4.0 out of 5 stars cordless or cord
I had my heart set on a cordless, but now I am glad I purchased this model. Two things sold me on it. The first was the extra reach. I needed it for some of my bushes that are over six feet high. The second was those hardened blades. I knew they would last longer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for thicker branches but poor for finer trimming
I've used Black & Decker hedge trimmers for decades and always felt they were well built, economically priced and performed well. However I am fairly disappointed with this HedgeHog model. While it trims thicker branches (1/8"+) nicely, the blade does not seem to be designed for the fine feather and needle covering of a typical evergreen hedge. I found that the blade...

4.0 out of 5 stars cordless or cord, July 21, 2007

I had my heart set on a cordless, but now I am glad I purchased this model. Two things sold me on it. The first was the extra reach. I needed it for some of my bushes that are over six feet high. The second was those hardened blades. I knew they would last longer.
The design and being able to hold it with one hand also helped, as did the fact that it could handle thicker branches.
I do not understand the reviewer that needed two passes. For the thicker branches , you hold it there and it eventually chews thru them. I comes down to taking your time. The longer blade also makes it easier to shape large bushes.
This hedge trimmer has cut everything I threw at it and hardly missed a beat. It easy to balance with one hand , but it does become heavy although still manageable with only one hand.
Like many, I was not a fan of B&D products. I bought this because of the combination of features that were not available on other brands. I don't like having to use a cord, but that is balanced out by how effective it is in doing it's job. Having the extra power is the tradeoff.
Usually I review every purchase I can on Amazon , but this was more of a spur of the moment decision. The current price ($70) , plus the free shipping makes Amazon the place to buy it from.
I could not find a better hedge trimmer. This time B&D got it right. Minus one star from not being cordless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome tool...., August 3, 2007

UPDATE 2/18/2010:
Just to update, I have used this to cut through very thick ivy, etc., and it is still going, and cutting fairly well. I should also note that I have not maintained this at all. I have not cleaned or oiled the blades, etc., and it still works very well. I am VERY pleased with this and recommend it VERY highly

This is a really great trimmer. It handles thick branches very well. I cut half inch branches easily enough. It is well balanced, and I was even able to use it with one hand when I really had to stretch (I would not recommend this, as it is a bit dangerous). One thing that many people do not consider with these electric tools, sometimes, the extension cord releases easily. This is not the case here, I am happy to report. I am very happy I bought this. It makes my hedge trimming very easy. It is easy to maneuver, and I think you will be very happy using this product.

June 2008 addition:
Okay, almost a year has passed and this thing is still going strong. It cuts like butter....still. It is easily the best garden tool purchase I have made, and I have made some good ones. It does not bog down unless the branches are REALLY thick (read: do not fit between the teeth completely). Look no further and buy this trimmer. It's just great....the only annoyance is that the plug comes out easily using my new extension cord.....ehem....it seems while I was using the trimmer to clear out more ivy than anyone can imagine, the cord got hidden underneath some of the iyv I had not reached and when I did get to it I might not have been.....ehem....paying as much attention.....cough, cough....as I should have, and, well, you know, ehem, the trimmer stopped working. When I looked down I saw the cord was still plugged into the trimmer, but then I noticed the dangling piece of cord about 8 feet down and am happy to report that if needed this thing will cut through a 12 gauge extension cord with ease and better than any wire cutter! Luckily for me, I did not get any kind of shock, etc., (of course, it was plugged into a GFCI outlet). That's the good news. The bad news is I threw out the extension cord which, at 100 feet, costs almost what the trimmer cost. The good news is my friend later informed me that it is an easy fix to splice the wires back together. Bad news is, he told me this AFTER the garbage men took the garbage.....Lesson learned, and I only mention this in the hopes that everyone who reads this takes better care than I did. All joking aside, this could have had a completely different ending, and I am quite lucky to be able to edit this review. I can only imagine what might have happened if I were standing in a puddle, or something (I don't want to test the GFCI). So, since it only cost me a new extension cord, I figure I got away cheap. ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful Trimmer!, January 2, 2007

Given it's light weight, this is a remarkably powerful machine. 1/4" branches are no problem at all. It is well balanced and light enough for one-handed operation when you are stretching to reach that elusive branch from your ladder. I am replacing a 12 year old B & D trimmer that finally died, so I am optimistic about the longevity of this one.

Very nice hedger for the price. I like the adjustable handle and lightweight. Plenty of power for evergreens. Cuts better than the older hedge hogs. Acceptable vibrations, just a little to noisy for an electric. Works better if you keep the blade lubed. I use motorcycle chain lube, seems to stay on longer than regular oil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought I'd never buy another B & D product again ..., July 26, 2007

B&D has gone down hill over the years, but could all these great reviews be wrong??? After looking at the specs and design I took a chance. It's still too early to know how much abuse it can take, but the average homeowner won't be disappointed. The maximum branch diameter is on the optimistic side as most are, but with a good extension cord, it will take 1/2" branches without a complaint. Runs far smoother and much quieter than those from the last millenium. They got this one right ... if you're a weekend yard warrior, or debating a gas model, save your money and give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long reach!, January 3, 2007

Good balance for the long reach of this trimmer. Ample power to do the job, and the HH2450 makes it (relatively) easy in the doing. Best performance of any of several hedge trimmers I have used.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good for thicker branches but poor for finer trimming, October 30, 2009
This review is from: Black & Decker HH2455 24" Hedge Hog Hedge Trimmer (Lawn & Patio)
I found that the blade was fairly slow in cutting this material and rather than a nice crisp cut, it tended to 'yank' the needles off and leave a short length of fine white fiber behind. Almost seems as though the blade is dull, but in this case it's a new unit.

I have discussed this trimmer in more detail with a professional who agreed that it is not really designed for cutting the fine material on yews, etc. He said the gap between the teeth allows for cutting larger branches more efficiently but reduces the sharpness of cut for finer material. He said that B&D makes trimmers with tighter tooth configurations which seem to work much better on the fine stuff. That makes sense to me, although I think B&D should be a little more clear in how they describe the Hedge Hog, it's really more of a small-brush cutter rather than a hedge trimmer. It also works well for cutting back hydrangeas, etc. that have twig-like growth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy Lou Too, February 25, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker HH2455 24" Hedge Hog Hedge Trimmer (Lawn & Patio)
I've been using gas powered hedgers for over 30 years and without a doubt for comparison purposes this electric one is the best of all for ease of use, less fatigue, quietness, good ballance, smooth operation, and overall quality of results. Just plug it in and start cutting. I've used it using extension cords up to 160 ft.(14 guage wire) cutting branches up to 3/8 in. in diameter without any noticeable loss of power.

wow, what a great product. My original debate was between this model and the cordless version and I'm glad I went with this particular model. I found its length its power and its handling to be very helpful and I would recommend this product to anyone else. I haven't thought of Black & Decker tools as being the highest quality in the past, but this one sure raises my opinion of them. It is well constructed, sturdy and seems to be very good value for the price.
