5.0 out of 5 stars Very good large rice cooker
I was a little leery given that B&D is not known for rice cookers. However, I did not want to spend alot of money but wanted something more than the basic glass top el-cheapo models where the lids rattle when cooking due to steam bubbling. I also wanted something big enough for parties. This rice cooker works very well. The rice comes out fluffy and thoroughly cooked,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good rice, but unreliable product: Keep your receipt!
I agree with most of the other reviews in that the rice is good when it gets cooked. However, this product is unreliable. The "Cook" button frequently pops up to "Warm" before the rice has finished cooking. Also, if you leave the rice on the "Warm" option for more than an hour or so, the rice on the bottom will burn. I cook rice appx twice a week and have had this...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good large rice cooker, June 7, 2005
This review is from: Black & Decker RC850 24-Cup Rice Cooker and Vegetable Steamer (Kitchen)
I was a little leery given that B&D is not known for rice cookers. However, I did not want to spend alot of money but wanted something more than the basic glass top el-cheapo models where the lids rattle when cooking due to steam bubbling. I also wanted something big enough for parties. This rice cooker works very well. The rice comes out fluffy and thoroughly cooked, without any burning on the bottom of the pan. It's very versatile as it cooks 2 cups just as well as 24 (the max). The stainless steel on black coloring is also very nice as it matches the rest of my appliances. It's more than worth the $35 price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Rice cook - large but lightweight, February 28, 2006

We make lots of rice - almost everyday. This rice cooker can do white as well as brown. I've made as little as 4 cups, and as much as 7 cups at a time - no problems. When cooking brown rice, just add a tad more water than directed - it turns out perfect. I always make extra - so with the leftovers we can easily have rice pudding !! Only drawback is storage - its large - but lightweight - so if you have the space in a large deep drawer - you wouldn't have to worry about the weight breaking the rollers.

I had been searching for a rice cooker and finally decided upon this one because of the price. (I cook a lot of rice but didn't want a hefty price tag). I love the nonstick bowl. I have had no problem with sticking or burning. The steamer is a great addition, although for most foods you will need more time that it takes the rice to cook. I have had no problems with water spitting and the warm feature keeps my rice perfect! Considering that this product is a Black and Decker and not a well known brand for this specific product, I made my decision based on the two positive reviews. I have discovered that most of the time the littlest known products are the best. Black and Decker has certainly gained my attention with this rice cooker. It is a must have for your kitchen.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a nice Rice cooker, March 1, 2006

It looks very nice, functions like any other rice cooker with an added advantage of the vegetable steamer. But the name of "24-cup" is misleading as it cooks 24-cup cooked rice.

Normally, the standard is to use the number of cups of uncooked rice for measurement to indicate the capacity of the Rice cooker.

I cook rice appx twice a week and have had this machine for nearly 5 months - it just stopped working the other day with no obvious cause. I called the warranty hotline number and was informed that the problem is usually with the detachable power cord. Luckily I still have the receipt and this happened within the 1-yr warranty period, so they will replace it for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good RiceCooker, May 23, 2005
This review is from: Black & Decker RC850 24-Cup Rice Cooker and Vegetable Steamer (Kitchen)
I got this 1 month back and till now I haven't faced any problems. The non-stick container is very good.

It's difficult to clean the lid but still I gave it a 5-star rating since the cooker as such is very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars new technology at a great price, March 8, 2006

I have a 12 yr old rice cooker and needed a new one at a second house. The technology has really changed and this one is excellent. Easy to use, easy to clean, although you can't immerse the electrical parts in water as it is with all of them. It is a good buy and always easier to cook rice in a rice cooker. No mess, no boiling over and it makes great rice and keeps it warm.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, July 8, 2006

I've had this for almost two months now, and we eat rice usually about twice a week. It works well. I make a mixture of brown and white rice, and the cooker has handled that well. The instructions are minimal, so you'll have to do some experimenting. One downside is that the rice isn't really done until the cooker has switched from "cook" to "warm" and been on "warm" for at least 15 minutes, but if you've walked off and left it you don't know how long it's been on warm. The instructions give no cooking times, so you'll have to watch it for a time or two to get a feel for how long it will take to cook. I've also used it to steam vegetables successfully, but the space to hold vegetables is not very big, holding perhaps four cups.
