5.0 out of 5 stars Can your "opening frustrations" with this gem!
I'd been using a manual OXO can opener for the last 2 years, but recently, it developed rust and ceased to function. I grew up with electric can openers, but have not had a single one in 25 years on my own--until now. I own the Ergo electric carving knife and loved it so much that I decided to give their can opener a try, and it's a fabulous appliance! I'm disabled...

1.0 out of 5 stars Great but doesn't work for very long
Loved this thing the moment I found it. There isn't another cordless can opener, that I have found, on the market. Unfortunately, it only works for a few months then it conks out and I had to exchange it for another one. Same thing happened to can opener #2 so I just returned it and got a can opener w/ a cord.

I'm disabled (fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis) so clumsy, heavy openers won't do. The Ergo is balanced, small, comfortable to hold and use, and it does the job quickly and neatly. The ni-cad batteries have lasted an entire week (so far) on a single charge. The charging base is small and light, and sits easily out of the way. I love the way the cutting element can be removed for cleaning, then slips right back in! Even if you're not disabled, this is a terrific appliance, and the value is greater, IMHO, than the conventional electric, and hand-held openers out there:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, May 19, 2000

Go for it. Move the opener to the can instead of the other way around. Much easier to use than the Krups portable. Operates just like a traditional opener with a blade. The grip fits your hand very easily. We love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended to all can-opening enthusiasts, January 29, 2001

This is clearly the best of the best. It's a gadget that's both well designed (as in pretty) AND does what it is expected to do, which is open cans, better than I expected. The 'cutting' module is very easy to remove and then re-attach, for cleaning purposes.

I should mention that the recharging base has this new technology where you don't really 'plug' the device into anything. You simply 'drop' it in the base and the can opener gets charged just by being there. We didn't own it for long enough to verify the claim, but the manual claims the it doesn't need to be charged more often than once a month, with about 30 minutes of continuous can-opening life after a full charge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for People with "bad" Hands!, July 22, 2001
This review is from: Black & Decker KEC500 Ergo Cordless Can Opener (Kitchen)
I have severe carpal tunnel and osteoarthritis in my hands -- this can opener is a great help as it truly does walk around the can by itself once started. The other great feature is the fact that you don't have to go thru contortions to open larger cans that don't always fit under the traditional electric can openers. Plus, since it's cordless, you can take it along on a picnic/outing/trip -- the charge holds for quite a while.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Ingenious Device, April 5, 2001
This review is from: Black & Decker KEC500 Ergo Cordless Can Opener (Kitchen)
This is the third electric can opener that I have bought in a year. I had an old Ronson Can Do (only made for one year, 1971) for 29 years and it finally died. Since then, I have been on a quest to find one that was as convenient to use, and the ERGO is it!

I love the fact that you take the ERGO out of the base to use it, so I am not restricted to where the socket is located. I charge mine in an out-of-the-way corner in my kitchen and then use it wherever I want.

One great thing is the ease of positioning the blade, which was the problem with the others that I recently bought. It is also very comfortable in my hand.

Thanks AGAIN, Black and Decker!

5.0 out of 5 stars Black & Decker KEC500 Ergo Cordless Can Opener, September 10, 2001

While it took a few tries to get comfortable with it, we now love this can opener! We've been through several other brands, models, and types--this is the cat's meow. With four cats and seven dogs, we open a lot of cans. This little gadget has made feeding time a breeze. Just be patient until you learn how to get the blade started in the can.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for People With One Arm, April 21, 2001

This review is from: Black & Decker KEC500 Ergo Cordless Can Opener (Kitchen)
I've used this product for about two months with great success. My arm was severed in an accident about 14 weeks ago, and I needed something for a one-handed person. This is it! After learning to position the cutting blade, I've had no trouble and the magnet keeps the lid from falling into the can. My main concern is that it last for at least a year or two. If it does, it will be perfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Both Worlds, November 1, 2001
By
This review is from: Black & Decker KEC500 Ergo Cordless Can Opener (Kitchen)
We have tried just about every can opener available - countertop, under-counter, manual - and by far this is the best. You get the best of both worlds; an electric can opener with the portability of a manual. It is very easy to use, an we recommend it fully.

Overall this thing isn't bad, but it sometimes is tough to get it set on the can properly. I usually struggle to get the blade in the right position before I can open it. I used to have the B&D Spacemaker hideaway, and I never had this kind of trouble.
