Black & Decker introduces the new Workmate Hand Truck, a Workmate that converts into a convenient light-duty hand truck for homeowners. The Workmate Hand Truck assists with moving project materials such as bags of cement, lumber, and cinder blocks, and also transforms into a portable work surface that offers unique clamping capabilities. The Hand Truck's rugged steel-frame moves up to 200 pounds. Its 6- by 2-inch wheels offer durability and strength when moving large objects. The Hand Truck's 9-inch toe plate locks in place when the Workmate is converted to the hand truck. The large toe plate helps transport heavy loads. 4.0 out of 5 stars Comparable to other Workmates, August 28, 2005

Bought one at close-out for $50 at Home Depot. It's basically like all the other Workmate products with the addition of being a medium-duty hand-truck as well.

It's resonably easy to collapse into the hand-truck from a work table and reasonably sturdy. I think it's easier to assemble to being a workstand or truck than the 425 model I also own. A little lower than I'd prefer as a work surface, but compactness has its price.

One reviewer complained about the stamped steel construction. The price does not allow for anything else. Besides, the stand is surprisingly sturdy. I think it is supposed to hold ~400 lb. Not bad for stamped steel.

I deduct one star because the conversion between forms is a little awkward and as a truck it does not stand up with much stability (tilts forward).

2.0 out of 5 stars useable but very limited and surprisingly fragile, June 15, 2005

You'll be able to do some LIGHT handyman
jobs with this apparatus. It will NOT
replace the use of multiple sawhorses
or even a small table saw.

The knobs are really cheap plastic. They
likely will crack.

As a handtruck I haven't used it but
look forward to trying that feature.

As a vice or table mechanism it's
stable enough to do light jobs.

Now I use it as a fold-away arts and
crafts table in my study. I place a
birch veneer plywood on top and use
it as a kind of in-the-fie;d drafting
table.

Sorry I could not be more enthusiastic
but it needs to be more sturdy with
fewer plastic parts and less stamped
metal.

4.0 out of 5 stars WM525 - Great for "another hand" with small projects, March 8, 2007
This review is from: Black & Decker WM525 Workmate 525 450 Pound Capacity Portable Work Bench with Wheels (Tools & Home Improvement)
My wife bought this for me to use as a small work bench to build a birdhouse out on my patio. Assembly was easy. The instructions were complete with a corrected amendment page. Just looking at the photo on the box was enough to assemble it, once you had all the parts laid out in front of you.

I found that the clamping system worked nicely to hold my project as it was being cut, glued and assembled. Clamping variations were very useful for each. I can't lift much, so the hand truck option seemed like a nice bonus tool.

The hand truck was a little chunky at first, so I removed the two removable table top boards and it handled much easier. The locking mechanisms to switch from a workbench to a hand truck are very functional. The materials used to build this workbench/hand truck are of good quality. Some plastic on the clamp adjustment handles makes you wonder if you could break them by over tightening the table vise. The locking mechanism handles are also plastic, but seem tough. The wheels are up to the job that the rest of this hand truck should be able to perform. If you want a heavy hand truck, go buy one suitable for that specific type of work.

It stores great. It can be left in the working position for extra counter top in your garage, or in the hand truck position to be stored standing up in a small vertical slot.

Didn't think I would like it this much, but I did.
