Just purchased this steam mop this morning from a local store. I went to buy a Eureka Enviro-steam, but there was only this model and a Shark. After reading reviews on Shark, I went with the B&D since I have other products and tools of theirs.
Since it was my first time using it, I thought that I would give my first impression of it. Out of the box, very easy assembly, and clear precise instructions. This mop happens to come with 2 microfiber floor cloths, a water cup (which can attach to the handle of the unit so it doesn' get lost), and a pad for the unit to stand on while moving furniture or other items around. When the unit is stood upright the steam stops flowing and the pad is to protect your surface from the wet microfiber pad. As soon as you tilt the handle again, the steam resumes and you go back to where you left off. There is a dial on the front of the unit where you dial in the type of floor that you are cleaning: stone/tile/wood. This allows the approprite amount of steam for each type of floor.
I steam mopped 2 tile bathrooms, a laminate wood living room/dining room combo, a laminate wood kitchen, a tile foyer, and an epoxy painted cement floor....all on one tank, with water left over. I steam mopped by going with the grain on the laminate, so I did not experience any streaking. The tile floors came up shining, as did the epoxy painted cement, also without streaks. The cord is quite long, so I didn't have to keep moving the plug every 5 minutes. I used both pads since this was the first steaming and a lot of dirt came off of the "clean" floors that were just cleaned yesterday with a vinegar/water solution. I machine washed them in hot (warm water is recommended by B&D) water without fabric softener and they came out looking like new; no noticeable shrinkage in the dryer.
The minor annoyances that I found were: the handle was a little short (I am 5'10"), the handle tube is narrow (not flimsy, but I would like it to have a bit more bulk); but these are definitely easy to live with.
Overall, I am quite happy with this steam mop. And, yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

I really wanted to like this item, but it just didn't do the job for me. My whole first floor consists of laminate flooring. I have owned 2 euroflex monster steam mops in the past 4 years (that did a fabulous job cleaning) but both died on me so I decided to try something new.
Pros:
simple assembly
3 levels of steam outputs (presented on a dial according to the type of floor you are cleaning)
awesome swivel head and tilting handle
you can refill it mid cleaning - no cool down first
water reservoir is located on the back up high rather than on the bottom of the machine (no bending)
cool looking design
cons:
The steam just did not get hot enough (or if it did, the temp dissipated by the time it got through the heavy cleaning pad)
just did not do a good job cleaning - simple sticky spots in kitchen would not come up except with vigorous back and forth
1 steam hole on bottom for steam to escape
left my floor with a weird cloudy film. I could actually buff it off with a towel revealing the shiny floor it should have been
floor was left streaky
I have returned this item and will be getting, yet again, another Monster. I really don't want to because the Monsters seem to just stop working but with a 1 y/o year old and 4 y/o I need SOMETHING and the monster did a MUCH better job actually cleaning and sanitizing my floor. The Monster always left my floor super smooth and shiny, no streaks...and what it really comes down to for me is the effectiveness of cleaning....not the bells and whistles. Though I really hope my next Monster lasts longer.

It is our goal to ensure every user is pleased with our items, so I wanted to follow up on your experience with the Black & Decker Smart Select Steam Mop. The steam reaches a temperature of 190 degrees Celsius/374 degree Fahrenheit to ensure the super-heated steam can kill germs as it cools/condenses upon exiting the mop head--in all three settings (wood/laminate, stone/marble and tile/vinyl). This steam mop should leave a clean, streak-free finish, as other users have noted. Be sure to adjust your steam setting to ensure the right amount of steam is being produced for your floor type (less steam for laminate floors). If there was film/streaking after usage, it could have been due to wax-type buffers/polishers that may have previously been used on the floor. This may also occur if the steam mop is used with chemicals/cleaning agents. Only tap water is needed for this unit--the steam and microfiber pad will do the rest!!

I was excited to try this steam mop. I compared it to the mop i currently use (not a steam mop a BonaKemi WM710013348 Hardwood-Floor Spray Mop with Replaceable Cleaner Cartridge).
CON: HARDWOOD FLOORS:
The bona mop does a superior job on hardwood floors. When there was a spot on the floor, the steam mop required going over it multiple times or worst case scenario--getting down and using the power of elbow grease. Not true with the bona--which moped up spots with ease. I can not comment as to the germ fighting ability--it is very possible that the steam cleaner does a superior job in that area.
I did not have any trouble with streaking with this mop and credit that to the fact to can change the dial settings to the type of flooring you are using it on.
PRO: TILE
My bathrooms are tile. And this did a superb job cleaning the tiles. It was quick and easy and not a hassle to use. (what good is a product if it is too much of a hassle to fill or store??). it made for quick and easy work. This in and of itself is worth it to me to keep and use. I will not use it on the hardwoods though.
INTERESTING THOUGHT not YET tested:
I wonder how this would be in my huge garden (fiberglass) tub, my huge marble shower, or even my regular size fiberglass tubs. I have 2 tubs that don't get used, but i have to still wipe out just because they get dusty. and it is a pain--especially since one is a garden tub and rather large. So i got the idea today, that it might be worth trying this and see how it works. But alas, i'm too tired from my other experiments to try this right now. I will come back and update later.
Overall:
This steam mop is much better than the steam mops that came out a few years ago. If you like steam mopping, i think this is great. If you have tile floors it is especially wonderful. If you have hardwood floors, the bona mopping system is, hands down, superior. it cleans easier, gets up dirt spots better and does a great job. With that said--we now have two different mops in the house. Bona for the hardwood and This one for tile. And they will both be put to regular use.
The dial is easy to adjust to change what type of floor you are mopping. It is easy to fill. Easy to put together and easy to store.
UPDATE 9/9/11--after a few months of use, we are not as happy as in the beginning. We are still using it, however, the design is not as good as on some other units. The actual mop pad doesn't have any support in the center--that is where the steam comes out--but because there is no support, it also doesn't make contact with the floor--so you end up having dirt marks all around the edges from where it cleaned the floor and the center is virtually clean and doesn't seem to have picked up any dirt. We are still happy, overall with the cleaning job--but feel that there could be a better and more efficient design.
12/27/11--Update--Steam mop has completely broken and doesn't produce steam at all. Very disappointed. Would not recommend this product at all and changed my star rating to 1.

Works as advertised.
We have used the cleaner on our laminate and ceramic tile floors. It's very easy to use and does an excellent job. It comes with three pads that are washable and easy to change.

Lasted less than 5 uses before dying a smoky, smelly death
