Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The high-powered 12-volt drill from Black and Decker offers faster drilling with a new Quick Connect Bit Change system, electronic level, Infinite Clutch, and more torque than the competition. The patented Quick Connect Bit Change System, exclusive to the FireStorm drill line, speeds up drilling by allowing you to drill holes and drive screws without changing a single accessory. The System features a removable 3/8-inch keyless chuck that accepts both round and hex shank bits. The chuck is quickly and effortlessly removed to expose a screwdriving bit. The removable chuck is especially useful when making a pilot hole (pilot bit in the removable chuck) and then driving the screw (remove chuck to expose screwdriver bit) in a repetitive manner. The internal screwdriving bit holder features a pull and release collar that secures screwdriving bits or quickly adds 1/4-inch hex shank drill bits. To help with straight and level drilling, the FireStorm drills have an electronic level built into the end of the drill. When the drill is in a level position the LED display lights up. Another new and exclusive feature is the Infinite clutch, which offers a spectrum of clutch settings selected by visual reference guide of screw size. The FireStorm battery has been redesigned with a "spring-loaded" pack, which springs forward like a cassette with the push of a button, and then easily slides off. The drill is sold in an innovative storage box that mounts to the wall with clips to hold the drill and charger in place when not in use. The FSD122K-2 includes the drill, two batteries, charger, #2 Phillips bit, 1/8-inch hex shank drill bit, and wall mountable storage case.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough drill for a serious home repair person,, January 2, 2002
This review is from: Black & Decker FSD122K-2 12-Volt FireStorm Cordless Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I bought this after Christmas and was snagged by the price. Only Craftman comes close to this price for a 12v.

I needed to drill and torque down a banister. After charging both batteries (over 6 hours for both). I started on the project but the drill lacked the needed torque for the lag bolts and the batteries were quickly depleted and needed another charage.

The real issue of a serious drill is torque and "Durability" of the battery(s)... With this B&D the battery charge took a very long time and then the batteries were not, using the definition for "durable" > "able to exist for a long time without significant deterioration".

IF you are a serious a serious home repair person spend the extra [price] and move up to B&D 14.4volt Firestorm Drill - both torque and battery durablity will be significantly better.

2.0 out of 5 stars Should be called "Cordless Screwdriver", September 26, 2004

Paul G. Brush (Floral Park, New York United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Black & Decker FSD122K-2 12-Volt FireStorm Cordless Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
For a 12V drill, it certainly lacks sufficient power for common drilling tasks. With the clutch torqued all the way down, the drill choked trying to bore out a 2 1/8" hole through a hollow-core door. After five minutes of backing the bit out and back in, the chuck started slipping, rendering it useless. A two-minute job eventually took 20 minutes. It works great as a screwdriver, though. A bright orange, $70 screwdriver. For people installing bookshelves and hanging pictures, it's a fine tool, but for serious users, go buy a Milwaukee.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for home, June 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Black & Decker FSD122K-2 12-Volt FireStorm Cordless Drill Kit (Tools & Home Improvement)
I got this tool for Christmas 2001 and I've used it a lot. I have used it for a variety of home repair uses and found it to be very well suited for those projects such as furniture assembly, hanging curtain rods, hanging blinds, bathroom fixtures such as towel racks, hanging flower boxes with larger screws into my home. Batteries work fine and last a reasonable time. I have not tried anything super heavy duty. I am very pleased witht this and plan to buy one for my sister as a house warming gift. It is heavy enough for everything I've tried but light enough to be easy to handle.
