5.0 out of 5 stars 1 year of slicing roasts and still carving
This knife works nicely. The blades have remained sharp after carving roasted chicken and turkey, roast beef, and yes even cakes over the past year.

The handle wipes off cleanly after use and doesn't suffer from the extreme electric motor vibration that so many electric knives have. The handle stays cool as well. I don't have anything bad to say about this...

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
We wanted to buy the B&D "ergo" electric knife, but we could not locate one in time for Xmas, so we bought the EK800.

The first time we used it, the knife sliced a standing rib roast into beautiful thin slices. The second time we used it (on a baked ham) food stated slipping in between the two blades. This is the problem with the EK800, the slicing blade...

This is the problem with the EK800, the slicing blade is actually two thin blades that sort of lock together. When we attempt to slice meats, thin slivers of meat get in between the two blades, making slicing impossible. We thought it might be our "technique", but we tried it on several more roasts nd no matter how we use it, food gets between the blades. It's too late to return it, so we'll keep it for slicing homemade bread, but we'll be looking for another electric knife for carving meats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cook's Illustrated rates this #1, December 5, 2004

The only other reviewer gave this only two start because they said that meat getting in between the two blades rendered the knife useless for cutting meats. I am going to purchase this knife based on the following review from Cook's Illustrated and I quote word for word: "The Black & Decker EK800 Slice Right is every bit as good as its predecessor (the Ergo). It exeduted all tasks perfectly."

I've used this knife at least once a week every week since we purchased this knife. We primarily use it to slice homemade sourdough bread and homemade wheat bread, but have also used it with great success slicing turkey breast for T-day, and sticky baked goods, such as fruit-nut breads, too.

We always hand-wash the blades, and they've held up very well, not dulling even now.

This is a much better choice than the Cuisinart, whose handle was too large to be comfortable or safe (my wife couldn't use that knife at all).

3.0 out of 5 stars not durable, April 20, 2010
This review is from: Black & Decker EK800 Slice-Right Electric Knife with Slicing Guide (Kitchen)
After one year of use the blade is still very sharp however food does get caught between the blades including bread. It is not very durable. It got overly hot when slicing more than one loaf of bread at a time and on meat or heavy foods the gears slipped. Now it has completely stopped running the blades. I took it apart and the blades are ran my a plastic gear. The teeth were worn down. It is a good knife for light jobs and cuts very cleanly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as expected, February 13, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker EK800 Slice-Right Electric Knife with Slicing Guide (Kitchen)
This knife was a great idea! The knife cuts great, but the guard is so flimsy you still need alot of skill to cut your bread slices evenly. The guard bends too easily and once you've cut one slice uneven it's hard to get it back on track and cut the rest of the slices uniform. Guess I will have to keep practicing or go back to the good old plastic guides!
