Product Description

Amazon.com Review

When considering a new lawn mower, it's important to look for a model that has the power to get the job done without sacrificing maneuverability. With a 4-horsepower gas equivalent at peak torque and an extremely easy-to-move body, the MM600 from Black & Decker combines the best of both worlds. Weighing in at a mere 40 pounds, this mower feels light as air compared to older, gas-powered machines. In addition, added maneuverability is provided by the mower's unique handle, which can be completely reversed with one pull of a lever, allowing you to use this mower in either direction. Its 18-inch rustproof polymer deck is small enough to be squeezed into tight spots and has a profile low enough to fit under shrubs or bushes. The MM600 offers three options for your grass--mulching, side discharge, or collection in a side bag, which is sold separately.

Starting this mower is literally as easy as plugging it in and pulling down the ignition lever--no more exhausting tugging and yanking on a stubborn starter cord. Once running, the quietness of this mower will astound those used to the noisy rumble of a gas motor. Another innovation is the method by which the mower is raised and lowered. Where once it was necessary to adjust each wheel individually, the height of the mowing platform is now controlled by a single squeeze of a single lever and is adjustable from 3/4 of an inch to 2-3/4 inches.

The only disadvantage this machine seems to have is in the power department. While there were no serious problems during our field test, thicker sections of grass did bog the blade down slightly, and it was necessary to slow down or go back over these areas in order to make a completely clean cut. The only other drawback to this mower is the presence of a power cord. While the mower handle does include a hook to help keep the cord out of the way, and the reversible handle is also helpful, some planning, practice, and care are required to avoid mowing your power source.

A 30-day no-risk satisfaction guarantee and full manufacturer's two-year warranty are included.

From the Manufacturer

The 4.0 hp* Electric Mulching Mower (MM600) offers an 18-inch-diameter cutting path and a tough lightweight rust-proof polymer deck with cutting heights from 3/4 to 2-3/4 inches. This lawn mower is very quiet, effortless to start, and requires no gas, oil or tune-ups. A one-touch, spring loaded, four-position height adjustment raises and lowers the mower with a touch of a lever. As a three in one mower, it mulches, rear bags and side discharges (side discharge chute sold separately) Mulching plate comes as standard equipment. A flip over handle eases cord control to avoid hang-ups. Weighs 40 pounds and produces 1200 maximum watt output. The mower provides all the performance and environmental benefits of Black & Decker's electric lawn mowers. Side bag is sold separately. The polymer deck has a five year warranty. 30 day no-risk satisfaction guarantee and full two-year warranty. *hp ratings equivalent to gas engine at peak torque.

3.0 out of 5 stars Safety On/Off Switch Has Failed Twice, July 26, 2006
By
This review is from: Black & Decker 4 HP Electric Mulching Lawn Mower MM600 (Lawn & Patio)
After two and a half mowing seasons, I find myself reasonably satisfied with my MM600, with one glaring exception. First, the good:

The mower is lightweight, adequately powered for my needs, and admirably easy to adjust for mowing height. I'm especially impressed with the plastic body; I had thought it might be a potential problem area, but it has given no trouble whatever in use and it cannot rust. However, all is not sunshine and roses with this machine, because of its safety on/off switch.

The switch (buried in a housing located on the mower's handle) is activated by a lever that one must pull up and hold against the mower handle while operating the machine. If you let go of the lever, the switch shuts off the mower. So far, so good- I'm all for safety. Unfortunately, the switch seems to be short-lived and prone to failure; I'm on my third one already. Worse, the most recent failure caused the switch to catch fire- flames shot out of the switch housing only inches from my hand. Rather obviously, I'm not happy about that, and I'm not happy that an otherwise exemplary mower has cost around $30 in multiple repairs to the same component.

For the moment, I'm keeping a spare switch on hand (and an eye out for more smoke or flames), but when this mower needs replacing, I'll be looking for something with a much more robust safety switch design. It's too bad; this mower is otherwise one of the best I've ever owned or used.

Sightly underpowered, and the flip hand gets stuck when the clippings build up in the pivots, but this is the easiest mower I've ever handled. Now if I could find replacement parts.....
