__
The cordless LST136 string trimmer.

Offering Black & Decker's exclusive PowerDrive Transmission, the 13-inch cordless LST136 trimmer and edger delivers more power from the motor to the cutting string so you can get the job done faster. You'll be able to trim grass in hard-to-reach areas where mowers cannot cut while also maintaining a neat edging along hard surfaces. It's powered by Black & Decker's high-powered 36-volt lithium battery system, which offers power, excellent runtime, and the versatility to share batteries with other tools within the system.

The Lithium Advantage

Black & Decker's 36-volt lithium-ion system offers numerous benefits over older battery technologies and gas options, notably the ability to put more power into a small and compact battery. Lithium batteries have a longer lifecycle than other types, and they also hold their charge longer when taken off the charger. This means that once charged, a lithium battery is always ready to use. The included Energy Star-rated fast charger fully recharges the battery in about 1 hour.

Trimming Power and Convenience

Choose the amount of power you need to get the job done faster and more efficiently. Use PowerCommand dial to choose between max power to tackle thick weeds (8500 RPM) and max runtime to increase battery life (6500 RPM). The PowerDrive Transmission design provides more cutting force to cut twice the amount of branches at one time.

The LST136's head can be rotated 180-degrees for quick switches between cutting and edging tasks. It also offers Black & Decker's Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) system, which uses centrifugal force to dispense more line whenever you need it for added predictability and dependability--no bumping required. Other features include an auxiliary handle with quick release, 13-inch cutting swath, and 0.065 line diameter.

I've had a corded Toro trimmer for the last 6 years or so. Initially it had one of those bump and grind line feeding thingies which drove me stark raving mad so I replaced it with this grass gator thingamajig which took pre-cut lengths of thicker, green-twizzler looking line. It worked great. I bought a huge spool of the line and cut it myself and have not had to buy line again in all those years.

Now... this could partly be because I hate trimming so much that I don't do it as often as I should. I tend to do it when things really look bad, or when company is coming. While the trimmer itself works great, lugging all that cord around, switching outlets, having it come unplugged randomly, having to wind it all back up again in the end... drives me crazy.

I keep thinking about a gas powered trimmer - but the maintenance scares me. Reviews of the cordless electrics have tended to be hit or miss. But we have had a 36v B&D cordless lawnmower for a few years now and I am very happy with it so since this new version of the 36v cordless trimmer came out I thought I would give it a go.

I just used it for the first time and am very happy. It doesn't feel like it has quite the oomph of my Toro, due to the single thin line vs. the dual twizzler line, I think - but it whacked through everything I needed it to. Things were pretty bad this first time out as I've been neglecting to trim for weeks - have mowed the grass 4 times or so this season but not trimmed at all. So I am going to have to wait for stuff to kind of dry up and blow away to see what I missed and give it another go. I tried to keep it no more than 3 or 4 power while using it, though.

I just got this thing last night to replace my pricey 2 cycle Stihl string trimmer. I never used it enough, and I always had a difficult time starting it. After looking at Stihl's battery offering ($400!), I decided to try this B&D.

I was a little hesitant since B&D is not exactly commercial grade, but reviews at home center sites were very favorable. I LOVE THIS THING! My grass on the edges was loooong in addition to having various thick stalked flora to accompany my neglect.

The trimmer had no issue with any of it. It cut through milkweed and other stalky weeds with ease. It is much lighter and far easier to handle than my Stihl trimmer; I had way less fatigue. My lot is about 16,000 ft2 with fences, landscaping stones, a hedge row, and 5 fully grown trees, and it did the whole thing on one charge. It was almost depleted at the end, but this wasn't a typical trim job as I had completely let it go for a year.

The only thing I'm not completely sold on is the self feeding line. It seemed to be short by the end of the job and was not feeding out. I haven't dug deeper as to why - maybe it needs to hit a certain length before it feeds. And, to jump on the other reviewer's comment, I don't really know how much line I'm going through. It is time like these that having the ability to bump out the line is nice. But I'm not too worried about it and will keep an eye on it. If it becomes a problem I will update the review.

I"ll keep you posted as to how well this thing holds up. But as of now, I have a Stihl trimmer for sale if anyone's interested; I won't be using it anymore.

First, let me say that I was very impressed with this trimmer when I first bought it. My experience was in line with most of the reviewers here. However, over the winter, both batteries have failed. When put in the charger, the "broken battery" signal (rapidly flashing red light) comes on and the charger refuses to charge the batteries, even though one of them still has a significant charge. What makes this failure so bad is that:

1) I bought the two batteries from 2 different sources, so it isn't just a "bad batch." One came with the trimmer, and I later bought an extra from Amazon.

2) The batteries were used less than 5 times, then put away for the winter. BOTH failed to charge upon first use this spring.

It's a shame because the design of the trimmer is good, but without functional batteries, this is just a $140 paperweight. (it'll hold a lot of paper!) This isn't the first time I've had trouble with Black and Decker batteries, but with these new lithium batteries, I had hoped B&D had turned over a new leaf. I was wrong.

I was a bit reluctant to buy a cordless trimmer. Lithium batteries have vastly improved the longevity of cordless tools, but I know that under heavy loads they are still not comparable to cored tools. However, the convenience of battery powered tools often out weights that shortcoming, and that is truly the case for me. I have a large yard that requires a cumbersome 150 feet cord to reach the corners with a cored string trimmer. I also have a gas trimmer, but it's difficult to start/operate, and my wife who does most of the yard work won't use it.

I picked the B&D 36 volt, because based on my experience with cordless power tools, I know even 24 volt lithium can be marginal for medium to heavy-duty tasks. The B&D LSD136 also comes with a 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee and 3 Year Full Warranty, which minimizes the risk.

I was very surprised by the performance of this 36V B&D trimmer. I was far behind on the grass trimming, so I put it to the test. I did light trimming at low speed for 45 minutes, and some heavy-duty full 13 inch trimming to finish out the battery. Rarely would I need an hour of trimming time, but it's nice to have that option. The battery recharged in less than an hour and my wife used it to do some light-duty edging. This initial use really impressed me, and I'll probably buy the Black & Decker LSWV36 cordless leaf blower when it becomes available.

SEPTEMBER 2012 Update

I used the trimmer every week or two to edge and trim along borders/fences for 4 months. The battery easily holds up for about 45 minutes of light to medium trimming on the slow-middle speed setting. It is not a as long lasting as I hope, because on the high speed in heavy/long grass I've gotten just 15-20 minutes use.
