5.0 out of 5 stars Clever design, works well
Very pleasing design, this can opener has a rounded, attractive appearance when tucked under your cabinets. As I see it, it has two main benefits:

1) As it hangs under your kitchen cabinet, it frees up space on your counters, leaving room for other appliances.

2) Because it is off the counter, you can open any size can with it. I really like this, because I often cook...

3.0 out of 5 stars Room for improvement
This small under cabinet can opener works reasonably well and its bland design won't offend in most kitchens.

However, it's not without its share of flaws.

First, it has a built-in clock and timer powered by a little watch battery. That's another device to set twice a year when we adjust for daylight savings time, and I could do without the hassle...

I really like this, because I often cook in bulk and need to open BIG cans--my old can opener did not have enough room between the counter and the top of the can opener to place large cans.

The can opener is also easy to clean, as the blade is in an assembly that easily slides out for cleaning.

The clock and timer aren't of much use to me as every darn appliance in my kitchen already has a clock.

One caveat: the installation instructions have you place the can opener far too much to the front of the cabinet so that it actually sticks out from the cabinet. If I had it to do over again, I would move it back under the cabinet.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, one minor flaw, November 30, 2002

Love the way it stays out of the way and off my counter. The only problem I have had with it is that it is sometimes hard to close and the can holder doesn't pop out when it opens.

This small under cabinet can opener works reasonably well and its bland design won't offend in most kitchens.

However, it's not without its share of flaws.

First, it has a built-in clock and timer powered by a little watch battery. That's another device to set twice a year when we adjust for daylight savings time, and I could do without the hassle. The cheap-looking, hard to read LCD display is more an eyesore than a useful feature. Why would B&D choose to use a watch battery when there's ample room for a AA? I don't understand why they would bother adding a feature so poorly implemented. The product would clearly be better off without it.

Then, there's a design issue with the cover. Even when you push it all the way back, it's probably going to catch some of the spillage from your freshly opened cans.

Finally, the worst problem I have with it is that it's hard to set the cans in place, and you can't open Costco-size cans unless you hold them through the entire process. Since being able to deal with large size cans is one of the benefits of under-cabinet openers, you should be aware that it just doesn't do such a great job at it.

Then again, it's not too ugly, not too noisy, not too expensive, and it does open cans without too much fuss. Just don't expect the Rolls-Royce of under-cabinet can openers...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Black & Decker's best effort, February 16, 2006

As another reviewer wrote, there is much room for improvement with this item. I've had it for about two years now, and for sure don't pay more than $10 for it if you have to have it, which is my way of saying if I had to do this over again, I wouldn't purchase it. The best features are the clock (although it is hard to set and reset) and the convenience of having an opener immediately available. That said, the can opener is not easy to use, which is a detraction. In addition, almost always there is spillage from opened items due to the design. The saving grace here is that the cutting piece can be removed and put in the dishwasher. However, plan to be cleaning up the rest of the appliance and the counter below on a regular basis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great can opener, highly recommended, August 7, 2007

I have had this can opener for over a year and it works great. It has really held up, and the built in timer and clock separate it from its competition. The ability to close it so that it is not in the way is nice as well. I recommend this item.
