I feel like the weight makes ironing so much easier.

The automatic shut off feature works erratically, and frequently turns the iron off in the middle of ironing.

I want you to know I saved all the ironing this week for the arrival of this iron. This is one of the most inexpensive irons offered here at Amazon. It's also better than the others. After one overpriced T-Fal and one even more overpriced Rowenta, I am convinced that 1) some things are better left unchanged and 2) One should never fix that which is not broken. Therefore, I have returned to my ironing roots. This is like the iron I grew up using. This is the type of iron that never let me down. Not fussy. Not awkward. The right size. Not built like it belongs on a spaceship. And most of all........Not made entirely of cheap plastic.

I can honestly say I am sorry I wasted my money on the expensive irons because none of them handled, ironed or made me feel as comfortable as Ye Old Black and Decker The-Way-It-Was-And-The-Way-It-Should-Stay Steam Iron.

It does what an iron is supposed to do and, if placed on its heel (the way I learned how to iron), it doesn't shut off on you 15 times while you are trying to iron a batch of clothing and want to stop and do something else for a minute. If given the choice, I would really revert back to the old days when irons didn't have an automatic shutoff at all. I mean, if you are that ditzy that you can't remember to turn the iron off, well I honestly don't know what to tell you. I'm sure our lawmakers, instead of doing something useful, made some kind of law about irons automatically shutting off so that the person using it can be tortured. This iron does have an auto shutoff, and it's very fast and annoying if you put the soleplate directly on the ironing board, which is an invitation to scortching something. However, if rested on its heel, you have 8 minutes.

To be completely honest, I'm a little surprised at myself for having strong enough feelings (positive or negative) about an iron to write a review. But, alas, here I am.

Very simply, this is the best iron I have ever used. As a male that does not plan ahead well, I tend to iron my clothes on an ad hoc basis, and this iron makes that chore as easy and quick as possible.

Pros:

1. This iron is heavy, even before you fill the reservoir with water. A heavy iron is a good iron. The cheap plastic irons don't work well for a reason; they aren't heavy enough to actually press the wrinkles out of clothes.

2. This iron heats very quickly. When you're ironing a shirt in the morning trying to get ready for work, speed is key. This iron does not disappoint.

3. This iron is inexpensive. The price was the same as the aforementioned cheap plastic irons, but is pretty much better in every way.

4. This iron has simple controls. Kind of a like a blender with an on and off switch, this iron has all of the controls that you need for functionality and no more.

Cons:

None.

My mother used this iron in the '60's and after trying a bunch of different (and much more expensive) brands, I found this iron at a local store, and bought 2! These are heavy (an advantage when pressing lots of seams) and get very hot (Good for quilting cottons). I do not like auto-off, because I want my iron to stay hot. I have it plugged into an outlet that turns off when I turn off the lights as I leave the room, so this is not a problem. Love it.

I've had this for several months now, and just bought one for a family gift for Christmas. Excellent quality. I was initially curious due to the old school look. Black and Decker backed up the look with a heavy, old school iron which performs like products built back in the day performed. It gets hot quick, irons well, sturdy build, and the steam distribution is nice (no leaking water steam "leakouts".) Who likes having solid "sploches" of water blasted out on an oxford dress shirt when trying to iron a shirt for the next day at the office? I've seen irons in the hundreds of dollars and wouldn't bother. I'm in the middle class income range and could afford a more expensive iron, but I am glad I bought this one. I got both through Amazon and their customer service is excellent. If the iron didn't work out, I could've returned it easily.

Added features for the modern era = auto shutoff, a dual green/red LED to show on/off status. Large spout to pour in water for steam. I dig the old school button and temp adjustment control.

Bottom line- get this one, you will be satisfied. In this day and age of "make everything super cheap, it'll work fine for a while then fail, but we make good profit and the customer will have no recourse"... this product isn't in this category. Give it a whirl, you'll see I'm right.

I iron a lot and the newer ones don't get hot enough and do not last! This is the one I always go back to. This iron gets hot and is a great iron. The only negative might be that it's heavy, but that's part of what I like!

I do a lot of sewing and ironing men's shirts. This iron is great for both. It is a little heavier than the plastic irons, and much more sturdy. It is very simple and easy to use. This is the iron your Momma had in the 50's! It is awesome!
