Editorial Reviews

Review

Help your kids explore their imaginations with a well-built tree house. Schmidt (Decorating with Architectural Details) presents a well-organized guide to the basics of tree house building. Good photos and clear, detailed instructions lead readers through six designs. There is an informative section on what species of tree is best to "host" your structure as well as cautionary information on building codes and zoning. This is a solid book, but it lacks the flare and spirit of David and Jeanie Stiles's Treehouses & Playhouses You Can Build. Still, Schmidt provides great instruction and a solid foundation. Recommended. - Library Journal March 1, 2007

Book Description

Treehouses Anyone Can Build!  Black & Decker Build A Treehouse! that is a basic yet complete presentation of how to plan, design, and build a safe, fun treehouse structure for children. The book begins with an inspirational chapter showing the many treehouse variations that are possible. Next, a chapter on basic techniques shows how the essential treehouse platform can be built and secured in any tree configuration-nestled high among the branches or designed so the trunk passes up through the center, and every variation in-between Then, separate chapters show the techniques for adding walls, roofs, ladders, access hatches and accessories. The final chapter of the book gives complete plans for the treehouses, from the very simple to the surprisingly sophisticated.

I bought 5 tree house books from Amazon last year. The others are very inspirational, kid of like [...] who makes the worlds coolest treehouses. This book gives great instruction for the common man. Buy multiple books when planning your treehouse, but own this one before you build. b

This was the exact type of information I was seeking out before starting on a treehouse for our kids. We needed to know a few key elements in building and planning. Since trees grow in all sorts of shapes, widths and sizes- I needed to know how to plan for the basics in safety and building as we build organically as we go along. This book had great tips and included plans for tree houses and where to start. I liked how it always kept safety aspects in mind because this was the biggest concern when we started discussing our treehouse.

I bought two books based on Amazon reviews and found this to be the better of the two. I built the treehouse off of the designs shown in the book. I wish it was even more "cookbook" like, as I am relatively new at this stuff and it took me a while to figure out how to do it.

This book gives some good ideas and basic treehouse construction information. I saw what looked like the same book at Lowes, but it's an updated version with more plans for doors, windows, etc. I would recommend getting the updated version of the book instead of this one.

Found it to be helpful for starting the project, i.e. planning, materials, designs, etc. But once I started building, I realized the instructions were very generic. They make statements, like 'align end joists'. That's simple and obvious, but how do you do that??? Measurements and orientation get very difficult when you're 8 feet in the air. There needs to be details on how to properly measure, and the tricks of the trade. I know there's got to be an easier way than what I was doing...THAT's why I needed the book and it failed me.
