1.0 out of 5 stars Worst can opener I have ever owned!!!
Bought this to replace a cheap Rivan can opener that had a broken lid-retaining magnet. Biggest mistake. It routinely drops cans - even light ones like soup and mushrooms. Difficult to attach the can to it - and even harder to clean. Aviod this model at all costs.

Where's my Ipod plug in?
Far too often today's machines are called upon to offer much more than the single purpose originally desired. Usually, as with all overly-ambitious attempts at designing these multi-tasking devices, compromises are made. Now, unless you missed Communications Skills 101, you know a compromise is a lose-lose solution, not a win-win, as both parties agree to give up something in order to reach an agreement. Whether man or machine, this canon perseveres despit our developing a tendency to hedge our every bet.

Old school is sometimes still the best school.
Unfortunately, this discovery is often made only after we've burned down the old one and replaced it with a "new and improved" version. Some consumers just refuse to catch on that "new and improved" is "advertiser speak" for "You NEED to buy a new one. Yours is OLD [beside, we've already spent all the money you paid us for that one]". I never cared for John B. Watson and I doubt he cared about anything but himself.

Sometimes, you just have to let go.
To the poster that claims cans must be supported, perhaps they lacked the courage or faith necessary to discover that this appliance is perfectly capable of holding substantial cans without assistance. Just place the can position, press down on the lever once and release, the motor and cutter do exactly what these were intended to do without complaint--all but the oddest of shaped tins--then safely stops when the lid is completely sliced through, and the can to sit there locked in place patiently waiting for you to lift the lever and release the now perfectly opened can. The lid is held in place by a magnet which is attached to the lever assembly avoiding any cross-contamination.

Breaking up is *not* hard to do.
Cleaning is a breeze as a handy unobtrusive lever releases the entire one-piece cutter assembly and exposes any nasties in those previously hard-to-get-to places. Perfection in simplicity; a previous tenet abandoned long ago. Definately old school and definately the quality and simplicity today's products increasingly lack.

AX~

5.0 out of 5 stars Worked Great For Years, October 7, 2006

I bought one of these twenty years ago and it took this long for it to finally stop working. I find it easy to insert the cans. It works great if you follow the directions. It's not made to support the cans you must cradle the can as it goes around. Cleaning is simple because the blade and all pops out so you can stick them in the dishwasher or the sink. It's a good buy.

I have never had a better can opener. This is my second Black & Decker spacemaker and I would have no other. It is easy to install and very stable. It uses no counter space. I open big quart cans with no problems. It is always convenient, quiet and performs as advertised.

I've been having this for about a month now & it works beautifully. It's very convenient to have it right by the stove when I need it. Installing was very simple as well.

Murderous to install, but sleek looking once you're done reading the small print and have your new opener ensconced under the cabinet. Often the can doesn't catch on the first try; when it does, it whirls around in a poetically lovely circle, the lid perfectly caught by the magnet as you stand back in awe. In the past, I've favored Black & Decker without reservation. I am losing my enthusiasm.

Has trouble with some steel cans. Doesn't cut smoothly (a lot of ripples). Have to reposition can frequently.

You need to be pretty handy to mount this under the cabinet - and you need lots of tools, but once that was done, it works really well.
