If you operate it properly they work well.

It isn't really worth the frustration though if you are looking to use it more than once in a blue moon.

The vacuum will start even though you don't need it for the first step.

I admit I cheaped out and bought this instead of the Tilia. The Black and Decker was well within my budget so I figured I'd give it a try.

The unit came with a manual, a DVD, a roll of 11" bagging material, and the sealer itself.

Setup is easy, plug it in and away you go.

you do need to use two hands to press on the top to ensure a tight seal. When you start making a bag you only put it in far enough to make a seal. Then press down on the unit to initiate the cycle. The vacuum will start even though you don't need it for the first step. Don't worry about pressing too hard until the RED light comes on, that is the sealing cycle. Now press firlmly for 3-4 seconds until that cycle is complete. Now you have a nice tight bag to use.

Put your contents in the bag, put it halfway into the vacuum chamber and press down. Now the air will get sucked out. Wait for the red light press a little harder and the bag will seal tight.

I seal coffee, meat, veggies, etc. Have'nt had an issue. (knock wood)

I would have given it 5 stars, but since you have to go through the vacuum cycle just to seal the bag I'm giving it a 4. Worth the $50, just don't expect it to be like the $200 units as far as bells and whistles. Gets the job done, and saves you $$.

I have used this unit for the last three years to package my venison for the freezer. If I would of read some of the reviews on here I doubt I would of purchased it. It does have its quirks, but nothing that I have not seen in more expensive units. So I am going to give a couple of hints that have helped me use this successfully for processing all my deer.

First, when sealing the 'bottom' make sure you only place enough material under the heating element to leave about 1/4" below the seal and that the bag is completely flat. If you put any material in the vacuum chamber it will take forever because it tries to vacuum all the air out first before going into the sealing cycle.

Second, you need about 2" above the items you are sealing so any wetness doesn't get beyond the sealing element. And again, be sure the bag is completely flat under the element because creases make for a bad seal. And after the first seal, I do a second seal using the same manner as the bottom seal.

Third, use good quality bags. The best ones are the ones that have either textured strips at each side like the Black and Decker brand or the FoodSaver brand that have an entire side which is textured. The texture helps the air get to the top of the bag quicker so the unit can get to the sealing cycle.

And the last thing; when sealing wet items, use extra pressure on the lid to try and prevent the liquid getting to the sealing element. And it should go without saying, keep the top of the bag clean of any liquids or fats. The way I do it is to use another bag to place the meat into first then put the mouth of that bag into the bag I am going to seal and dump the contents straight into the bottom.

I have had this product for about 2 years. When you start to make a custom bag by sealing one end, it often does not seal the first time. When you add your items and begin to seal, you may find yourself standing over the machine for what feels like eternity trying to push hard enough for the seal to form. I have found that after using my machine, my wrists hurt from pushing down so hard to try to get a seal, and often, the seal is not complete and all of the air rushes back in. In addition, if there is any kind of liquid in the bag when the air is being sucked out, the liquid comes out with the air and pools inside the machine. This automatically shuts the sealer off and not only do you have to start all over again, but you also have a huge mess on your hands. When it works, it keeps meats fresh for months in the freezer. It isn't really worth the frustration though if you are looking to use it more than once in a blue moon.

Like most things, you can pay more, but it is the end result that matters. If the results are acceptable to you, why pay more? I gave it 5 stars in terms of value for the money, and also because the low price allows the investment to amortize itself over time. Sale priced dry foods can now last for years, and leftovers go in the freezer, instead of the trash. This is a practical, reliable device.

This is my second one of these. If you operate it properly they work well. My daughter stole the gasket out of my last one or it would be still i n service.
