1.0 out of 5 stars Poor design. Awful filter. Old models much better, April 10, 2011
This review is from: Black & Decker CHV1408 DustBuster 14.4V Cordless Cyclonic Hand Vac (Kitchen)
Pros: This unit has very strong suction, extendable nose seems useful.

Cons: I'm trying to replace a CHV9600 who's battery has died. Amazed to find that Black and Decker no longer makes good dust busters. They're all cheap, gimmicky and meant to earn them the most money with devices which need frequent replacement.

The filter in the CHV1408 is a joke. If sucking up dust, it will clog within a few minutes. We used our CHV9600 with the pleated VF100 filter for months without ever having to clean it.

The slider to "clean" the filter is a useless joke. Gimmick with no value.

The battery is not replaceable and B&D doesn't list is as a replaceable part even though they list other internal parts.

The dustbuster is advertised to have "triple filtration". Another gimmick. The last filter can't even be accessed, so if it clogs up, you have to buy a new unit. The first filter doesn't count much as a filter, leaving the junk VF08 filter which clogs very quickly.

Once clogged, suction is understandably non-existent.

And some of the prices listed here are outrageous. Its $40 at Sears. But its not worth it anyway.

Sad that B&D has stopped making decent Dust Busters and is instead trying to gouge consumers. Their strategy seems to be working too. Haven't found a competing handheld vacuum thats decent either.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wrong Item, October 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker CHV1408 DustBuster 14.4V Cordless Cyclonic Hand Vac (Kitchen)
The item I received was not the item I ordered. This is the second time this happened with the same item. I ordered the Black & Decker CHV1408 Dustbuster and received the CHV 1410. This is very disappointing and is not a criticism of the product as much as the service.

Okay, it's a little hard to resist trying to be silly with the title, but truly this hand-vac has been a disappointment. It does not pick up well at all. I bought it to vacuum up toddler messes, and I get much more with my hand than I do with the vacuum. It has really poor suction and has had since we bought it. I was very disappointed in this product. I had thought a brand-name "DustBuster" would be great, but this has not been good at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the older 7.2v model DB700 Type 1, April 26, 2010

This review is from: Black & Decker CHV1408 DustBuster 14.4V Cordless Cyclonic Hand Vac (Kitchen)
I received the B&D vac model CHV1408 as a Christmas present. It was intended to replace the DB 700, with the two rechargeable batteries, that I have used for years. Since it was a present, I had to put the new one in service right away. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed with its performance. First, ir's heavier that the older model. Second, it just doesn't have the pick-up power of the old model. Now, after trying to use the CHV1408 for several months, I'm taking it out of service and restoring the older DB700 to "preferred mini-vac status".

Another point to consider is that the battery in the CHV1408 is not replaced easily where with the older model, it takes a pair of 3.6v VersaPak batteries that are readily available and easily replaced.

My suggestion - save your money. Don't buy the model CHV1408.
