Black and Decker Shop Radio,
By
This review is from: Black & Decker Digital Worksite Radio With MP3 PLAYER CAPABILITY (Misc.)
I received this radio as a Christmas gift. At first I thought it might be a toy with its gaudy orange case and retro protective rails. I was wrong. This radio is very versatile. First off - it has a large strong rechargeable battery - no more wasting tons of D size batteries. This battery lasts at least 12 hours at 50% volume - much longer at more reasonable sound levels. I have an ipod shuffle that fits into the foam lined slot. I can choose between mp3's - AM - FM radio. You can imagine the mp3's a 60 year old man has :-)
The digital readout is lighted for tuning the radio at night. You simply toggle sources between AM - FM - AUX for playing songs. The tuner also has a search feature - but no pre-selects for special stations. The battery charger coils up and is stored in its own compartment - the mp3 player compartment also has a weathertight door. The orange case - that I thought was gaudy is great for the beach. It is durable and keeps the sand out. It also has rubber legs to keep the radio up off the ground. Also there is a durable protective metal frame and handle. I find it handsome enough to keep it on my desktop - also on my workbench - and out camping or on picnics. It does not have stereo speakers - but does have a base boost - and lots of volume. One of the best things you do not have to worry about is buying batteries. That makes this orange baby green.

AC adapter died.,

For the price I couldn't find anything close to this radio. The built in rechargeable batteries are the best feature - I play no favorites when it comes to power tools, so I didn't want to be stuck with any particular brand's battery for a job radio, plus I didn't need the extra bulk that most of them have. The sound quality is fairly poor - lacking high frequency definition so it sounds pretty muddy. Today or yesterday the AC adapter crapped out (tested with a voltmeter - no output). Bummer. I'm sure I have another one of same voltage and at least the same current output, so I'll be okay, but I'm not sure I have one that will fit into the compartment on the back of the radio. This product loses a star for sound quality and another star for made in China crap.

This is the best rechargable radio for the price. The only fault I could find is when the radio is plugged in to charge the battery, the reception is weak and scratchy. As long as it is charged when not in use, the sound quality, (not stereo), is just fine.

Who Would Have Thought,

This radio is not half bad. I purchased this radio for $25. I was a little nervous based on some of the other reviews on the radio, but it actually does work pretty well.
I have a pool and this allows me to play the radio next to the pool without the fear of getting fried since the radio has a rechargable battery and is not running on electric. It has a single speaker, but it can play loud enough without distorting. The only drawbacks are there are no pre-sets. If we had three so we could get to the low/mid/high number stations quicker that would have been nice or a remote. It has a bass boost which adds some nice sound. The MP3 player works well. I think the rechargable battery feature is the main selling point on this radio. It does last 10-12 hours off a charge playing loudly on 1/2 volume. So you can use it for an entire day at the beach, in the pool, B-B-Q, working in the yard, tailgating, working outside etc. where electric is not available.

The first one the battery did not charge or work at all. The second one the battery worked for a couple months now it will not hold a charge and the has to be pluged in to work. I would buy a better quality of radio. The MP3 hook up is very nice and the sound is good just dont plan on using it on battery power.

I am a reseller of this item and our last shipment had nearly 25% that are non-functional due to a faulty battery. Black and Decker has refused to fix the items. I would stay away from this and similar battery operated Black and Decker products.

great product, long battery life. however, when i purchased the radio on amazon it said "new" (not used) when i received it, it was dirty and had been opened. If my husband didnt love it so much it would have gone back.

As someone stated earlier, B&D must have some kind of patent on rechargeable transistor radios. I think I overpaid for this (about $75), but I love it. The battery life is over 12 hours, and it recharges fast. The sound quality is just fine. My iphone with hard protective case fits in the provided slot, but the door does not close, this is not a problem. It picks up the weak am station that carries the baseball game. Its been a real treat to have out by the pool where there is no access to electricity. I especially like the "roll bar", it makes me laugh.
