron out there. Light and easy to use. I highly recommend it.

This iron works great! I had the base model but it started to drip after two years. This one says "no drip" so I am hoping that is the case. It heats up fast, easy to use, swivel cord helpful, very light and it gets the wrinkles out on the first go over. Those are the pro's. The two con's are that you have to fill this iron while it is horizontal. You have to stand the iron back up to see how full the tank is. Minor inconvenience. Also, the cover to the water tank is flimsy plastic. Shouldn't be a problem if I don't mess with it alot.

My B&D D5000 just died. I have had this iron only two years. The alarm sounded and the digital read out was flashing, so I unplugged it. Then I smelled an electrical burn odor, like another reviewer mentioned. Up until now, it was a great iron, but now I need to borrow one to finish my sewing project. (Doesn't it always happen when you are down to crunch time?) It will be difficult for me to buy another B&D iron even though I had previously used a B&D F520 for about twenty years.

Having now had 3 Rowenta irons which developed leaks I was trying to find an iron that had the features I liked in the Rowenta's but without the leaking. The Black and Decker seems brilliant. Bear in mind that I have only had it for a just over a month, but I love it. (Does one really love an iron?) It certainly makes light of the ironing and does a better job than the R did. Cant fault it.

Sorry I bought it,

I bought this iron about 3 weeks ago, and I am so sorry I bought it. I had to decide between this and a Rowenta and selected the B&D because it weighed less. I should have known not to buy anything made in China (the Rowenta was made in Germany)but I was really concerned about the weight. However, the third time I used the iron it spit water spots on the garments. This a major flaw. I cannot recommend this iron. Note: My instruction booklet is for D5000 and D5500. I see no difference in the irons.
