I have had the spacemaker undercounter can opener for four years and really never liked the way it operated. The blade finally broke and I needed another one to replace it so I chose the same model, only because I like the way it looks under the counter and it will fit into the already existing holes in the cabinet. Black and Decker should test this product more extensively before selling it. The guide never guided anything and the blade never operated correctly on irregular shaped cans. I am sorry that no other brand fit in the existing holes because if they did, I would not buy this model. This is the only product from Black and Decker that I find fault with.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't even think about it!!, September 20, 2001

Black & Decker -- Shame On You! This can opener hasn't worked right since after about the first 7 or 8 times. Unfortunately, the period expired when I could return it, and now I'm stuck with it. It's not designed well, but it's very pretty. I bought the thing so I could have clear countertops, and I do, but I can't open any cans. What a disappointing product! If there was a "minus stars" I would rate it in that column.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!, August 4, 2001

I use this opener daily, and I have had trouble with it from day one. Its hard to get started, once it finishes cutting the lid it 'jerks' to a stop (so those cans of beans splash liquid everywhere). The magnetic lever that holds the lid won't stay up out of the way; most of the time I have great difficulty removing the can from the can opener (so even more liquid splashes everywhere); and last night, it wouldn't stop rotating! This opener is not for the weak as it takes some strength to operate the lever. Most of the time I am using the old hand can opener that I thankfully kept. I am not buying a B & D opener again!

I purchased this can opener about a year ago.Let me tell you, that it is the worst piece of garbage that I have ever bought. It is extremely difficult to open cans with this item. You end up with more food on the floor or counter than you actually consume.Shame on Black and Decker.

We purchased one of these several years ago. It worked fine for about 1 1/2 years then the motor started to make noises. A few weeks later, it stopped working entirely. We bought another unit to replace that one about 2 years ago. It worked fine until about a week ago when the mechanism that pushes the blade into the can stopped working..

This is not a bad opener and we like it while it worked. It's compact and works reasonably well. I also like the fact that it rotates up when you're not using it so that it looks a lot neater. However I can't afford to be replacing them every couple of years. If Black and Decker would have made this unit more durable I think that this would have been a fine product. We are looking for a replacement now but it will probably not be this model.

This can opener is the pits. It is so sorry I can't even rate it. One star is too good for it. On 99% of the cans I've tried to open with this piece of junk, the blade comes out after about 1/2 in. into cutting. You have to force the blade out to release the can and start over for another 1/2 in. This goes on until you get all the way around the can. I am right now looking for another can opener.

1.0 out of 5 stars followup to my oct.30, 2000 review., February 22, 2001

on october 30, 2000, i gave this can opener a very good review. it is now my SAD duty to report to you that this can opener BROKE after having opened 7 large cans and NO LONGER WORKS due to a bad design.

once you get the cutting blade over the rim of the can so that the blade can cut the lid, you CAN NOT remove the can from the opener because the blade holds the can next to the opener and will not let you remove the can. it is difficult to place the can so that the blade will go OVER the rim in the first place as i stated in my first review. once over the rim, it won't let go. the wheel that turns the can, no longer functions. sorry!

i purchased this opener to open TALL, 7 POUND CANS. it opens these cans without problems. therefore, i am happy with this opener! however there are some things that you need to understand before you purchase one.

i do not feel that this is a hideaway can opener because to hide it, you must install it under your kitchen cabinet. this opener requires installation. it can only be installed from the top of the opener with four screws. my counter tops are ceramic and i was not going to drill four holes in it to mount this opener. also, if you mount it under your counter top, when you open it DOWN, to use it, you will be very close to the floor. i did not want to get down on my knees with a 7 pound can to open. in addition, there are NO electrical outlets underneath my cabinets. they are all on top of the counter.

therefore, i mounted my opener underneath one of the cabinets that hang from the ceiling. the mounthing screws are inside the cabinet and the opener is below the cabinet in sight. however, it is out of the way and easy to use. and it is not unattractive because it closes up when not in use.

there is ONE key to easy use of this opener on large cans. i use both hands to place the can in the right position for the CUTTING BLADE to go down OVER the RIM of the can. to do this, i tilt the bottom front part of the can upwards slightly. ONCE the blade is INSIDE the rim of the can, it opens the can very easily. it may seem complcated, but once you open your first can you will be happy with your opener as i am with mine. leon.

1.0 out of 5 stars junk!!!, July 5, 2001

Blade doesn't pop up after can is opened, I have to unplug it to get it to stop. Occassionally, when the release pops up, it splashes the contents (juices) on the wall & down side of cabinets. It does not open large cans. I would NOT reccommend this product to anyone!

This hideaway opener is great. It creates little or no metal scraps and is quick and easy to use because of its under the shelf accessibility.
