5.0 out of 5 stars Just like Mom's
I bought this Classic Black & Decker Iron for my elderly mother a couple of months ago. It is almost exactly like her old black iron I remember from my childhood. The steam button on her old iron was red. This one is an orange color, but other than that, it pretty much looks like her old iron.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Iron But Avoid if You Have Hard Water
I love this iron because it is heavy and it gets really, really hot. It takes out every wrinkle. The handle is comfortable to hold. After using it for a couple of years, the plate started pitting and I believe it is because I have hard water. The little holes have clogged up. It then started to "snag" delicate fabrics and I ruined some brand new curtains I was...

5.0 out of 5 stars Just like Mom's, June 27, 2004

I bought this Classic Black & Decker Iron for my elderly mother a couple of months ago. It is almost exactly like her old black iron I remember from my childhood. The steam button on her old iron was red. This one is an orange color, but other than that, it pretty much looks like her old iron.

This iron also performs like Mom's old iron. The first time she used it, she immediately put the setting on "5" for ironing cotton. She remembered that "6" was too hot for her cotton clothes (with her old iron), even though the iron says "6" is the number for ironing cotton. She was right. I ironed a pair of shorts and it did a very good job.

This iron has not leaked, but it might be a good idea to iron a few strokes on your ironing board or some spare cloth if you use water for steam, to make sure it doesn't spit or leak. But that is only at first, then you should be good to go. The cord is of average length, like the old irons. And like I said above, the iron gets extremely hot on high settings so you might want to put it on the lowest steam setting at first to test it.

I am giving this iron five stars because it is what it says it is - a classic iron. I would rather have an iron like this than any of the weird looking new-fangled irons. Thanks to Black & Decker for bringing back a small part of my childhood, and making my mother happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pefect & Old Fashioned, September 14, 2005
This review is from: Black & Decker F63D The Classic Metal Iron (Kitchen)
I bought this iron after a visit to my in-laws house. My mother-in-law had this ancient iron and I was actually scared to use it but it did a fast and fabulous job. The weight of the iron helped press all the wrinkles out. My mom-in-law said she could not find this iron anywhere to replace her old one and refused to buy one of the newer more flimsy models.I finally found this one and bought one for myself and after LOVING it, I bought one for my mom-in-law too! She loves it too because not only is it heavy it is also has a steaming feature that works great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good price, decent iron, June 25, 2004

I recently bought this iron for more in a department store. It seems to work just fine. The only negative is that there is no gage where you can check how much water there is. The water didn't have trouble going in, though (or coming out) and it is an attactive iron indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavier weight = fast ironing, August 12, 2004
This review is from: Black & Decker F63D The Classic Metal Iron (Kitchen)
This iron has a nice solid weight which makes for faster ironing. I agree that not being able to see how much water is inside is a drawback, but with even steam, great looks, and a nice pricem it doesn't bother me. Far far better than any plastic iron I've used.

My mom has had one for a year, loves it, and I've just gotten one for myself.

Skeptical: Regarding all the supposed improvements in modern day technology-- I have, in the past, bought cheap and paid dear. One disposable after another...:"leakers", all of them- until this excellently crafted iron. It has the structure and weight of the chore-maker my Mom inflicted on me many moons ago. Who would have thought that I could miss it? But I have --all the cheap reproductions do not not hold a candle to this one. Great steam, ultra-smooth surface and the weight needed to get the job done. Happy productive ironing all-- and KUDOS to B&D P.S.-- No leakage

I love this iron because it is heavy and it gets really, really hot. It takes out every wrinkle. The handle is comfortable to hold. After using it for a couple of years, the plate started pitting and I believe it is because I have hard water. The little holes have clogged up. It then started to "snag" delicate fabrics and I ruined some brand new curtains I was ironing. I tried running some vinegar through it, but I think the damage has been done...it's too late. If I had used distilled water from the beginning, that probably wouldn't have happened. If you have hard water, use distilled and you should be all set. My only complaint is the plate is aluminum instead of non-stick surface. If they put Teflon on this baby, it would be great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use classic, February 16, 2006
This review is from: Black & Decker F63D The Classic Metal Iron (Kitchen)
The iron is performing well in its role, and is very easy to use from the control standpoint. Some of my staff mention that it is a bit heavier than the modern design counterparts. They also mention that they like the clear plastic reservoirs of the more modern units as they can see the water level. However the iron appears to be well constructed and very sturdy. Time will tell if it holds up to leaking reservoirs, stained sole plates and worn out heating units of many of the other brands that we have used over the past years. From a price perspective it was a very good deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the basics, January 15, 2007

I have had several of these irons. I like them because they are heavy and don't automatically turn off. This iron is really nice for basic ironing; however, I have decided they don't work real well when quilting. Sometimes, when pressing small pieces, the fabric gets caught in a steam hole and gets scrunched up, then you have to iron like mad to get it flat again--which may cause distorting of the fabric. All in all, I would get this iron--it used to be made by GE ages ago--it is a workhorse.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Iron Ever, August 8, 2006

My mom used this iron when I was a kid. It is heavy, but that's the beauty of it... less effort on your part to get the wrinkles out!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT Iron!, December 22, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Black & Decker F63D The Classic Metal Iron (Kitchen)
I actually got this identical iron back when I was in high school in the early 90's. I've been using it practically every day since and it's been over 15 years! If you like a heavy steam iron that gets nice and hot without all the silly plastic gizmos of other irons, then this is the one for you. I need a new one because after 15 years, leaving water in it between uses and storing it in a moist, steamy bathroom has taken its toll and it's started to leak. Otherwise it's never failed me. I'm just really happy it's still available and am definitley getting another one.
