4.0 out of 5 stars I've been happy with this toaster.
I guess I was lucky. I got mine for free. I had a coupon, and found it on sale, so I didn't pay anything for it.

I've had the toaster for several months now, and I use it once or twice every week. It makes a buzzing noise for 3 or 4 seconds after it is turned on, but that is not really a problem.

I use it for toast, taco shells, hot ham &...

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Product in Our Wedding Registry, November 28, 2006
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO210 Toast-R-Oven, White (Kitchen)
My wife and I put a white Toast-R-Oven from Black & Decker on our wedding registry, thinking it'd make a solid addition to our kitchen. Within the 1-yr warranty, our toaster oven stopped working. The button for making toast had ceased to depress and hold, requiring us to manually push down the button if we wanted to make toast. B&D had us snip the electrical cord and mail it back to them (I suppose to make sure we weren't just asking for another unit while keeping our current one).

We received the replacement a few weeks later, but this one also broke. Unfortunately for us, the 1-yr warranty had just expired. This time, the problem was the heating element on the roof of the unit. One of the elements (a rod-like tube that goes lengthwise along the toaster) started giving off sparks and then collapsed. Instead of staying pressed against the top of the unit, one of the rods had partially fallen down, bending at an angle. You might think this was a case of user-error, perhaps by the owner accidentally ramming too big a chunk of food into the toaster and cracking the heating element... but I am positive that neither one of us touched the topside heating element. (We typically used it to toast Eggos and bread, and used the pan to warm up leftover pizza, taco shells, cookies.)

The oven no longer works since the topside no longer generates heat. The bottom still gets hot, but a funny smell permeates when the oven is activated, probably because of the broken heating element on top.

Overall, this device is of such poor quality that I would not pay a single cent for another. This is the WORST item on our registry -- a piece of junk that causes headaches and frustration. I will NEVER buy another toaster oven from Black & Decker, and I am afraid to try any of their other kitchenware. I just can't trust their workmanship or design.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lots of burnt toast and 1 fire, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO210 Toast-R-Oven, White (Kitchen)
Very disappointed and finally too nervous to ever use it again.

Not long after our warranty period expired the toaster button was getting harder and harder to use. Even on the "light" setting for toast it would turn quite black before shutting off. Eventually, we couldn't trust it enough without standing right next to it -- It simply stopped turning off using the toasting function.

The final straw was when we got distracted just long enough for my "medium" piece of toast to turn into a flaming chunk of charcoal-bread.

IF you buy, we strongly suggest a "Purchase with Caution" and certainly be sure to watch it like hawk at ALL times!

1.0 out of 5 stars It failed, March 10, 2007

The toaster oven failed after a half year's use. The product was still under warrantee. The manufacturer, Applica/Black & Decker, offered to replace the unit, or let me choose another B&D product in place of the toaster oven. I am looking for something I want or need.

Even before the TRO210 stopped working, my wife and I were dissatisfied with it. The quartz heating elements are slow and take a long time to heat up the oven. When they are on at full power, the food is burned. My wife did not like the oven pan and replaced it with an old one she had saved from another unit.

Unfortunately, most other toaster ovens on the market today have the same heating systems. Check for quartz heating elements that are about 1/2" in diameter, and stay away.

After the TRO210 failed, my wife bought a slightly more expensive toaster oven that has the old, reliable calrod heating elements, and electromechanical controls. So far, after only a week's use, we are happy with the product. We're hoping for the best.

1.0 out of 5 stars I prefer the real classic to this "Classic", March 22, 2008

This review is from: Black & Decker TRO210 Toast-R-Oven, White (Kitchen)
After 14 years, our old BD toaster oven broke down (a sad day). We basically wanted the same thing - dependable, effective, easy to use (for us and the kids), and able to fit under the counter. We assumed we'd get that with this newer model. Alas, we were wrong.

It took much much longer to toast bread. There is no under-the-counter feature. You can't have it set on the same "Medium" each time - there's a dial that you have to turn to the precise spot each time you use it. My kids never got the hang of it. So we were lucky if we actually got toast when not watching the machine like a hawk. Plus, there is no safety feature that turns off the heating element when the door is open (did I mention I have kids? They're very helpful, but often curious). Then there's the constant ticking, which will make noise even if the toaster is not plugged in...meaning I waited a few times for toast that had no chance of heating up.

After about a week, we realized it was not a suitable replacement for our old-reliable, and we took it back. Now we're on the hunt for a good toaster oven...again. So, I do not recommend this to any consumer, but I do recommend to Black and Decker that they bring back the good-ol-toaster oven of old.

1.0 out of 5 stars didn't get hot, short-circuited my kitchen, and ticked like a bomb, January 15, 2008

I think I said it all in the headline, but I just opened the box last night and plugged the brand-new unit in, all ready to toast some pine nuts. I waited for it to get hot...and waited, and waited. It got slightly warm, though the heating elements never changed color. On both toasting and baking functions: no heat - but plenty of loud annoying ticking from the timer dials. Oh, and then the power strip decided that it had had enough of this piece of junk, too, and switched off. I couldn't get it to turn back on for 5 minutes. This toaster oven is going right back to the store. I'm surprised; I've had Black & Decker stuff before that worked great, and for a long time too.

I use it for toast, taco shells, hot ham & cheese sandwiches, heating up frozen hamburger buns, and cooking fries.

I wish there was a way to install it under the counter, but I haven't had any trouble with it.

I tried to replace my old BD toaster oven and found one on line that seemed to match the under-the-counter hood that holds it in place and is still for sale. Alas, they don't make the toaster that fits that..safety concerns...
the previous toaster was great, but I returned this one as I needed a space-saver and I bought a cheapie toaster only that uses up less valuable counter space!
