Door exploded!,
By
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO760B Toast-R-Oven (Kitchen)
We bought this oven at Target about 18 months ago. Oven worked OK, not great. It toasted bread fine but more "cooking" type functions, such as heating up frozen garlic bread, seemed to take forever. The biggest problem, we later learned however, is that the design of the curved glass door seems to be inherently unsafe. My wife was using the toaster to heat something up the other day when the glass door spontaneously EXPLODED, not just shattered, spraying glass up to 5 feet away. Fortunately my wife was not injured but the food she was making on the stove nearby was ruined due to all the glass debris. Needless to say, the toaster was "toast".We called Black and Decker to report the issue and they referred us to a different company that manufactures the product for them. The other company (I cannot recall the name) said they no longer manufacture this model (go figure) and they were unwilling to offer a replacement of another kind. Both companies, B&D and the contract manufucaturer, were more or less unconcerned about the safety issue. Beware of this model. I'm sure there are much better ovens available from other manufacturers for a similar price.

Most of us have probably had a Black & Decker Toaster Oven in our kitchens at some time or another. They've gotten the job done for me in the past, but I am now realizing that the low-end models are lacking in many respects, especially overall quality and design. I bought this one to replace a cheap Toastmaster model that lasted two years, which I suppose is the expected lifespan for cheap toasters these days. Some flaws in this model are making themselves apparent after a month or so of use.Flaw #1: The oven timer, which has a cheap feel to it, gets stuck and stops ticking a few seconds after being turned on (meaning the oven is on, but the timer is not counting down). Twisting the dial sometimes helps the timer to "catch" and start ticking again, but if often stops a few seconds later. This means that when using the oven, say, for heating dinner, you have to keep an eye on your food so it doesn't burn. This flaw makes the timer function seriously useless. Design Flaw #1: The heating elements turn off automatically when the door is open. This in itself is not a bad thing necessarily, but when you close the door again, you have to push the door in tightly so that a metal piece on the side clicks, starting the heating process again. If you're not paying attention, you can close the door without noticing that the heating process is still paused. Silly design. On the positive side, the heating elements heat up fairly quickly and heat food well. Toast comes out evenly browned. There are two levels available to place the oven rack; a lower one for heating larger items, and a middle position, which is the one you'll use most. Bottom line though- this is likely the last toaster I will buy from Black & Decker. The quality and features that one should expect to find in a heavily used appliance are just not present here.

Lousy toaster,

I like the look and feel of the this toaster oven. Was excited to receive it for a present. But can you imagine designing a toaster oven that doesn't toast well!? The top of the bread was fine, but the underside was only partially toasted. I am so unimpressed with Black and Decker products. Like Chrysler (at least of old), they have nice designs but are poorly executed.

If, like me, you've ever had a trusty Black & Decker tool or small home appliance, and like me, you may be thinking it's safe to buy this because of the B&D nameplate, STOP. This looks attractive, it's capacious and seems a great value, but it simply does not work. When I first got it out of the box, I noticed that there is a large gap along the top of the glass door, which, true to my suspicions, allowed a great deal of heat to escape (this wasn't a defect -- rather, a ridiculous design flaw). Sure enough, everthing took twice as long to cook (e.g. salmon fillets in foil packets took 45 minutes, at "500" -- yeah, well, that's what the DIAL said, but don't believe it -- instead of 23 mins @ 425 as in my old toaster oven or regular oven). And plain old toast? Fuggedaboudit. You have to first allow the oven to fully heat up -- about 10 minutes -- then put the bread in....and then wait some more. If you put the bread in before the oven pre-heats, it hardens to a brick in the slowly gathering (leaking) heat, so you end up with something like Melba toast. And, the dials are awful; extremely cheap, lightweight plastic, mounted loosely and flimsily, affording no confident, positive feel that one has selected the right setting. Insult atop injury, the top element quit working after about 5 months. That's when I discovered how lousy B&D's customer service was; every bit as sorry as this product. I bought this to replace a B&D toaster oven that had served me reliably, well, & often for almost 10 years until it finally cried Uncle. Wow, has B&D ever gone down the tubes in that time. Run away from this product -- far, far away.

Toaster that does not toast.,

I bought this toaster a week ago, i liked it becuase it is big on the inside, so i can bake a nice piece of salmon or broil a steak, but so far i have use it for toast, but it takes forever! i think its because the heating elements are too far from the toast, and mine also the door does not close all the way. Mine have not explode yet, but i am not going to wait for it. I am going to return it Monday.
