3.0 out of 5 stars The caraff is the only redeeming feature
This could have been an EXCELLENT coffee maker, but it was poorly engineered. If you don't put in the caraff in JUST RIGHT, it leaks. That's how the first one was damaged by my mother-in-law. Took it back for a replacement. Now I'm replacing it a second time because it's leaking internally when it sucks up the water from the resevoir to be brewed. Yes, I agree -- the beep...

Some coffee makers just don't brew the coffee hot enough. This model has ADJUSTABLE HEAT SETTINGS. I think the hottest setting would be the most universal but that depends on individual preference.

The AUTOMATIC OFF safty feature - adjustable from 1 - 4 hours -is very nice if you have one VERY early riser in the household. The quality of the brew holds up well in our opinion.

The capacity gauge on the outside is clearly visible & the reservoir is easy to fill without spillage. The coffee basket lifts out easily & there is no fumbling to replace it.

Two unusual advantages are the DARK BROWN basket that holds the coffee and the PLASTIC POURING SPOUT. Face it - no matter how careful you are, coffee WILL stain - at least this way you don't have to look at it! The plastic spout is something I haven't seen before - part of the plastic 'collar/handle' unit. This is especially practical because it's easy to break the glass spouts on coffee makers when rinsing them.

The AUTOMATIC PROGRAMMING feature will be important to many users. Lastly - the unit makes a fine cup of coffee, which I think depends more on the type of coffee used than the pot itself anyway. The unit is new but so far I have no negative comments to make. We're very happy with it.

For an inexpensive coffee maker, the Smart Brew has plenty of nice features. You can tell it how long to keep your coffee warm, and even at what temperature. The one thing you can't tell it to do, however, is shut up.

At a decibel level normally reserved in the world of household appliances for alarm clocks and smoke detectors, the Smart Brew announces your coffee has finished brewing with four of what the ad copy humorously understates as "beeps" but I prefer to call "ear-splitting banshee wails." One or more hours later, depending on your setting of choice, it "beeps" again to tell you your coffee will no longer be kept warm.

If you are an electrical engineer and can disable this feature, you will enjoy the otherwise faultless operation of the Black & Decker Smart Brew. The rest of us will just have to take care not to spill our coffee when the next helpful "beep" scares us half to death.

I have no idea what the beep or alarm is everyone is talking about. I bought one of these BEFORE I read the reviews and was scared of what I'd get when the coffe maker arrived. I was pleased that there was no "alarm or beep" to notify me that the coffee was ready. Maybe they removed that feature after seeing the complaints, because mine is as quite as a mouse. It works great but the ONLY thing that I would change about it is the lid on the carafe. It is not removable, therefore making it almost impossible to put in the dishwasher. I guess you could alway rinse in under the sink. But all in all, I'd recommond it.

4.0 out of 5 stars BEEEEEEEP!!!, January 4, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker DCM2700GVA 12-Cup Smart Brew Coffeemaker with Bonus Coffee Grinder (Kitchen)
"When the brewing is done you will hear a series of beeps". This understatement is taken directly from the product manual. Unfortunately the "series of beeps" is so loud, distant neighbors know when your coffee is done!

This is nice coffee maker however it is way too loud and you can not disable the end of brewing alarm system. We are buying a different coffee maker that does not make noise. If you have family members that would like to remain asleep after you are done brewing coffee...do not buy this product. If you want a little SHOCK & AWE with your morning coffee then this is the product for you!

Yes, I agree -- the beep is too freaking loud. Wakes up the neighbors. It should have been designed with a volume or AT LEAST a feature to turn it off as a menu item. But the caraff is excellent. It DOES NOT drip. Quite amazing. B&D need to redesign this whole coffee maker, but keep the caraff.

This model was excellent, until recently, when the drip stop feature, made of plastic, which warped and made it harder to return the carafe correctly. We began to get backfilling and spillage onto the hotplate, which has now corroded. This was after 4 years of hard usage and fine coffee, even now inspite of the problems. We enjoy having a progammable feature and the water resevoir access lifts up fully to allow pouring into only the resevoir, also we use a gold filter basket in the plastic basket without any leakge of grounds into the brew. We are replacing the old unit with the same model.

I bought the Smart Brew DCM2700B (black) less than 3 months ago and the coffeemaker has stopped working. Will not brew any longer.

The features on this coffeemaker are wonderful but if the appliance does not work for longer than 3 months then what good are the features.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker DCM2700GVA 12-Cup Smart Brew Coffeemaker with Bonus Coffee Grinder (Kitchen)
I bought this same Black and Decker coffee maker at a department store. It worked fine for a few months. I broke the carafe and when I discovered the carafe cost as much as a new maker, I decided to just buy a new coffee maker.
The new one worked for 3 & 1/2 weeks.
I took the old coffee maker and new carafe and set the new one aside.
Today the old one would not heat or perk.
I can not return it because I no longer have the box. ( my fault.)
I certainly shouldn't have to pay postage on a new product less than a month old.

Nevermore, nevermore.

Save your money, this has been no bargain.

Our Smart Brew died yesterday. It won't heat up any longer. We bought it almost a year ago. It was an okay machine -- nothing great, but we've had worse.

Just a short word to voice my praise for this coffee maker. I've used it now for over a week and am very impressed. I reviewed many different coffee makers and found this one to be the best value. I was primarily searching for an ergonomically designed coffee maker with a programmable feature. This set is phenomenal and even comes with a bonus coffee grinder. Great value!
