1.0 out of 5 stars Low power for the replacement 3.6v I ordered, March 30, 2003

The new Versapak battery I recieved was weaker than the origional five year old battery I still had. One of the two origional batteries quit working and I ordered a new one. The new one delivered only about half the torque to my screw driver and did not last long even after overnight charge. Perhaps I could have just recieved a defective one. I like the B&D cordless driver and will try again to order another one.

The problem is that the batteries run dead almost immediately, so I've ended up having to have a lot of spares charged for those occasiona when I need a tool for more than a few minutes. It's still cheaper than buying a higher end cordless, and since the tools are so light, for small jobs they are a lot nicer to use.

I've got a number of the Versapack tools including the drill, screwdriver, and mini-circular saw. For small jobs like putting some screws in or cutting thin pieces of wood, they're fine. Anything that will take more than a few minutes of use will require more batteries because they die so quickly. This line would have been a lot nicer if the batteries were more powerful. Also, it would be nice if the chargers told you when the batteries were fully charged.

I presentlly am keeping these batteries as a spaare. But having used the product before I'll tell you they don't have a long life and are expensive, based on the initial cost of the product that these battaries operate.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surpirsed, January 6, 2007

I had been toying with the idea of getting new batteries or upgrading my system to the newer stronger B&D cordless tools, which really did not make economic sense considering I am just a Harry Homeowner and do not need professional grade tools. The batteries I had were about 5 years old and were not holding a charge for more than a couple of hours, so I ordered a new set.

Surprise!

I should have ordered these a year ago. I did not realize the older batteries had been slowly losing effectiveness. I charged up the new ones and the cordless drill hadn't run that fast in a long time. The newer ones have held their strong charge for over a month without use and when I used them today the were right on the money with plenty of power.

It is a good deal if you have this system, and if you are even getting suspicious that it might be time to replace the old batteries don't wait and do it now. As to the problems with life expectancy that some of the other reviewers mention, I would say my batteries lasted 4 years before needing replaced, and I used the dustbuster or cordless drill frequently.

I bought several versapack powered home and garden tools when they came out.I had a dozen of these NICAD batteries and all died within a year.No wonder B&D discontinued this line of tools. VP batteries are hard to find and are expensive.I have put aside all these tools rather than keep buying these batteries at high prices. It is complete waste of money.

I've had to throw out dust busters in the past due to the batteries failing. This was a great idea by B&D and everything is running like new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ni Cad RECHARGEABLE Battery, August 16, 2008
By

I have a Black & Decker Power Screwdriver which I have used for years--since 1999, for electronics. Of Course, the batteries have not lasted that long, and I have replaced them a time or two.

I have let them run down to where they lost some power, then recharged them fully. Do NOT let them run down completely, or they may be damaged by the high current demand of the appliance when run at low voltage. They can overheat at low voltage and high current drain, and lose some of their lifespan. The appliance can also overheat with low voltage and high current drain. If the battery is uncomfortably warm to the hand, it is being overworked, either low voltage or too high duty cycle.

If you do not use them regularly, they will lose some of their charge by infinitesimal internal leakage--that is just the way batteries work. When you familiarize yourself with your machine, you will recognize when the battery loses power, as the machine will have less power than usual. Check the batteries in a regular maintenance schedule, then you will know when it is time to recharge.

If you do use them regularly, keep one fully charged, then when the other runs down, install the fully charged battery, and recharge the other.
