The LED display lets you know when the battery is fully charged.
The Smart Battery Charger is ideal for any 12 volt lead-acid battery types, including those that power cars, boats, lawn mowers, RVs, ATVs and more.
It uses a 3-stage automatic high-frequency charging technology to build the battery back up to its normal output level, making it more efficient at charging than conventional model chargers.
Built-in Safety Precautions
The Smart Battery Charger also has a spark-resistant reverse hook-up and overcharge protection circuit built into it to insure that the clamps are not accidentally affixed to the opposite terminals, which would damage the battery. The automatic float mode monitoring tells the unit when the battery is ready to avoid overcharging.

Interestingly, I was Googling this charger and "fan" and this Amazon review site popped up. I see it's happened to others as well. A fan failure after a bit over a year shows very poor quality, especially since mine is not an isolated incident. How many people had this problem but bought them elsewhere or who don't post reviews? And the warranty issues are as I would expect.
While I have the floor, my policy on warranties is: If the item is expensive or I don't trust it, I go to a big-box/any-local store where I can return it for 6 months, no matter what. Other than that, on the internet, there is no warranty. This item is inexpensive; I can try a Schumacher next.
There's no way I'm going to find a box, pack it, trudge to a shipper/P.O., pay to ship it, hope.
Anything I buy on the internet is a done deal.
As an engineer, I'm going to open mine up and see if I can find a similar fan on DigiKey.
If I find one (and think of it), I'll post it here. Be prepared to perform surgery.
I've seen previous posts stating that the fan is only to cool the CPU. I doubt it. As light as this is and the with amps it can deliver, this is obviously using switcher technology which definitely has actual heat sinks or, probably, cooling surfaces (still heat sinks). A transformer-based charger would weigh MUCH more. The CPU would probably be the last thing to fail and the power semiconductors or any copper would be more likely. But, no matter; if anything fails, it's toast.Read more ›

The unit that goes to the desert had a fan failure. I replaced it for $[...]. Good enough for me. The newer unit I rarely use that looks brand new just cooked two batteries. I didn't realize the charger went bad. I thought the batteries were junk cause they are old. But after swapping chargers I find that the newer unit was blowing max amps and boiling the crap out of the batteries... It could have started a fire for sure. Not happy with this.
Amazon has always said 2 year warranty on this unit like many retailers... but the B&D site says 5 years. So I called the service center that confirmed it is 5 Years Home User Warranty. They just happen to be located by my office so I'll drop it off tomorrow to the service center. They DON'T REPAIR them. They said B&D will send me a replacement unit directly within 14 days to my home no charge.
I loved the functionality of these chargers and I'll keep using them. Disappointed with the meltdown and worry about what if I had not been here to find the charger smoking my car. But thrilled with the warranty and service. In the future, I'll be pulling my batteries from my cars and charge them in a safe location. When I ran a shop years ago this was SOP for my guys. No burned down cars because of a bad battery or charger on my watch. I just need to practice what I preach.
And the really nice thing about buying here at Amazon... I don't even need to dig out my original receipt because I can print it from Amazon's records. NICE !
