The internal battery can be replaced with an AGM unit that will hold it's charge much longer, 9-12 months typically. The replacement battery needs special larger terminals that are hard to find. Most 1290 batteries use 1/4" terminals that are much too small and won't work with the wiring used. You need a 1290 battery that has bolt style terminals, very hard to find. Search for the HR9-12B, made by BB battery. A web search will turn it up for under $40. Open the screws on the back and just swap out your dead battery.
My charger also stopped functioning after a year. It's just a cheap wall-wart type plug in power pack mounted into the housing so it's AC prongs stick out. At it's listed voltage, it will never charge the battery beyond 50% or so. I charge my unit through the jumper cables using a Battery Tender. The Jr. model 021-0123 available from Amazon for $23 works just fine and they all use the correct charging method to make sure the battery gets to 100%. Or you can charge it using your car while the engine is running. A good fully charged battery should read 12.8-13V an hour after being taken off the charger.
I got one and it worked great. A relative had a car whose battery kept dying so I gave it to him and ordered a second one. It arrived DOA. It wouldn't charge. Because of the lead-acid battery you can't send it back to Amazon, so I called the company (Baccus Global) and they sent me the info to send it back to them. It is so heavy it cost $35 to ship it to them (the cheapest rate!). I haven't heard back from them yet (it has been a few weeks). So I'm out at least an extra $35, and lord only knows when or if I'll get a replacement unit back.
I'm rating it 3 stars because when it does work it is great. If it takes weeks to get a replacement, I'll certainly update my review downward!
Edit update: Note that a replacement arrived and it works fine.
Certainly will not recommend this to any one not even those I dislike.
