I was pretty frightened to try this toaster, but I had one several years ago and after trying a much more expensive model that took at least 10 minutes to toast bread, I decided to try it, despite all the bad reviews. And for $40, what more do you want? The oven does indeed turn off when the bell rings and can toast frozen bread in about 5 minutes, slower than a regular toaster, but much faster than the high end countertop oven that I tried. I waited about a month to write this review, because I was expecting to see flames coming from the unit, but so far it's been fine. I've used this to reheat pork chops and steak and it has worked quite well and I really like the hooks that pull the rack out about an inch when the door is opened.

We had a Black and Decker toaster oven for 10 years. I recently gave it to a friend who needed one and I got a new B&D toaster oven. Why not? The other still is in good working order, I trusted the new one to be a good product as well.

I have the same complaints as everyone else here. It burns everything no matter what you set the timer/temp to, so basically you have to stand there the entire time and watch to make sure it doesn't burn. I also have problems with the door, I can't get the door open without the entire appliance tipping over. I have to use an oven mitt to hold the appliance down while opening the door because the outside gets too hot. The appliance does not shut off when you open the door which is a feature the old toaster had.

Overall this is the worst product. Of course, I threw out the box and receipt the first day I got it because I was confident this product would be great but its not. Don't buy this product.

Very slow toasting times and timer doesn't shut off during light toast setting. This was purchased after returning a Black/Decker Model No. TRO392 which overheated and started smoking(Electrical wires were burning) during first toast cycle. Two defective new units seem to indicate that B&D needs to improve their quality control. Unfortunately after having B&D Toaster Ovens for years, I now will purchase a different brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars *Just* set my toast on fire., December 16, 2009

I received this thing as a 'house warming' gift. How ironic.

My smoke alarm just went off, and thank god it did. I was making toast inside this thing, got distracted, and it didn't shut off.

The whole condo was filled with smoke and the toast was literally on fire. I have never seen toast as black as my heart until tonight, and I'm pissed.

I pray that no one has their life destroyed by one of these things.

I can see that I'm the only one here so far that has NO problem with this toaster oven.Wow
Can I be that lucky!!

I just bought this at Lowes for $29.99.
Everything toasted perfectly even, and I have to say , I was surprised it worked that good. The Bell went off with a Ding at the end of toasting, and the toaster turned off.
I gave this a trial run, and I made english muffens, Garlic bread, and those tasty round breads from Costco. Everything toasted very even.

I had this toaster years ago, and never had a problem with it either.I don't know what happened to it though!
This is actually nice looking.
Not as big as other toaster ovens.(I wanted a small one) I did like that when you open the door the rack comes out a bit.

To get the bread out, I just put a plate under the rack and take a fork and move it onto the plate, Or use tongs.
Not a big deal. Don't put your fingers inside it's HOT. Duh.

I only bought this to make garlic bread for a couple of people, so I would not have to turn my oven Broiler on.

I have a $400.00 hand made English Rowlett profesional toaster for 4 pieces of bread. It looks great, but I have to say, I think this toasted just as even!
This toaster oven does take longer to toast.

I won't leave this sitting on my counter. I don't like allot stuff like this sitting out, and I don't plan on using it very oven.
But its not bad looking..It looks like stainless.

So far I cannot complain.
If something happens with this, I will be back to review it again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the same quality as older B&D toaster ovens, November 30, 2009
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO964 Classic Countertop 1200-Watt Toaster Oven (Kitchen)
I would not recommend this toaster oven.

I, too, had an old, little B&D toaster oven that worked a charm. It was small and efficient and did a great job of toasting, broiling and generally heating things up.

We replaced our toaster oven with what I thought was the updated version of our older model when we started having electrical problems with the old one. I knew I didn't want a modern, mega-toaster oven, many of which take ages just to heat themselves up, much less the food.

I have been pretty disappointed in this model.

The most aggravating parts of the model are the controls. The upper control allows you to select a range from Warm to 400/450, and then Toast, and then Broil. It's a little knob that twists around and doesn't have any 'notches' in it, so it's easy to miss the Toast setting. Stupid.

Then the other problem, the one everyone else is complaining about, is the lower control. It is a timer that allows you to choose, in increasing order, Light, Medium, Dark, 10, 20, 30, etc. I don't know who ever uses it for any real length of time. I generally use the 10 minute or less setting and I stay there. If you don't watch the food, it will burn very quickly. The fire hazard that everyone keeps discussing is that if you set it for a very low setting, the timer knob will get close to the end but won't ever 'Ding!' and therefore will just stay on without ticking down the minutes any more. Not cool.

And, if you turn the damn thing off a little too eagerly in a fit of frustration, you can turn the small knob just a little too far past OFF to ALWAYS ON. Um, who needs an toaster oven with an 'Always on' option when 10 minutes burns everything? I have walked away from the thing on more than one occasion only to discover that I turned it 'Always on' rather than 'Off'. How reassuring.

This toaster oven is also incapable of making toast, which doesn't really bother me as I use it more like an oven than a toaster, but it may be important to you. I think the problem is the controls plus the different distances between the food and the heating elements.

Additionally, the door can be a little tricky. The door has a hinge that automatically pulls the rack out a little ways, and it's poorly designed, so it can stick when opening or closing.

So, this little guy is not the little guy they were selling in the 80s and 90s. It's an "improved" piece of crap and I look forward to replacing mine soon.

1.0 out of 5 stars burns food easily, July 4, 2009

We bought this little B&D toaster oven to replace one that we bought years ago and absolutely loved. We have had this one for a couple of months, and absolutely hate it. As others have reported, it does not turn off when it dings. More annoying, though, is that the top heating element burns any food taller than 1/2". I tried contacting B&D to see whether ours was somehow defective with the top shielding, and I got back a very generic response indicating they had no idea what I was talking about. This is one of those unfortunate incidences where they took a good product and ruined it by "improvements".

1.0 out of 5 stars It's headed for the Goodwill!, November 6, 2008
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO964 Classic Countertop 1200-Watt Toaster Oven (Kitchen)
My primary reason for buying this was to make toast. It holds two slices and cooks the bread only on the right side, so if you want it cooked evenly you have to rotate the bread half way through cooking. Also, if you want to cook another item right after you have just used it the heating elements wont come on. I'm guessing it must be some kind of safety feature that it has to completely cool down before you can use it again.
I have broiled Costco frozen egg rolls in it and it worked great. All in all I would say that if you're just useing it to reheat food it would work fine, but as for me I'm on to the next toaster oven.

Sad to say, the above poor reviews weren't kidding. The timer ticking continues for a time after the toast cycle is "done", allowing it to burn while you wait for the DING to alert you. I put a frozen piece of bread on "medium", and burned it to a char by walking away. Seems that the wattage is really hot too. Did I mention the uneven browning of toast? Yes, I will learn the hard way to trust my reviewer friends, as I shop here. (no complaints about the vendor)

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Do It., June 24, 2009
This review is from: Black & Decker TRO964 Classic Countertop 1200-Watt Toaster Oven (Kitchen)
I bought this from Macy's and read some mixed reviews. I thought I also checked some on Amazon when I was doing some price comparisons. Maybe I read the wrong model or read that one good review out of the many bad ones. Well, bottom line is you should not buy this. Do not waste your time. I agree they should do a recall. I tested the toast setting for the first time with nothing inside to make sure it worked properly. When the timer hit light toast I put a piece of bread in it and long before the ding went off it started to turn black and burn along the edges. I threw the toast away and was going to try another setting when the door refused to open. Two people could not open it without fear of breaking the machine. When it completely cooled I managed to stick my small hand through the crack of the door to jam it out and get it ready to go back in the box for a full return. Imagine if the burnt toast was still inside or your kids got to it and it started burning. And when you pull the wire out of the socket which does create a spark, the timer is still going. Ahh! Pretty annoying, scary and time consuming.
