4.0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker Lids Off
I bought this product back in May of 2003, when it first came out. I saw it advertised on TV. My wife had been complaining for years that she could no longer open jars, and she had to wait for me or my stepson to get home, to open them. Since her Birthday is in May I decided to buy one for her Birthday. At the time this was a new product and I could not find in any...

3.0 out of 5 stars Weak Handle
Machine is 20 months old, never damaged. Handle is fracturing where it is molded to the top. Fracture is over 1" and expanding. B&D sold responsibility on most household items to Applica Inc. in 1998. Nice to know that piece of info when machine was purchased new in 2003 and B&D doesn't want the responsibility.

I bought this product back in May of 2003, when it first came out. I saw it advertised on TV. My wife had been complaining for years that she could no longer open jars, and she had to wait for me or my stepson to get home, to open them. Since her Birthday is in May I decided to buy one for her Birthday. At the time this was a new product and I could not find in any stores. I ordered it from the Black&Decker web sire for $49.99 with free shipping.
I gave this to my wife on her birthday and she loves it. She uses it all the time for the jars that she can not open. All you do is sit a jar in the machine, close the holders on the bottom of the jar, and then lower the top down to the lid. Then you push a button and it turns the lid and takes it off. A great invention, what took so long for it to come out? I see you now can get a good deal on Amozon for only $39.99 don't pass up this great deal.
My only complaint is that the top dosn't raise high enough to open soda bottles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much-Needed Gadget, November 25, 2003

I bought one of these devices for my wife and one for my mother and both enjoy them very much. It may sound odd, but as folks get older a simple task such as opening a jar can be quite a challenge, especially for people living alone. The same is true for people of all ages who suffer from arthritis or other problems that restrict hand strength. This product is ideal for such people. We found it to work exactly as advertised. It was simple to use, required almost no effort and opened even the most difficult-to-open jars, large and small. No more banging, prying or using hot water. My 89-year-old mother had no trouble using it with only minimal explanation. And now my daughter-in-law wants to buy two more--one for her mom and one for herself. It remains to be seen if this product will survive the test of time, but so far it seems to work fine.

I bought this on sale and was pleased to see that it works. My wife is very petite (under 100 lbs.) and when I am not home sometimes unable to open sticky jars. Well, this will open anything you can fit into it (pretty much any jar commonly used). I have used it a couple of times for wet jars rather than look for the rubber grip. I like it too. Would be wonderful for anyone with grip or strength limitations. It does take up a lot of counter space, however.

I live with 2 women and a baby.
One of the women was born with one hand and has considerable trouble opening jars.
The other woman is almost 60 and the baby is about 2.
I also have problems opening jars, because of my occupation, with my hands losing strength more and more as I grow older.
This thing really helped us out, especially with all the jars of babyfood we have had to open.
I don't see much of a limitation of jar size with what we buy, the thing will open pretty tall jars and does even the little babyfood jars no problem. (we don't buy many pickles or giant jars of mayo)
I am not sure I'd say it is the greatest thing since sliced bread but it seems very durable and easy to use.
It is a little awkward at first but once you figure out how to get the base adjustment to work right there's nothing to it.
Also there are 2 little black pads that they put on but they keep sliding off, just throw them away, it works fine without them. Maybe they changed that by now.

Anyway, we love this thing. I hope you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Product that WORKS!!, November 30, 2005

I don't write reviews for many items, but this product WORKS! I have purchased it for my Mother, Grandmother and Mother-In-Law. They all rave about the ease-of-use and effectiveness. Just remember...NO CANS!! It seems my mother and grandmother both had a temporary lapse of memory and placed cans in the opener. And I have to say, cans are really hard to get out!! So, despite the odd chance of "user error," this product is FANTASTIC!!!

What a great appliance! It's so easy to use and opens jars of all sizes (so far, jam, green olives, cocktail sauce, etc.) I used to save up all the jars I couldn't open for a "strong" friend to open. No more. [It does take away that small bit of everyday entertainment that arises when several people pass a jar back and forth trying to open it] But it's so much better and faster to just put the jar in the opener; this is one appliance that stays on the kitchen counter.

5.0 out of 5 stars De-lid with the best - Black and Decker, November 5, 2004
This review is from: Black & Decker JW200 Lids Off Jar Opener, White (Kitchen)
Like any red-blooded American, I open a lot of jars. Whether they be for grape jelly, mayonnaise (or an equivalent mayonnaise-type salad dressing), pickles or strawberry jelly, it always seems like I'm always de-lidding my food products. I wasn't ever sure that I needed a machine to help me do it, though. So when Grandmother Snerdley gave me this device for Christmas, I was skeptical - what did I need with a jar opener? I figured it would be yet another gift from her that would get stowed away in the attic (along with the apple peeler, the apple corer, the perfect egg egg maker, and literally dozens of items she never gave me the receipt for). Sure enough, I tossed it up there with a laugh, forgetting it even existed.

Then one day, I came across the toughest jar of pickles I'd ever encountered. I'm talking the kind that will break a man's wrist if he's not careful! I must have spent thirty minutes with that jar, to no avail. I began to think I'd probably have to eat my sandwich sans pickles. Then, as if a lightbulb went off in my head, I thought of this machine. I ventured up to the attic and retrieved it. Within brief moments, I was chomping down on my sandwich - with those pickles, whose jar was short work for the JW200.

Now, I open no jars without the aid of this device. None. I even try to share the wealth with others, occasionally setting up a table at the grocery store to help old ladies with their assorted jellies, jams and the like. Sometimes people will even ask me if they can try the JW200 out. . .I usually say no, but I'll say it in such a way that it comes out like a joke and makes them laugh, which removes the awkwardness from the situation.

Stop hurting your wrists - get the Black and Decker JW200 Lids Off Jar Opener today!!

I gave this to my mom last year for Christmas, and it's great. She's always been a great cook, but the arthritis in her hands would frustrate her while cooking. This was a big help. Not a terribly glamorous gift, but still great!

I have had Surgery on my right shoulder which has severly limited the strength of that arm. I am 76. I live alone. Without this Jar Opener there are many jars which would cause severe pain to open. Thanks to the JW200 I don't have to avoid some of my favorite foods when grocery shopping.

I trust this review is, tho short is acceptable. [...]
