Update - I liked this driver until it stopped taking a charge after less than a year.

I love my cordless Makita drill, but every time I need to use it, it has to be charged first - not exactly convenient. I bought my dad a small lithium-ion driver last year and got a chance to use it when I helped him with a project. It keeps its charge for over a year and is pretty powerful for a compact driver. So, I decided to purchase this B&D driver. I charge it once and store it. Then, when I need it, it's ready to go. It keeps a charge during most small projects and has enough torque to drive 2" screws into concrete. The LED light is an added plus. My only complaint is that the included bits cannot be attached or stored on the driver when not in use. This makes it easy to lose one of the bits. Other than that, it works great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Technical Details Error, February 11, 2010
This review is from: Black & Decker LI3100 Compact Lithium-Ion Driver with Cordless Rechargeable Screwdriver (Tools & Home Improvement)
I am looking for a cordless screwdriver to replace the B&D 9078 (multi-position handle, multi-setting clutch) that I had happily used for many years. Unfortunately, my 9078 finally died. (As with most of these B&D rechargeable screwdrivers, the battery is not user-replaceable, and it is cost-prohibitive to have it replaced at a B&D authorized repair shop out of warranty.) Although the 9078 is still sold on-line and in stores, I wanted to move up to a lithium-ion battery. I have other lithium-ion power tools, and I love the long shelf life between uses, greater power to weight ratio, and fast recharge.

During my search, this B&D LI3100 model caught my eye. However, please note that Amazon's Technical Details listing is incorrect: the LI3100 does not have a multi-postion handle nor does it have an adjustable clutch (for further details, check the B&D website [...]). Based on reviews that I have read on other sites (only one review here on Amazon), this still appears to be a very handy screwdriver (hence my presumptive 5-star rating). However, if you want a lithium-ion battery, plus the adjustable handle and clutch (as I do), you'll need to keep looking.

P.S. I note that many of the reviews for similar rechargeable screwdrivers criticize the limited torque/power of these units. Please remember that these are "cordless screwdrivers" - not "cordless drills". You can't use one of these to build a deck, but they are very handy for a host of other uses: hanging pictures, attaching/removing fixtures, and many other handy-man jobs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy to have around the house, December 30, 2010
This review is from: Black & Decker LI3100 Compact Lithium-Ion Driver with Cordless Rechargeable Screwdriver (Tools & Home Improvement)
I got one of these a week ago and have used it for several jobs so far. I have other "contractor grade" tools but wanted a small cordless screwdriver handy for small jobs in the house. On the plus side, it does everything you expect it to and since it has a pretty small offset between the bit axis and the top of the case, it will get into corners well. The Li-ion battery should provide the expected benefit of charge retention over time. The negatives are really just what you would expect at this price point: (1) No variable speed control, and (2) the LED light comes on concurrent with the start of rotation instead of before. To get a tool with these features I expect you would have to pay considerably more. Also, a bit holder on the tool would have been nice so you could conveniently carry both a Phillips and slotted bit. You just need to decide if the low price justifies living with these annoyances. It does for me.

Don't get suckered into thinking the "price cut" from $50+ is a great deal. Everyday price for this item is $28 at Lowes down the street and you don't have to wait for it to ship.

I just got this as a gold box special and i like it. It has a lot of torque and the small light helps in dark, small places. My only complaint is that the 10 peice, double ended bit tip set recommended by amazon for this screwdriver does not fit it!!! Only single ended tips will work!

I bought this cordless driver to replace a Skil IXO2 whose reversing switch died. I wasn't looking for a driver with lots of bits or accessories since those came with the Skil and I had those already. The reversing switch on this driver seems more robust and hopefully won't fail like the Skil's. They're fairly comparable units and I have no major complaints. The only minor shortcoming is no charging indicator to let you know when the driver is fully charged. Other than that, a nice unit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great product for domestic use!, October 11, 2010

Excellent! Great product for domestic use. It's powerful and the battery last enough time (i haven't run out of battery with this tool yet). The down side about it is the absence of a magnet to hold the screw. Also, you will probably need to buy a Screwdriving Bit Set. It comes only with two Hex Shank Screwdriving Bits. That's why I am giving only 4 stars.
i bought this product to assemble furnitures (most of purchased in Ikea). Really good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice small driver - my wife loves it, October 11, 2010

This review is from: Black & Decker LI3100 Compact Lithium-Ion Driver with Cordless Rechargeable Screwdriver (Tools & Home Improvement)
This is a pretty cool product, just perfect for my wife's hand. She likes the LED light, and she likes that it's very easy to use. It obviously is meant for smaller jobs, and might have trouble running a 3" screw into wood, but for the typical household usage, it appears to be perfectly adequate.

There is only one complaint. It comes with two tips to insert - one for hex screws and one for flat head screws. There is no place to store the additional tip on the device. A built in clip for that on the unit would be nice to keep from losing the second tip.
