5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful product!
I received this steamer as a gift from my sister. I love it! I especially love that you can add your own herbs/spices in the spice basket. I have cooked all sorts of vegetables with it, with great results. However, I think the most surprising use (for me) was hardboiling eggs. I did not have one egg crack, and the shell just peeled off so easily when they were cool...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Steamer
I like this steamer a lot. But it doesn't do what I thought it would do, I thought I would be able to steam rice and veggies at the same time. If you can, I haven't figured it out yet. Anyhow, I still like the way it steams veggies, so I am thoughly using it for that. I have a seperate machine for rice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something I Use Almost Every Day, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker HS900 Flavor Scenter Steamer Plus (Electronics)
I received this steamer as a gift from my daughter after she realized I loved using hers when I came to visit. I have used this steamer at least five times a week for probably four years. As I was cleaning up tonight I thought I should let others know that it is very reliable, has had no mechanical problems, is easy to clean and by steaming the veggies are cooked in a very healthy, low fat way. It is a terrific way to cook broccoli, asparagus and fresh corn, along with any other fresh vegetable you can imagine. I have also found it great to steam frozen chicken breasts and the broth can be saved for soups. It is probably one of the most used appliances in our kitchen.

I have had a Black & Decker food steamer for 12 years but a part has worn out, so, it was cheaper to purchase an entire (not new) unit than order a replacement "part" from Black & Decker. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this kitchen appliance over most anything else for an average kitchen other than maybe a coffeemaker.

4.0 out of 5 stars B&D steamer, October 30, 2007

I have been quite happy with my purchase it does everything it was advertised to do. We particularly enjoy summer squash done this way. If I have any issue it would be with carrots, They tend to stain the white plastic parts a light yellow. not a big problem since the contact areas are out of sight when the unit is assembled on the counter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Steamer earns a place on the counter, February 17, 2008
Purchasing the B&D HS900 Food Steamer was the result of several conversations with friends who had bought another type. This one will steam vegetables to crisp perfection as well as making rice without the sticky, clumpy problems others have. Its best feature is its timer which automatically turns it off. Set it and the rice is taken care of. It has an "aroma" thingy that is supposed to infuse the veggies with the smell and flavor of your choice of spices without actually adding the spice but I haven't used that option yet and don't really see a need too. What the thingy does do that sets this steamer apart from others is that it keeps the condensate from dripping back into the water that is used to make the steam and keeps the boiling area clean. No more weird burning smell and a breeze to clean: dump out the water and dry with a towel. All the parts, except for the base, go into the Dish Washer. The parts then stack for storage. However, the stack is a smidgen unstable resulting in probable droppage (especially when I do it) while storing, hence, I leave mine out on the counter as I use it about 6 times a week anyway. It has earned a place right next to the coffee maker.

I have used this product for years and am crazy about it. But isn't anybody else worried about pbt (a chemical) being released during the steaming process into your food. pbt is known to cause cancer. I've been looking for black and decker to come up with one that has a metal or steel basket and they haven't yet. get with the times b&d, we've all gone green.

maybe I didn't buy the best size steamer for my needs. I use it mostly to steam vegetables and rice for my dogs who are on prescription dog food and have to eat a very low fat diet. It seems like the large size of the product doesn't match the small amount of vegetables you can cook at one time. I've also tried eggs but it's definitely easier to cook hard-boiled eggs on the stove top. So far the rice seems lumpy but perhaps I'm not getting a precise enough measurement on the rice and/or water used. You can also boil chicken and fish in this model. Haven't tried it yet but will soon.
